August1991 Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 I watched the speech."... pay their taxes, and play by the rules... ""... those who do the crime should do the time... "These are typical Harper lines. Yet they are ironic outside of voters who have no other choice.Senate? Harper named these Senators. "... they portray them as martyrs or even victims... " Well, Harper named them to the Senate. I am reminded of Yeltsin forcing Gorbachev to read out the names of the coup-plotters. Stephen Harper: You named Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin to the Senate. "... the Wayne Gretzky of trade agreements... " He even used the Richard Nixon line: " ... families work hard to balance their budget. So do we... " Heck, he even used the Chretien line: "... le meilleur pays au monde... " With such lines, I think that Harper is about to be hit with the modern world. He is like Denis Coderre. ---- Harper will have his 30% or so, voters who have no other choice since they will never vote Trudeau Liberal/NDP. But Harper will not get more. Stephen Harper is damaged goods. He has lost any chance of making Conservatives get 40% of voters and win a majority in the next federal election. Quote
waldo Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 why yes, yes... he did say this! Ours is not the party of entitlement, not guided by power or privilege. We didn't go to Ottawa to join private clubs or become part of some elite . Quote

Topaz Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 I watched the speech, and his"let's not forget" lines took away from the speech. The speech was more like we hear in the House in QP. Harper won't take responsibility for anything that's happen in the last 7-8 years of his government. There were many half-truths but that's Harper. Quote

Shady Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 Good point about his opposition. One of the best things Harper has going for him is the pathetic state of his political adversaries. It's similar to part of what Obama has going for him is the state of certain Republicans in congress. Harper is really the only adult in the room. Quote

I know you cherish your absolutes, but it's 2 years to the next election, and the senate crap will have died down by then. It hasn't really damaged him a ton simply because everyone knows the senate is full of hacks anyway. By the next election the budget will be balanced and we'll be heading into the final signing of that European free trade deal. He'll probably have brought out some more voter friendly stuff, as well. Who knows what'll happen next election? Not me and certainly not you. Of course, we can be pretty sure Quebec won't vote for him. He's not French enough. jacee Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 Nigel Wright has not done anything to go to jail over. You're out of the loop: Harper called in the RCMP to investigate Wright's offer of payment to Duffy that carried a condition that Duffy keep quiet. Duffy's being investigated for taking a bribe, and Wright's being investigated for bribing a Senator. These are RCMP criminal investigations. Section 119 of the criminal code has been posted repeatedly. Penalty is up to 14 years. . . Quote

He wanted to say "I have called in the RCMP to investigate this issue!" while self-righteously thumping the podium. I don't think he expects anything to actually come of the investigation, not, at least, of the alleged bribery.
