Yeah it's not like they're automatically thrusted into the spotlight or anything.

Yet the last 3 PM spouses managed to avoid the spotlight.

Sophie wants to be in the spotlight.

Oh yeah? Did your ballot have a spot for PM?

It didn't have a spot for Barrack Obama either.

Does that mean Obama wasn't elected?

What exactly are you trying to argue here?

He fills dead air with ahhh. I don't see the big deal. It's not like any of our leaders in recent history were winning speaking awards.

He sounds like a high-schooler who's groping for the answer! What world leader speaks like that?

I don't see him that way at all. That completely the result of pre conceptions on your part. I thought he was an idiot in the lead up to the election. I'm thoroughly convinced that he's not st this point.

No one really cared about them. The media reports Sophie because people want to know what she's doing. People want her to speak at their events.

Small they need the spot lite. Nobody voted for sophie. And nobody has no problem if she wants more help. But we are not paying for it. The last time we had a expensive 1st wife was Mulroney's wife ,another elitist Montrealer. Like I said before Canada is not back, Quebec and the elites are back.

No, it's not a pre-conception. That's how unprepared high-schoolers sound like......or people who lack

public-speaking skills.

Public-speaking is a big part of being in politics. What more when you're the head of a nation.

What I'm saying is.....he doesn't sound dignified as a world leader should. I'm not saying he's an idiot.

I don't know if he does it deliberately.....like if it's the "in" thing among those in his drama circle(?).

I've heard him speak straight without that ahhhh-ing....so I know he can do it.

We pay for a lot of things that any of us personally don't agree with.

With a speech prepared he can do it. It's not like Harper, Martin, or Chrétien were master orators. Canadians have never expected that.

Gosh Betsy... That's a sobering self assessment but correct, unfortunately.

I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger

He should take time to take lessons.

I agree with the OP. In re-reading the media articles on this matter, it seemed to me Sophie's biggest problem is that she's swamped with requests. As she said "I can't be everywhere". The PMO is said to be helping her cope with the volume of correspondence she's receiving. Hence it's imperative she say no since she simply can't accept all speaking engagements.

As suggested by others, the Liberal Party should take an active part in managing Sophie's (to hear tell) "extraordinary public appeal". The Liberal Party and her PM husband are reaping most of the rewards of said popularity. I say "most" because whichever groups she graces with her presence would probably get something out of it. And let's not forget this is a boon to the fortunes of her Quebec based clothes designer since her fashions are on display every time Sophie is on a stage.

Oh the humanity! The problems faced by the rich and famous.

As the "First Lady," she should know what's appropriate or not with her position.

Class act, is what's expected of course.

What's has she done that's inappropriate?

Should Harper have taken lessons? Or did it not matter, because no one cared what he had to say ?

Often, those who speak off the cuff will have filler utterances. Many people learn to use adjectives, my favourite is 'actually'. Listen to someone speaking, especially someone from California, and every other word is 'actually'. Once you listen for it, you start to laugh at how often it occurs.

Stephen Harper usually delivered prepared speeches, but listen to him when responding to other, his speech was full of um's and ah's.
