cannuck Posted May 3, 2020 Report Posted May 3, 2020 Those of us who are old enough to remember can appreciate how much the Vietnam war changed the politics of the USA forever. Now that WV deaths have surpassed those of Vietnam, it should be some kind of benchmark to denote the changes that are sure to come. I was a conscientious objector who passed on a great scholarship because I did not want to study in the US. While both of these events are horrible inasmuch as they resulted in a lot of people dying, I think the country will come out of it a better place as it did post Vietnam. While we all enjoy taking pot shots at our friends and neighbours just across the 49th, their resilience and capacity for introspect is something I admire. I expect this disaster will have the whole nation look more carefully at how international relations and trade directly impacts the economy and security of the nation. Quote

I think the US is too divided to reach any consensus on anything. The sheer outrage factor of Trump's presidency has driven even previously moderately normal Democratic policies into the realm of batshit crazy leftist nonsense. I mean, many senior Democrats once openly called for better border security against illegal immigrants. Now they won't even use the term 'illegal immigrant' and call for an end to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, no more arrests for illegal border crossers, amnesty, the extension of social services to illegals, and massively increased immigration. I don't see that as being at all helpful in preventing another similar episode. 1 Quote "A liberal is someone who claims to be open to all points of view — and then is surprised and offended to find there are other points of view.” William F Buckley
Shady Posted May 3, 2020 Report Posted May 3, 2020 The regular flu kills more people than Vietnam every year in the United States too. This topic is irrelevant. Quote

How many die of the flu each year in the US is debatable. Webmd gives it as between 8500, 20,000 Business insider says that in a bad flu season 60,000 can die The CDC says between 12,000 and 61,000 a year since 2010. Note that the corona19 has already surpassed 68,000 and is likely to at least double. And given so many states are opening up again even though none have met white house guidelines of falling infection rates the number of dead could be many times higher than the present number by year's end. -TSS- Posted May 4, 2020 Report Posted May 4, 2020 I think one benchmark, which has been crossed a long time ago, was that the virus has killed more people in NYC than were killed in 9/11. Quote

Yes and no....NYC tracks all causes of death for demographic groups by year. https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Health/New-York-City-Leading-Causes-of-Death/jb7j-dtam Once the pathology for COVID-19 has been established , it will likely join the list under respiratory disease with less under and over counting by hospitals and coroners. Such comparisons are hooks for headlines more than objective mortality reporting. For instance, COVID-19 has killed more Canadians than combat deaths in the Korean War and Afghanistan combined. Boges Posted May 5, 2020 Report Posted May 5, 2020 It seems pretty likely they'll blow past 100,000 by the Summer. Trump will have to own that. He's on record saying there's only 15 people and soon it'll be zero. All the while he was being warned that the virus was a grave threat. Quote
