Seriously ?      You think Canada is so special it can avoid the impacts of COVID in other business sectors ?

Hell, Canada's economy was in trouble even before the pandemic because of oil prices and rail protests....open border or not.

No more than the US.

Early re-opening has probably hurt the economy.

Canada's economy is more dependent on an open border.

The U.S. did not have two months of negative GDP growth last year.

Fewer people will be crossing the border in many ways, not just physical travel.

Truck traffic volume is down 25%.....consumer side demand is way down overall.

With the U.S. and Canadian government committing to keeping the border open for trade, there appears to be a clear indication of demand-side reduction in cross-border transit. However, for the demand that there is, trade continues to occur, as we still have 75 percent of normal truck traffic across all border crossings.

As is all the economy. You'd think it would be worse considering there was 6 weeks or so of almost nil economic activity except for food.

It is worse...for Canada...now, and into the future.

The closed border is just one aspect of this.

Not sure why you'd want to visit the US right now.

You can catch a flight to the US if you want. No ones stopping you, but when you return you'll be asked to Quarantine for 2 weeks.

Truckers are essential because they keep trade going. You know, that economy people like to talk about.

The land border will be closed to non-essential travel until the US can get the virus under control. Seems a deal is being worked out to get Hockey and Baseball players to be able to cross the border though.

Americans won't be allowed to go to Europe, Canadians will though. :P

Unlike you, I am not afraid of the big bad virus. Only gullible brainwashed fools are. The rise in numbers is just another lie and is all part of this deep state globalist false flag fiasco.

I prefer driving in the US instead. I like taking my time, and stopping along the way, and visit tourist spots or stop off and take a break at some American casino. The quarantine is one of the reason why I will not fly to the states. Recently, Hawaii said that Hawaii is now open up for tourists. The only problem is that once you get there you are supposed to quarantine yourself for 14 days. WTH? More politician logic, eh?

As I have said already, the tens of thousands of truckers that cross the borders every week can spread the virus just as easily as you can. You must think that this virus is able to pick and choose as to who it is going to attack. Now family's are able to get together and bring the virus back and forth with ease now. But then, maybe the virus has said that it will not bother those family members either. But knowing you, you will never see the hypocrisy in all of this. So freakin' bloody sad. Let the bull chit continue on, eh? You love it, right? ;)

Why shut down the land border crossings when, as you said, we can fly to the states anytime. I can bring the bug back from Europe on my way back to Canada. More politician logic? And we see more sillyness going on in regards to allowing hockey and baseball players to cross each other's borders. Of course those players will not be transporting the virus into each other's country, right? What a laugh.

Again, where is the politician logic in all of this when Canadians are allowed to fly to Europe but not be able to drive to America? Canadians can bring back the virus from Europe also. And besides, I do not like the idea of having to wear a mask for 8 bloody hours on a plane. That is totally unhealthy for anyone to be doing is to be wearing a mask especially for 8 hours. It is said that when one wears a mask they only get to breath out about half of their carbon dioxide, and then breath the other half back into their lungs. Not good for breathing especially if someone has a breathing problem. They will be only breathing in about half of the oxygen that they need. Wearing a mask could cause breathing problems in some people. Humans were not meant to live on carbon dioxide. They were meant to live on oxygen. This whole bloody virus thinghy is all just a joke of an hoax, and people like you believe it.

It's tough to discuss the issue if you refuse to acknowledge the COVID figures. You have no evidence to contend that numbers are a lie.

Even GOP Governors and Mike Pence concede the outbreak has increased. Pence is even wearing a mask.

Truckers contribute to trade. If I was driving to the US for anything, I wouldn't leave my truck unless I had to go to the bathroom and I'd sanitize immmediately.

Europe's cases are a fraction of the US now. And unless you're a member of the Blue Jays, it looks like the 2 week quarantine stays.

Canadians cross the border by a 2:1 ratio compared to Americans, and the U.S. has 10X the population.

Keep the border closed for another year !

Not all trade is essential....stop those trucks too.

Hockey and baseball are the most non-essential of all.

If the border stays closed, for say a year, many of those American businesses on the border with Canada will no doubt go bankrupt. Here in northern Washington state Canadians by the tens of thousands cross into places like Blaine and Bellingham every year which most of those American businesses on the border rely on Canadians for their lively hoods. Canadians make up about approx. 50% or maybe even more to survive. Yes my boy, there are some Americans who need Canadian business to survive. It's not all just about you, mac. ;)

I agree that not all trade is essential but plenty of it is. But in reality, all business and trade is pretty much essential especially for those American businesses that exist on Canadians to survive. Keeping the border closed to land traffic is just more politician bull chit. Of course, everything about this China virus is all just total bull chit. The hypocrisy of it all is quite overwhelming indeed. Many thousands of Americans also do enjoy getting out of America and driving to Canada for a days visit or a vacation. Many Americans are hurting just as much as Canadians are are hurting because of this land border shut down. Open the bloody border up and quit with this bloody border nonsense. Are we supposed to be friends and neighbors or not? It has become quite obvious to me that someone wants to try and keep us apart. It has nothing to do with a virus. Just more political bull chit going on here. Believe it or not.

