Because somebody is still going to get elected. Even if you don't see a "good" option on the ballot, there are still differing degrees of "bad".

-k

Yes, there are differing degrees of bad. But if one feels so completely alienated by all of the parties then spoiling one's ballot can be the best option.

Maybe it would help if I gave you an extreme hypothetical.

Let's say you had 2 options on the ballot: Stalin & Hitler. Would you vote for one of them? Or would you spoil your ballot?

How many Canadians actually do jail time for using marijuana, or possessing it in recreational quantities? I have a hunch that the number is actually miniscule, despite what pro-legalization activists might want you to think.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of smarter laws around marijuana, and if the experiments in Washington and Colorado are successful, I'd support legalization too.

But I see marijuana laws as an issue of minor importance, they are not something that will decide my vote.

-k

I dont know if its of minor importance.

Prohibition of things like soft drugs, alcohol, and prostitution, have been such an abject failure everywhere they have ever been tried, that I thing efforts at reform could actually be extremely important in the grand scheme of things. Its true... we might not have a lot of casual pot smokers in jail, but prohibition has put billions of dollars into the hands of organized criminals who invest that money into all kinds of other criminal enterprises (extortion, human trafficing, sexual slavery, etc etc). And even if there isnt a lot of prison sentences theres an awful lot of court cases. A good friend of mine is a crim-def attorney and he estimates that nearly half of his cases are related to small-time drug offenses.

You need to look at all that stuff when you guage the importance of this issue. We have a large and well established industry with sales in the billions of dollars... and we have a choice between the supply-side being run by either organized crime or regulated tax paying businessmen.

Theres an opportunity here for a really big win for all of us.

There are restrictions on it's use, and there should be more.

What restrictions?

Restrictions was the wrong word. There are regulations surrounding it, allowing everyone to know what they're eating in terms of sugar content.

I believe that if you continue to spoil your ballot that in time your suggested options may be the only ones available.

If you are that upset with your choices, have spent so much time investigating your choices and then decided to spoil your ballot then - why not put that time instead into getting directly involved. There are many ways to affect your local election besides just voting.

I get you. Such as those nutrition facts things they print on food packaging. I'm glad we do that. The salt content scares me even more than sugar on many items.

Actually new findings show that salt guidelines are in fact too low, so eat away.

How does this make sense? The hypothetical was that those were the only two choices available in the first place...

Or are you saying that if people spoil their ballot because they do not like their current options that overtime the only two options left will be Stalin and Hitler?

I have a limited amount of time and other priorities. But in a way I am involved since I discuss politics with other people such as on this forum.

I am suggesting that if you do not support our democratic system then it will make it easier for other forms, including dictatorships, to replace it.

Oh I'm sure Mulroney will give hem a run for his "Airbus" money. The Harper scandals are over the top and seem to keep popping up faster than one can keep track of. We'll see if the Robocalls conviction re-fires the EC investigation. Harper has to be a tad worried.

Harper scandals. lol

Do you have any evidence to back up your claim?

Furthermore, how is spoiling one's ballot considered not supporting the democratic system?

I am hoping out electoral system will be replaced by something more democratic.

We don't. But when governments steal millions and billions ,then we do care. Has the liberals paid the money back yet and has the NDP pay back any money yet. But then maybe not when you see the crap that happens when you try and recover taxpayers money.

With his infamous income trust lie Harper didn't just misuse tax dollars, he robbed billions in personal wealth from mainly middle age and elderly investors.

My understanding is that a participation in a democracy is taking the time to vote for somebody. Respectfully, I ask what the goal is when you spoil a ballot?

Is it some kind of message? If it is, then to whom?

What is the difference between a ballot spoiled on purpose and one spoiled by accident?

As to evidence, if one form of government is not supported by the majority then it opens the doors for someone to force another kind of government into power. - Does it not?

Well, if I was a Jew I think I'd vote for Stalin. If I was a rich guy maybe I'd vote for Hitler...

Maybe you don't care about being disenfranchised but I think most people do. That's why it's illegal to do so and why Sone will be off to jail.

It's not a scandal Harper has to wear. Unless you're trying to implicate Harper without any evidence.

We'll see what more we have to hear from Sona. Harper may personally have not been involved but it hapenned on his watch, and of course I think it's naive to think that a lone wolf 23 year old carried all this out on his own. There are a lot more ridings involved than Guelph.

So you want to believe a guy that has been convicted of Election Fraud? Where's the evidence?

The lone staffer defense has been used by the Harper party too many times, so he does start to wear them.

What are some of the other names? What ridings were stolen. Who told them to cheat? Why are more examples of Pierre Poutine and Burner phones not public? This scandal broke 3 years ago.
