Utter Incompetence in Dealing with Ebola

Recommended Posts

If you want to continue railing against the U.S, go for it. However, if you want to help, write to some philanthropists and encourage them to donate lots of cold hard cash so this virus can be contained at the source.

There is no real shortage of available capital to deal with Ebola. Governments are there with the money, just not the common sense protocols. But you can only improve an issue so much by throwing money at it. You mentioned earlier that more than $1B might be needed... more than that has already been spent, and far far more than that has already been done in economic damage. And the outbreak is only just beginning.

I suspect that the amount that will have to be spent dealing with this will be closer to a trillion than a billion.

No shortage? Do your research first. They are desperately in need of beds, health workers, outfits, disinfectant etc. This is why they can't get a handle o the source. Check your facts.

From the law's perspective, in order to require someone to be isolated, they would have to have a dangerous contagious disease that's easily transmissible person-to-person and, and this is important, be unable or unwilling to isolate themselves.

Easily transmissible? Check.

Unable to isolate self? Given that quarantine procedures at a hospital failed, an individual on their own is clearly unable. Check.

OK...now get ready for court because you will need a hearing to impose the involuntary quarantine. Lawyers will love this !

Dozens of new facilities are being constructed in the source countries as we speak. But those efforts take time, even when the resources are available. Meanwhile... containment. The thing that apparently no one likes to talk about.

There are how many court cases in the US every day? Thousands? Millions? I don't mind some lawyers making a few bucks along the way if proper containment strategies can be implemented.

Of course... the CDC and the administration isn't even trying, so there won't be any such court cases for a while.

Ebola donations lag far behind need. You seem to have no comprehension of what is happening at the source.

That's because you have very unrealistic expectations. Ain't going to happen. Why is this so difficult to accept ?

Not possible? Of course it is. Complete border closure, enforced by military, of the borders of affected areas.

The US can't even completely close its own borders, not even in the damn desert. You want African countries to close off their borders from people walking through the jungle?

Patrick Sawyer. American who knowingly flew from Liberia to Nigeria with Ebola, introducing the disease into that country and responsible for over a dozen deaths. Fortunately, unlike America, Nigeria apparently knows how to quarantine people.

I would say it was a serious error in judgement then, to let him go.

This is the kind of moronic logic the CDC uses. You don't freaking screen for Ebola by checking temperature, a symptom that only manifests itself up to 3 weeks after infection. You screen for Ebola by checking for Ebola... blood sample and careful analysis thereof,

You want everyone to have a blood test - at the airport - and wait for results?

The nurse that flew with a fever has probably let the genie out of the bottle. Every door she touched at the airport, the documents she traded with various staff, the airplane seat and seatbelt, any washroom facilities, any taxis. What a stupid, stupid woman. But any country that has thus far refused to restrict air travel could be in for the same. It's been reported that the virus can be in a person for up to a week with no symptoms whatsoever.

By trying to downplay the fears with strategies like this, they are putting the world at risk.

You don't know much about how ebola is spread... it isn't like the flu or a cold virus.

Ever notice how far from "dry" a public washroom doorknob usually tends to be? I can't even remember the last time I've seen a washroom doorknob that wasn't dripping. These are the kinds of assumptions that have led people to make serious mistakes with Ebola. Can only be spread by bodily fluids... no worries. Oh, wait, a sneeze or cough can send droplets of bodily fluids flying around the whole room.

A few years ago there was an inordinate number of students getting sick at an inner city Secondary School in Toronto. There were a few concerns since the school drew a large number of immigrant children. The PHE dept tried an experiment, they included “How to wash your hands in a public washroom” program into every class in the school. The program consisted of a volunteer visiting every home room and demonstrating the process. It consisted of :

Turn Faucet On

Wet Hands

Soap Hands

Wash Hands

Tear Off Sheet of Paper Towel

Dry Hands With Paper Towel

Using Paper Towel, Turn Off Faucet

Using Paper Towel Open Door to Washroom and Leave.

Throw Paper Towel Into Nearest Receptacle

There was a marked decrease in the number of colds reported in the school

Yes, making sure not to re-contaminate your hands on the faucet after washing them is key. Fortunately, many washrooms now also have sensors to dispense water, soap, and paper towels so you don't have to touch anything at all.

However, that is far from all of them, and many people don't wash hands in the above described way. A typical public washroom is still one with water from people's hands all over faucets, soap dispensers, and doorknobs. This is particularly true of aircraft washrooms.

Oh, so you are suggesting shutting down Carnival cruises?

Where did I say that?

When you're on a cruise ship you're isolated with thousands of people. Just like the idiot who got on a plane with a fever, people should be way more prudent about their travels if they had potentially been exposed.

They skipped the Cozumel port and are coming back. You'd have to think all the people on that ship would have to be watched if not quarantined.

Then why even propose such a fantasy ? CDC defended their "steps" today and will not change it for now. Travel is not restricted. Quarantines are voluntary, as is testing. That panicked dog don't hunt (yet)..need a much higher body count.

Exactly..........and a voice of reason from Shep:

There are now many nations contributing to finding a vaccine and/or cure. Canada has just contributed another $30 million to make it $65 million so far. There now is a potential vaccine available.

A few weeks ago, a poster here posted in another thread” “Be patient. When/If Ebola ever starts to become a danger to the West we will find a cure. When "civilized" white guys and gals are in danger we seem to find the money to throw into finding a cure.”

Looks like he guessed right.