I must say that I do enjoy American NFL football. And the reason for that is that I like the playing of four downs and not the playing of three downs. And there is no border crossings to have to deal with. :D

I believe that comrade Trudeau had more to do with our downward slide to the Canadian economy. The virus did not help. But thanks to this virus, this has given comrade Trudeau more power to screw we the sheeple even more. While the economy is going for a shit, this buffoon keeps borrowing more money from the globalist banksters, and then gives just about all of it away to many third world countries to help them with their own virus problems, and towards other leftist liberal and socialist programs and agendas. It's not the virus that is going to bankrupt this country if it is allowed to continue on. It is this comrade buffoon of a leader that will be bankrupting this once great nation.

The Covid figures are made up false flag figures. There is plenty of evidence of those false figures on the internet. Many doctors and nurses and other health officials have said that all of these high these Covid figures are not for real and do not add up. Plenty of those figures are made up figures. Apparently, just more globalist, politician, media and those other so called health officials lying in order to make more money from keeping this hoax of a joke virus alive and well. Sadly, people like you will never get it. Losers galore!! :D

Everybody is or has to play the game, and no doubt many are making plenty of dollars from it. Most of our American and Canadian politicians know that this is all just a virus joke. The wearing of a mask is just for show, and some Governors are forcing some of their citizen's to wear a mask when they go out even tough it has been shown that wearing of a mask is not all that healthy at all. The wearing of a mask only means that one is breathing back into their lungs half of their exhaled own carbon dioxide. Now how stupid is that, eh?

You are one paranoid globalist trained Canadian seal alright. I do hope that you are staying at home, practicing safe distance when you go out, and I do hope that you are wearing a mask for my safety sake. I do not want to be breathing in your China virus out there. Ha-ha.

This is why most Canadians today now find themselves feeling like prisoners in their own country. Not much point in going to another country if one has to stay in their hotel and quarantine themselves for two weeks like people are supposed to do if they go to Hawaii for a vacation. The two week quarantine is totally asinine, and totally not necessary.  But this is what our dyktator politicians want for us, and this is what we the sheeple will get. So pathetic indeed. :(

Too bad....they are going bankrupt anyway.   A business should be able to survive without relying on Canadians hoarding cheaper milk or picking up their packages at a U.S. address to beat customs and taxes.   America is a "cesspool", remember ?

That's why Canadians who want to play the two week quarantine game should stay on your side of the border.   Even the provinces have restricted travel inside the country, but Americans can travel to Alaska ?    Doesn't make any sense.

Canadian media is reporting more hotspots and outbreaks in several cities to help keep the panic and government control going.

Boo !

Pulling back was always a contingency if a spike in cases resulted from re-opening.

The border should remain closed at a much lower case/infection  threshold because cross border travel is largely non-essential and always has been.

I completely agree.

I'm speaking to the sentiment that this virus is a deep state plot to control everyone.

The unwillingness for people to wear masks in indoor public places is astonishing. People are playing defence against safety.

Mandating masks indoors and outdoors only feeds into the deep state theory.

Government "experts" badly bungled the mask protocol early on, and now it is an act of denial and defiance.

How does a mask provide any control?

It's public health. You can mandate seatbelts, certain vaccines, education for children etc.

If No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service is legal, then so is No Mask, No Service.

You answered your own question...mandating masks limits access and creates social stigma.

"Recommending" masks vs. "requiring" masks sends mixed messages and creates opportunity for backlash given the non-compliant behaviours of various groups (e.g. protestors).

Public health lacks a strong real-time enforcement arm, regardless of this specific pandemic.

Sure, enforcement is an issue. Governments will concede that.

But you can certainly deny service to someone who isn't wearing a mask.

Avoid derailing this thread discussion.

Another reason that the border should remain closed.   Expectations and compliance are different in each country.

Border crossing shock is real and part of the denial/defiance dynamic.

Not really...there are several groups with and without sob stories that want the border opened on both sides.

The list of exceptions is growing, leading to more criticism of effectiveness for the policy.

Why is airline travel still permitted ?

You have to allow for repatriation.

And Canadians are property owners in the US, and vice versa.

Make no mistake, the volume is 95% of what it was.

Looks like the Federal government is going to let Baseball teams in.
