I tend to agree.

But Bulgarians still speak Bulgarian, and are Christian.

Was there an "industry" to resurrect the Bulgarian language? Or did Bulgarians - like people in Quebec - do this on their own?

===============

Far more broadly, we in the rich West think of the future. Ignorant people in the East - or simply ignorant people, such as Canada's native "industry" - want to correct the past.

For this, I have always liked the phrase of Deng Xsiao Ping: "Who cares whether the cat is white or black as long as it catches mice."

They want to keep the money flowing. How much do the lawyers and consultants  (which many now are native) end up taking out of the pot , before anyone gets a cent. This is a project like homelessness and poverty that certain elements of the left do not want fixed. To many good paying jobs to be had  and a lot of money to siphon off.

Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.

Sort of like the elements of the right that want to preserve the military industrial complex for the arms sales profits or the judicial industrial complex of lawyers, cops and prisons getting rich off the war on drugs.

This is a problem with governance not ideology.

Well its patently clear Trudeau is not legalizing pot so he can say it was the left that finally got the state off people's backs.  Nope, getting the state off people's backs is something that only right-wing parties can be trusted to do or so I've been told.  Can you think of any reason why I shouldn't believe that?

There's really only one problem that we need to fix in this godforsaken country.  Can you guess what it is?

But isn't your health care-system still way better than across the border in the US? At least nobody in your country will have to choose between death or getting bankrupt because you really can't afford some operation.

Here in Southern Alberta health care has been virtually perfect for myself, family and others we know. We have no complaints whatsoever. It's not perfect but far better then alternatives I've seen so far.

I believe health care should be a right, not a privilege and everybody should have equal access regardless of financial ability.

That is not the situation in southern Alberta, nor throughout southern Canada. If you have more money you simply cross the border, an hour or less away, and purchase it.

Waiting in an emergency room for 6-10 hours is NOT virtually perfect. Nor is waiting 6-8 months for a specialist consult. It is, in fact, very far from perfect, and well behind our European partners who, for the most part, don't spend much more than we do.

We don't purchase healthcare... I've probably financed more health care through taxes than I've required over my lifetime so far but I'm fine with that, I'm blessed with being reasonably healthy to this point and I don't mind subsidizing those that have been less fortunate health wise.

That's not our experience, we've sat in waiting rooms up to four hours at times but anything approaching life threatening has always been taken care of immediately. I have never had issues waiting for specialists, yes waiting 6-8 months to get a concern addressed is an issue but on the other hand do we want to finance specialists waiting on the sidelines to immediately address every little irritant we get? It's all checks and balances people and industries get busy, we all go through times we can't keep up and I bet European healthcare systems have their issues too.

That would be great if people paid attention to checks and balances, but they don't.  We should be demanding that our system approaches the efficiency and service levels of European systems, not American ones.

With all due respect: we have never HAD a "right wing" government in Canada.   Just a lot of Red Torries pretending they have a clue what conservatism means.

AFAIC every governing system on the planet has a right-wing -  at least according to the original meaning to the term right-wing that was coined in post revolutionary France.  Governments, politicians, and leaders of whatever stripe keep the innies close and the outies out.

Conservatism doesn't mean much, it's just a natural force that exists in everyone and every institution - its no more than that little voice that says 'careful' when approaching or trying something new.  Unfortunately for all concerned politics has turned that little voice into a terrified screech more often than not screaming SLOW DOWN! STOP! and even TURN BACK! - and a tool of control that governments and politicians of all stripe use to avoid doing much if anything at all.

Of course there are times when this can be used in reverse, that is where the fear of not moving quickly towards something like globalization for example, will result in ruination and destruction.

No, I think in Canadian parliament and provincial legislatures as well, they all sit on the left of the speaker.

Kidding aside, good post.

There are three extremely important jobs the federal government has been ignoring for the last ten years other than to make little tinkering and public relations efforts.

Health care.
Legal system
Natives.

They're being ignored because fixing them is extremely complex and time consuming, and no immediate obvious answer offers itself up. These are not things which can be solved with a few quick sound bites and a selfie. They're a complete mess, and getting worse every month.

Our health care system is deteriorating month by month, year by year. We're like frogs stuck in a pot of water that heats up slowly enough we don't quite notice it, but if you look back on how health care used to work - when finding doctors was easy, when long waits for operations or consultations were unusual, when you could walk into an ER room in any major city and be seen within minutes, you come to realize how far we've fallen.

Our legal system is a labourious,  time-consuming and expensive mess. All of it. Criminal, civil and family law courts are all swamped and cases take years to wind their slow, torturous way through the system, with very uncertain results. The provinces are bleating about how hard it is to even meet the supreme court's demand for a criminal trial in under two years! Yet in the UK the average takes less than 2 months.

There are more and more natives claiming more and more money and doing nothing for it. The overall population rose 8% between the last two censuses but the aboriginal population rose 45%. More and more money is being siphoned off by non-working natives who, rather than being grateful, are bitter at their useless, purposeless lives.

And what is the plan? What's to be done? So far all we have is crickets from all three parties.

More people are identfying as natives to get benefits because more is being given out.  Healthcare is a provincial responsibility and legal system is slow due to lack of qualified judges.  Canada has good judges in general and that is because we are picking reallyexperienced lawyers from top firms.  The problem is if you start appointing small time lawyers to judgeships, the judges become corrupt and take money under the table.

I would say our health care is better value than America's; whether it's actually better is an unanswerable question that depends on the criteria that matter to you. One red herring is medical tourism. Many Canadians do go to the US for procedures but if that's the only yardstick used then Britain, Bulgaria, India, China and Iran must have great medical systems because they also attract a lot of foreign customers.
