This is probably directed at Greg: Are you, Charles, and/or Michael H. able to view or moderate the private messages that MLW users send to each other on here?

I am not sure. I have not looked into that. I would not want to.

So far, I can not think of any situation where I would have had to.

Greg,

Please look into this. If such a permission exists to myself as moderator, turn it off. It would be inappropriate and unfair to the members.

If someone is sending you abusive or harrassing private messages, then cut and paste them into a post and start a thread.

I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger

Thanks for the response Charles.

I'm not getting any abusive messages, I'm just curious, and I guess have always been curious. On this and other message boards with PM features.

Turn off the PM option. Problem solved.

No. That is bad advice. People here still want to be able to communicate amongst eachother, I presume.

Turning of the PM option makes it impossible for them to communicate with anybody. Also, it makes it incredibly difficult for moderators to communicate with the member too.

No --- do not start a thread. Starting a thread would be responding to trolling. Myself, I do not need to have covert access to any of your PMs to moderate that sort of nonsense if you follow these instructions:

If someone sends you abusive or harassing Private Messages, DO NOT RESPOND TO THAT PERSON. Instead, report it to us. Cut and paste it as BCSNapper said, include the names with your report. Include as much information about the situation as you want to tell us.

Keep in mind, most abusive behavior in the forums --- whether it is openly public in the discussions or whether it is secret through the PM feature --- can be solved by a concerted effort to ignore it.

That is a fair question.

I have never sought to read any of your PMs. Like I said earlier, I would not want access to any of your PMs.

I genuinely enjoy reading your discussions. Everybody is free to express whatever they want to say as long as they do so civilly. That liberty of expression would be tarnished if it was cloaked with such doubt.

As members of the forum, you all deserve that privacy. I would rather quit moderating than leave you all with the suspicion that I can or will read your messages.

That's your presumption, and it doesn't apply to me. I have never enabled the PM feature and have no intention of doing so. If it's not an option for members, why make it available in the first place ?

Is that not what the report option is? I have used it to report when I see spam that people come here put up.

Charles, thanks for your thoughtful responses to my question, I appreciate your respect to our privacy on MLW. Hopefully Greg will answer soon enough.

Questions on messages seem to have been answered above.

I'm still waiting for Greg to answer, so hopefully this thread isn't locked before he does. Maybe he's away traveling on a nice Christmas vacation or something.

Please be patient with Greg. He is very busy. The thread is not going to be locked.

As for the rest of you, stop the off topic trolling. Anybody who continues to bicker about your personal drama will have an early vacation.

First off, I removed all of the off-topic chatter. The support forum should only contain replies that are relevant to the specific question asked.

Also, Charles and I are going to be cracking down on the off-topic chatter in the other areas of the forum. However, I will be addressing this issue in another support thread shortly.

Ok, out of the box there is no functionality for me to read PMs. Nor can the mods read PMs. The mods and I can read PMs if a message in a PM thread is reported -- in which case we can then read the whole discussion (for context). There is a plugin that I can install that would allow me or the mods to read PMs, but i have never really seen a reason to do that. PM are private and should stay that way. HOWEVER, i do have the ability to read PM via the MySQL database (everything is stored in the DB), which I would only do if there was an legal complaint.

Bottom line, I have enough things to do; sifting through members PMs is not something I want to waste my time doing.

Have any issues, problems using the forum? Post a message in the Support and Questions section of the forums.
