Palin!!! Way to ruin a thread. As she in turn challenges U.S. Senator McCain, it's quite hilarious to hear her refer to him as "her good friend". Oh my!

Don't forget, she also challenged Hillary.....

just another Hollywood liberal... donates $100K to ALS Association... and challenges Stephen Harper. C'mon Harper - step up!

So he donates $100K and challenged Harper while shooting a tarsands doc in Alberta. Excellent job Leo! JT has been in a couple challenge vids including his own, displaying charm and an easy going personality. He interacts with people in an effortless manner, I'm interested to see how Harper, a man that shakes hands with his kids instead of hugging them, comes off.

With the perception that people seem to have of Harper, I would expect that in a video he would be standing there next to a street person as they bring in a bucket of boiling water. Harper sticks his hand into the bucket and turns it to ice cubes. He then pours the ice cubes over the head of the homeless guy and cleans out the homeless guys pockets taking some money that he finds and give it to the ALS foundation.

Then he cuts off any more funding to the movement. :D

I expect Harper would add the homeless guy's hat full of coins and bag of cans to either oil industry subsidies or the additional $13M injection he gave the CRA to harass charities that have criticized his government. They recently told Oxfam Canada that 'preventing poverty is not a valid goal' for a charity if it wants to keep its tax exempt status in Canada.

Anyway, I'm sure several of his speech writers and image consultants are scripting a performance that will appear natural and personable. Maybe he can combine a sweater vest, hockey game, Tim Horton's, a shot at JT and an ice bucket in one video. It's a brilliant fundraising tool. It's easy to say no when someone is standing outside a liqour store or asking you to add some money at the till after you've bought groceries, or even when someone comes to your door.

But when someone you know calls you out on Social Media it kind of forces your hand. I got it, didn't really want to have that on the interwebs forever and have to tell 3 other people to do it.

So I just cut the cheque for $100.

Leo is a little late to the party. Harper already made his ALS donation last week.

meanwhile, a couple of guys who didn't need to worry about water damaging robot circuits... although one of these two seems a bit... 'wooden'!

He missed an opportunity to appear personable and human. Too bad.

I believe that the process is successful partly because of the "macho" effect of those choosing to have ice water poured on their head. That may open another avenue. I am considering starting the "Get Buzzed Challenge" for the ... lets say ... Heart Foundation. A person has the choice of getting tasered on TV or writing a cheque to the foundation and then challenge another.

The challenge may be "Get Buzzed For Charity". It may even get support from the pro-legalized pot people who may choose to reinterpret the campaign. :D

So by your standards I guess that makes Obama and all the US diplomats or high ranking officials to not appear personable or human either?

Obama is already very personable and will not be seeking reelection. While trailing a very charismatic leader in the polls this would have been a good opportunity for Harper to show a fun, human side. Even if scripted and rehearsed.

Yeah, I think appearances like that certainly help his image.

The ALSA has certainly come up with a great fundraising campaign, but here is an infographic that questions how we spend donations.

I don't think this is a matter of being personable or not, the fact is that when you are the head of the state you are put in a situation where you don't get to do what you want as there is a perception issue. As the article below states, officials can't use pucblic office for private gain "no matter how worthy the cause".

The State Department has banned participation by U.S. ambassadors and other high-profile foreign service officers. Department lawyers say participation would violate federal ethics rules barring officials from using public office for private gain "no matter how worthy the cause," according to an unclassified cable sent earlier this week that was obtained Thursday by The Associated Press.

I had seen this too. My first thought (and its not well developed) is that the top 3 things that cause death (Heart Disease, COPD and Diabetes) are somewhat caused by things that we already know. For example (heart attacks from obesity, COPD - smoking, diabetes - poor diet (for the one type))

No one knows what causes ALS which perhaps warrant more money to figure out what actually does. The top two items for fundraising are cancer related which again is something that we don't have a strong handle on.....therefore more money needed. The ALS fundraiser will most likely move into the top 3 after this go.

It should, this campaign has been an amazing success. I didn't post that graphic to insinuate that research funding should be proportional to the death toll; I just found it interesting. Just because ALS affects relatively few people doesn't mean we shouldn't be working on it. Besides if we find a cure, prevention or treatment for a rare disease we free up some money that can go to a different cause.

US state department officials may not be able to take part but I don't think anything is preventing Harper from doing so. Other CPC MPs have already participated.

It's not whether Harper can do it or not its that as the leader he can't pick and choose which causes to promote regardless of how good the cause. Other MPs aren't in the same position as Harper and of course we already know that Trudeau has no problem using his public office for private gain after his public speaking tours.

He can and does pick and choose which causes to promote. All I'm saying is this cause came with an opportunity to improve his robotic image and he missed it.

I love it! In a thread about a extraordinarily successful charity you guys can't help but trash Harper. Slow Clap!

Once could argue giving the $100 is better than doing the challenge. Patrick Stewart is getting lots of cred for it.
