Margaret Thatcher 1925-2013

Respect, Squid, but there are still race based laws in SA. Plus, the mass murder of farmers and such. I never said Apartheid...but genocide watch rates the place rather high....

Now, I don't know about you, but I'd take that fellow seriously. His name is Jacob Zuma.

That's Julius Malema. Another sweetie-pie. He's awaiting trial for racketeering, I believe.

That's the caliber of leadership. Even ol' Mandela has been caught on camera singing the old songs of the MK. But, it sound so much like Ladysmith Black Mombasa...we'd probably sing along...lol.

I think he is mad because the lady's own words contradict their assertions.

Across the boards...at NP...G&M...CBC...rabble, etc...Thatcher 'word-bites' are making the rounds that are completely out of context. For example...this has been repeated over and over:

"There is no such thing as society."

---Maggie Thatcher

...like she was against 'society'...and no doubt puppies and freckle-faced children.

Here's the actual quote in full...

'I think we have gone through a period when too many children and people have been given to understand “I have a problem, it is the Government’s job to cope with it!” or “I have a problem, I will go and get a grant to cope with it!” “I am homeless, the Government must house me!” and so they are casting their problems on society and who is society? There is no such thing! There are individual men and women and there are families and no government can do anything except through people and people look to themselves first… There is no such thing as society. There is living tapestry of men and women and people and the beauty of that tapestry and the quality of our lives will depend upon how much each of us is prepared to take responsibility for ourselves and each of us prepared to turn round and help by our own efforts those who are unfortunate.’

You are defending a politician by using their words while dismissing their actions. What's next? Defending Tony Blair's decisions in regards to Iraq by using his words?

Thatcher did everything to stall the end of Apartheid South Africa and she supported another ugly regime, the Khmer Rouge. There is no way around these facts.

Ok, then using your logic, Jack Layton was a Taliban supporter.

Hudson clearly hasn't bothered to read the transcripts from Parliament that I provided. But, as Wilber mentioned, that gets in the way of a good rant.

Exactly. It's also rich coming from him, a supporter of terrorist groups like Hamas and the PLO.

Ok, then using your logic, Jack Layton was a Taliban supporter.

Actually, the current government right now in Afganistan still has many policies and laws that are similar the Taliban government had.

So therefore, anyone who supports the Afganistan government now, supports similar governments as the Taliban.

Furthermore,Ronald Reagan and Thatcher WERE actual supporters of the Taliban and Al Quida and gave them money, support and weapons!!!

There was no Taliban or al-Qaeda in the 1980s.

The ANC was, indeed, a terrorist organization.

Pinochet and Allende were just opposite thugs in charge of the same banana republic. Who was kissing Allende's rear?

Really???

Then who fought the Soviets in the 1980's?

Who and where was Osama bin Laden?

"Thatcher did more to release Nelson Mandela out of prison than any of the other hundreds of anti-apartheid committees in Europe," Pik Botha, the last foreign minister of the apartheid regime, said Tuesday on Talk Radio 702 in Johannesburg.

F.W. de Klerk, the last apartheid-era president of South Africa, said in a statement that Thatcher, whom he called a friend, was "a steadfast critic of apartheid." He said she had a better grasp of the complexities and realities of South Africa than many of her contemporaries.

"She exerted more influence in what happened in South Africa than any other political leader," de Klerk said. He said Thatcher "correctly believed" that more could be achieved through constructive engagement with his government than international sanctions and isolation of the South African government. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/safricans-did-thatcher-help-or-hinder-apartheid

In November 1989 the French Government, Mrs. Mitterand and South African Liberals like Breyton Breytonbach organized a giant Liberal-Socialist-ANC meeting. Thatcher repeated her demand for Mandela's release; he had thanked her via the British Ambassador, Sir Renwick, stating that his "unconditional release...is a fundamental prerequisite for meaningful negotiations." http://web.ccsu.edu/afstudy/upd13-1.html

...among the first people he visited after his release was Muammar Gaddafi. And when he came to London, the ANC central committee insisted – against his wishes – that he did not meet Thatcher. After he did finally meet her later that year he thanked her for helping to end apartheid and announced this at a press conference soon after. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/apr/10/margaret-thatcher-apartheid-mandela

1. The Mujahideen. While Paul McCartney went on to form 'Wings', 'the Beatles' were not 'Wings'.

2. al-Qaeda as we know them were a result of US forces stationed in Saudi Arabia for Gulf War I. No infidels allowed according to bin Laden.

Looks like you are right.

Still does not excuse her failure to help end apartheid!
