America has more friendly ways too. America's soft power dwarves Chinese soft power, and they also have more hard power to go with it, it's not either or, you can do both and America does both far better than China.

Fair enough.

But brow beating Liberal democracies into spending more than, perhaps their mandate would like, only plays into the likes of Russia and China.

Agreed, as Trump's main target is Germany, which benefits the most (including trade with Russia) while spending far less on defense.   Current German defense spending levels are now about 20% of West Germany before the great "peace dividend" slashed EU spending.   Trump's favourite weapon is trade tariffs, just as he did with Canada and Mexico for NAFTA...he can't directly force the NATO deadbeats to spend more, but he can make it painful.

The post WW2 "grand bargain" is coming to an end, but it is much more about Europe and the EU than tiny Canada, which must rely on collective defense no matter what the spending levels.   Canada could diminish Trump's NATO deadbeat rhetoric by procuring the F-35 JSF, and milk that for all it's worth.

Canada has made itself irrelevant, they think they are a "valued trading partner" when in fact they are a protectionist competitor.

They think they are "valued military ally" when they are laughing stock free rider.

The consequences will be economic as America simply freezes them out.

It's too late to save the Canadian Forces though, it's collapsed beyond the point of no return, the nabobs in Ottawa and their state run media just decline to admit it.

How does getting American allies to beef up their military play into Russia or China's hands?

It plays into their hands that he's sowing discord amongst NATO.

When 911 happened the US invoked Article 5 and to a man NATO has their backs.

Now Trump is waffling on it. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2017/05/trump-declines-to-affirm-natos-article-5/528129/

He is not sowing discord, he is asking them to live up to deal they agreed to. They are the one's sowing discord, not America.

And as I mentioned, the 2% benchmark is as useless as emissions pledges.

Only the US take it seriously because of their Military Industrial Complex.

America doesn't take it seriously, they just want to nudge them closer to that direction is all, by pretending to take it seriously, outrageous opening offer. Why shouldn't they?

Putin will be thrilled.

Apparently he'll be thrilled if other countries don't carry their weight either. Apparently Putin wins no matter what according to you. Whatever Trump does, Putin somehow wins, that way you can pretend he's secretly Putin's puppet and everything he does is to help Putin.

Boges sees everything through the lens of Trump Derangement Syndrome, it's like he's retarded, he can't even function without his TDS, lulz.
