Bryan Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 Everybody knows about the existence of the "Consortium." This isn't some ground breaking exposé to uncover its existence. People in this thread have claimed that there is no consortium. One of Harpers people on Power and Politics today referred to it as a CABAL. Facepalms and giggles ensued. Nice try. Quote
cybercoma Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 The idea that there is a concerted media bias against the Conservatives is nonsensical blathering that has littered this forum for ages. It just isn't true and if it is, nobody has provided even remotely sufficient evidence for it. The 137-page BOMBSHELL!!! that Ezra Levant uncovered was discussed to death in the thread about the Conservatives changing copyright laws to suit their propaganda department. That thread can be read here: http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums/topic/23978-conservatives-change-copyright-laws-to-favour-election-chances/ Harper refusing to show up to the debates on the major news networks in this country is going to bite him in the backside, but I highly doubt it's going to happen. He's throwing a bone out there for the people obtuse enough to think that there is some secret agenda by "the" media to attack the Conservatives (despite many of them endorsing the Conservatives in the elections, but whatever, right?). Harper will be there or else he's going to look like a complete tool to the undecideds. Everyone else will be on the stage presenting their platforms and Harper will be absent. Do you think that kind of bald-faced arrogance will resonate with undecided voters? I suspect it will go over a hell of a lot like Jean Chrétien's arrogance did. I'll say it again. The only people who respond to this are people already firmly committed to voting for Stephen Harper's Conservatives. When the debates get closer, he'll go back on this because he sure as hell does not want to suffer the consequences of undecided voters thinking he's too arrogant to present his platform to them. I don't think people are denying 'the consortium''s existence. But... what of it ? CTV biased against the conservatives ? That's kind of a new one. Michael Hardner Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 You also seem to have missed the point, where is it written that the CBC and the media consortium has to organize and televise the debates? That same consortium tried to deny the conservatives fair use of their own news clips (something they had a right to) and maybe they are getting paid back for it now. Blame the bias of the CBC led consortium. I really don't understand. So, CBC, CTV, Global and City aren't going to 'organize and televise' the debates ? Isn't that what I said ? That the Conservatives can stay out of the TV debates ? I don't understand how this can be 'payback' either. Politicians still need TV, and I doubt Harper's Social Media campaign is going to resonate with the Senior Citizens who love him so. scribblet Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 137 page document where the other outlets refer to THEMSELVES as the Consortium, and go into detail confirming almost everything the Sun had been saying all along. Remiel Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 People on the wrong side will always claim bias. Look at that obscene debate in the US in States where people are trying to get creationism taught alongside evolution in schools on the premise that there is a real "debate" to be had on that issue. Similarly, if the entire mainstream media is saying there is something wrong with your favourite politician you should be open to the idea that there is in fact something wrong with them. Quote
PIK Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 The last debate was all about attacking harper, there was no debate. Sure he is the PM ,but these others are running for the same job. Quote Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.
Michael Hardner Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 The last debate was all about attacking harper, there was no debate. <sarcasm> Awww. Poor baby ! Yes, absolutely he should be shielded from people saying mean things ! </sarcasm> Whether or not you agree with the Liberals, the NDP, the Conservatives you must agree that citizens need to be given the tools to execute their democratic duties. This includes having the government defend their record, and not just in question period. The problem with our information processes today is that they're poorly designed, even as they are changing/deteriorating due to the large forces of change we're experiencing: changing media landscape, poor funding, and so on. A good number of older and engaged voters would still like to see a debate, so the government should probably work to make that happen. Exactly. IMO we would all like to see some debates, I'd say 4 or 5 max. as there is only so much you can stand - I'm looking forward to see how Trudeau does - has anyone heard that they have requested a teleprompter for him? Je suis Omar Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 (edited) http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/canadian-politics/conservatives-say-harper-wont-participate-in-traditional-election-debates-run-by-broadcasters Aside from the usual left wing bias of the mainstream media, ... That effort was lead by the ever so unbiased CBC, and if that is the case I say, good on the CPC for sticking it to them. This meme has been imported, wholesale, from the US of A. The notion that the mainstream media is left wing is fatuous in the extreme. Media that is actually more left has been against these massive war crimes and terrorist actions against the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, not to mention all the other always ongoing terrorist actions by the USA. All the mainstream media, CBC included, have been cheerleaders for the war criminals/terrorists that illegally invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. However, if the debates aren't available to most Canadians that will be a problem. Yeah, 'cause I larned from my pappy that's how a deemokkrasee works. Edited May 13, 2015 by Je suis Omar Quote

Why should the Consortium exclude other media, why not allow other outlets in on the action and why not allow different approaches to the debates. WWWTT Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 I think it would be a mistake for Harper to avoid the debates. I have little use for them myself but his absence would create a stage for the opposition groups and comedians. I can see the stage with May, Mulcair, Trudeau and an empty lectern. It would give them a free hand go after Harper policies and promises without a rebuttal. I don't have much use for the debates either. However, I believe it's in more than my own opinion that the debate can be the single most important night leading up to the final poll! Rachel Notley's performance will be ranked right up there with Kennedy and Mulroney in my opinion! If Harper is really considering avoiding the debates English/French, then his party must be terrified of an imminent crash!!! WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00!
