HOLY SHIT - do you NOT think you should have looked that up before hand? Of COURSE it's cumulative!!!!! How ELSE could it work?!?! When we say inflation was 2 percent in a year, we mean something that cost 100 dollars last year is 102 dollars this year. So if inflation is 2 percent the next year, then that item goes from 102 dollars to 104.04. So the inflation rate was 2 percent a year - over two years that' a rate of 4.04 percent! How in the hell did you THINK it worked? What did you think the inflation rate meant? I'm literally baffled anyone can be this dumb. it's literally called the ANNUAL inflation rate! OK, have it your way... it is way over 644% since 1970. Who ya gonna blame that on ? Carbon tax again? Oh wait...maybe COVID? You have a point? No? I thought so LOL Aww, need a tampon??? That if prices go up 3 percent this year and 2 percent next year, that the 2 percent is also applied to the 3 percent from the year before?!?! And that the total over two years is the combined total of both? Exactly. Gas was averaging $1.05 to $1.15 when Harper was PM and it's $1.95 here right now. Even if you use the higher number ($1.15) gas is up by 80% under Trudeau. A 2% increase now seems small but it's 4 cents/litre. An increase of 4 cents a ltr was huge just a few years ago. If you look at the price of gas and the cost of a mortgage now, compared to 2015, there's literally no comparison. It's just 8 years ago but the monthly cost of both is basically double for some people. Our mtg didn't go up but we're no longer paying any principal. We know people whose mtgs went from $4,000 to $8,000 and they can't hang on. We're at that part of the market where homes are going to price reduce over and over, chasing the market down, and it's going to get really ugly. I meant "and obfuscate".... sorry. But yeah, you are right. They seem to want to blame inflation on one individual as to truly understanding the mechanics of inflation and how world economics affects our inflation. They do not understand we are importers and if the price goes up, it is the exporters that cause that. They don;t understand the we import 90% of our annual produce and if it cost more to grow in California, Mexico, South America, it is not us that drive the prices up but the growers and exporters. They don't understand that we do not produce enough oil to make gas and we import most of the oil. Well and despite the rantings of the "Fox-hurt-my-feelings" club there, this is the takeaway that's important. It's as if Canadians had their wages significantly reduced. And those prices aren't going down. So - if inflation returns to 2 percent and wage increases stay stuck at about 2 percent, then that hit to canadians never goes away. The ability to build wealth ALWAYS requires a surplus after the cost of living. If someone needs 1000 bucks to get by and that's all they earn, there's no investing. If they earn 1100 - then over time that 100 bucks can build up a strong little equity portfolio. The inflation puts a lot more people into the ' just getting by' catagory. But the wealthy still have disposable income. So the middle class stops getting any richer while the rich continue. That seems awfully convenient. Rich people are getting richer at a slower pace as well. They're not going up nearly as quickly. So he's not making the rich richer - everyone's getting poorer but the rich can take that hit while the working class cannot. The rich will still be able to invest and make money even if it's less than they used to - but the working class is dead in the water and can't invest at all so they fall further behind. Neither one is better off - but the gap does widen.
