Rue Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) The Swedish team is excellent. I hate them. I hate their power puff figure skating style but they are an excellent team. They have as good if not the best defence-Sweden produces the best defencemen these days in the NHL. I hate Swede players. I think the Sedins should play women's hockey.Actually no, Haley Wickenheiser would crush their fragile little butts. Well I always respected Borje Salming. He n ver hit but he was a tough sob and a great player and never backed dwn from being hit. Great player. Brilliant skater. Lundquist is a great goalie-cool under pressure. Been there before. I think Sweden has the advantage of the big ice. Their non hit skating style is better played on wider Euro rinks where they can avoid getting hit and which explains why Canada does not win Gold on Euro rinks. So as much as I hate Sweden I give them the win in that I think they will out skate the Canadians who won't be able to physically bash them into submission as they could on a smaller rink. I hope I am wrong but you can't beat the Swedes with 1 goal and Lundquist is not a guy to let you down on a big game. I think they have too many excellent skating players and puck carrying defencemen. To me the absolute lack of offence is going to break the Canadians tomorrow morning. Their lack of scoring is going to do them in with Sweden. The only way you beat Sweden on the wide rink is to start scoring! Volvo,Ikea, meat-balls, the Saab, Abba. Mats Dundin. I hate Swedes. well not really. Stockholm is a beautiful city. . Edited February 22, 2014 by Rue Quote
-TSS- Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 I wish the old Canada-cup or world cup was revived but I guess that ad long as the NHL-players play in the olympics that is considered as enough top hockey. Besides, it's difficult to find a good time for such a tournament. It had to be either early autumn pre-season when everyone is still a bit rusty ot like now in mid-season. Now that the olympic-final is on Sunday I guess on Tuesday or Wednesday there will be a full round of NHL-matches. Quote
Black Dog Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Finland running wild over the U.S, that offensive juggernaut which has failed to score now for a game and a half. Quote
Black Dog Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Ha. Patrick Kane has now missed two penalty shots. Quote
-TSS- Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 That was sweet to watch. I have to say that 20 years ago this would have been a big deal to win bronze but nowadays it is a nice consolation-prize. Quote
Boges Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Finland running wild over the U.S, that offensive juggernaut which has failed to score now for a game and a half. They mailed it in. Canada did the same thing to Finland in 1998. Quote

Of course we Canadians like to beat them, but that complete loss of mojo was just sad to watch. Canada-Sweden next! I know you'll be cheering for us, as we were for you, TSS. . Wilber Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 It was painfull to watch. Once they lose their chance at gold, North Americans seem to lose interest. Canada has looked similar in past bronze games. Oh well, Finland is my second favourite team in international hockey. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
Black Dog Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Congrats Finland! Well played! I feel some sympathy for the US team. Of course we Canadians like to beat them, but that complete loss of mojo was just sad to watch. Nah that was glorious. Quote
Shady Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 They mailed it in. Canada did the same thing to Finland in 1998. I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm pretty sure the bronze medal game doesn't mean crap to them. Especially the day after getting up for the big game yesterday. I know if Canada was in the bronze medal game, I probably wouldn't even watch it. Quote
Shady Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Nah that was glorious.Schadenfreude! Quote
Boges Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Schadenfreude! You mean Shadenkirk right? Quote

Yep....no reason for NHL players to get excited (or risk injury) for a bronze medal. Very predictable outcome. Has Gary Bettman and crew decided yet for the 2018 winter games ? Wilber Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Guess guys like Selanne and Jokinen don't get that. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
bush_cheney2004 Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Guess guys like Selanne and Jokinen don't get that. They will.....hell, the NHL claims it has a far superior "product" than Olympic hockey, plus fighting. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
Wilber Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 They will.....hell, the NHL claims it has a far superior "product" than Olympic hockey, plus fighting. Don't think so. This was Selanne's 4th Olympic medal. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
Shady Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Guess guys like Selanne and Jokinen don't get that. That's because just winning a medal for them is a big deal. For the top teams, it's gold or failure. Quote
Wilber Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Winning a medal is a big deal. Seems like European NHL stars understand that and the North Americans don't. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
Wilber Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) BTW, the Finns won the world juniors this year. They are a top team. Edited February 22, 2014 by Wilber Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
bush_cheney2004 Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Winning a medal is a big deal. Seems like European NHL stars understand that and the North Americans don't. Why should they ? Is there a rich league in Eurpoe that will pay them millions of dollars to skate/fight on cable tv ? Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
Wilber Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Why should they ? Is there a rich league in Eurpoe that will pay them millions of dollars to skate/fight on cable tv ? I don't know but they do. Maybe they just have a different sense of playing for country and team. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
Boges Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Why should they ? Is there a rich league in Eurpoe that will pay them millions of dollars to skate/fight on cable tv ? That argument would hold water if most of these players weren't already in the NHL. This was something that was debated this week as the head of the IIHF and Gary Berman had an argument over what was better, a Gold medal or a Stanley Cup. It seems Euros value international titles more. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 I don't know but they do. Maybe they just have a different sense of playing for country and team. I agree...what's more valuable to a player...a bronze medal or a Stanley Cup ? Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
Shady Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Winning a medal is a big deal. Seems like European NHL stars understand that and the North Americans don't. It's a big deal to them because they're not expected to win gold every 4 years. The expectations for them are lower, that's why they're satisfied with gold. Canada will never be satisfied nor happy to win bronze. Quote
Wilber Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 I agree...what's more valuable to a player...a bronze medal or a Stanley Cup ? Only two teams will make it to the Stanley cup final this year. Most of those NHL players won't be on one of them. The bronze was there for the taking and the Finns did.
