GostHacked Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 (edited) http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/02/22/chevrolet-ss-criticized-in-israel-for-evoking-name-nazi-organization/?intcmp=features This is a post only because it is freakin hilarious. The use of SS aka 'super sport' has been a long standing tradition with certain Chevy vehicles. The use of the SS has been used by Chevy for decades. But this might be the first car sold in Israel to hold the SS moniker. This deserves a /facepalm icon... why don't we have one yet!?? The recently introduced 2014 Chevrolet SS muscle car has been welcomed in NASCAR country with open arms, but GMs latest halo car isnt getting as warm of a response in The Holy Land. Its not the performance of the 415 hp V8-powered sedan thats at issue, but the name: SS. Its short for Super Sport, but an official at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem says the name evokes memories of Nazi Germanys paramilitary Schutzstaffel organization, infamously known as the SS, which was the primary force behind the Holocaust that killed over 6 million Jews in Nazi occupied lands. The use of this name is very inappropriate, Baruch Shuv told Yedioth Ahronoth. Shuv, who is also the head of the Orgainization of Partisans, Underground Fighters and Ghetto Rebels in Israel added that it is not a name that bring will them pride or success. I am sure using the name like 'Ghetto Rebels' brings them pride or success?? note: it's not going to be sold in Israel. Edited February 22, 2013 by GostHacked Quote

TimG Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 (edited) It is rather silly for one to assume that the same sounds will be innocuous in all languages and all cultures. The Chevy Nova did not sell so well in Spanish speaking countries. Is the fault of the Spanish that they did not understand that 'Nova' was an English word for a stellar event rather than the Spanish word 'does not go'? It goes the other way: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mmBw3uzPnJI/S6I1OIptOyI/AAAAAAABGck/bmSd3sxivZM/s1600-h/hitler_themed_restaurants_01.jpg (India) http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mmBw3uzPnJI/S6I1FeiQrYI/AAAAAAABGb8/OWJOgg24w6w/s1600-h/hitler_themed_restaurants_06.jpg (Korea) What would the reaction be if such a business opened in Toronto? I remember a patch issued by Microsoft a few years ago because they added a Japanese map symbol font. The trouble is the Japanese map symbol for temple is a backwards swastika. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Japanese_Map_symbol_(Temple).svg Edited February 22, 2013 by TimG Quote

TheNewTeddy Posted February 23, 2013 Report Posted February 23, 2013 So, to be clear, you guys don't see it as bad marketing to sell a car labeled SS to a country full of Jewish people? Quote Feel free to contact me outside the forums. Add "TheNewTeddy" to Twitter, Facebook, or Hotmail to reach me!

Canuckistani Posted February 23, 2013 Report Posted February 23, 2013 So, to be clear, you guys don't see it as bad marketing to sell a car labeled SS to a country full of Jewish people? You missed this part: However, Chevrolet spokesperson Michael Albano tells FoxNews.com that “Chevrolet has no plans to export the SS to Israel.” Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/02/22/chevrolet-ss-criticized-in-israel-for-evoking-name-nazi-organization/?intcmp=features#ixzz2LkyXpa9r Reminds me of the comedian Kevin Pollack doing a bit about what a bad idea the bacon and egg bagel was for BK. Never had one, but what's not to like? I'm sure they sell them like hotcakes. Talk about an ethnocentric pov. Chevy has had SS models for over 50 years, you'd think people would have got over it by now. Must have been a slow news day. Quote

Jewish People Driving German Cars, I believe. The SS are gone...but the Super Sport continues on. Naming a car the Hamas 400 or the Hezbollah GE...now that might be significant. Here we go again with another resident expert on Israel telling a country that comes out of the ashes of the holocaust that it should lighten up and giggle at the initials SS. You once again come on the board to taunt not just Israelis but Jews in general. You are a blatant example of the level of debate on this forum when it comes to Israel. The fact that Jews purchase German vehicles is not the issue. It was the initials SS. Certain words do not work when translated in man cultures. Tell me when was the last time you wrote a thread giggling over the fact that in Muslim countries certain products are not marketed because its offensive to Muslims? Of course here in Canada you have no idea that the laws in Canada prohibit the trademarking, copyrighting, or registering of offensive names for businesses. No in your world of Jew giggles you think Jews or holocaust survivors who find the initials SS something to giggle about. Unlike some on this board I called you for what you were many posts ago. You pose as a self righteous lecturer or morality when all you are is a petty intolerant bigot. Oh by the way genius learn to spell the name Israel correctly. Then again to expect such a thing from you given the calibre of your posts might set the bar too high. Giggle giggle they should play Hogan's Heroes on Israel tv hee hee hee. Peanutbutter Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 I think that the Israelite's have every right to be sensitive about the SS symbol for obvious reasons. Let's cut them some slack people, the entire Jewish population was nearly wiped out by a vegetarian, non smoking lunatic. If the Israelite's don't want that car sold in Israel with those badges it has every right to deny it. The auto maker should design an alternative badge to be used in Israel. This is a new car, a new model - and it doesn't have SS attached to another name, it is the name. The name of the car is the SS. Anyway, this is kind of interesting, I think - ...Toyota was forced to rename its Australian-built Avalon before its official release in 2000. The car was originally due to be called a Centaur until a journalist informed them it was the name of an Australian hospital ship sunk by a Japanese submarine in 1943, killing 268 people. Porsche also struck trouble in the United States in September 2011 when it released online ads with the tagline: "The next 911 is coming". http://canberratimes.drive.com.au/motor-news/israelis-take-offence-to-commodore-ss-badge-20130221-2esta.html People can be touchy about such things at times; it's human nature. DogOnPorch Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Your attempt to justify your Jew and holocaust baiting by cloaking yourself as a holocaust victim speaks for itself. My relatives died during the liquidation of the Minsk ghetto by the SS. They were Hamburg residents and their Stolpersteines still are embedded in the street. One of my aunts is a survivor who made it aboard the SS St Louis only to be dropped in France before Case Yellow. She made it to NYC on the last ship out of France before May 1940. She's still alive and rarely leaves NYC. My uncle (dead), taken prisoner by the British on his way from Yugoslavia to Switzerland at the end of the war (minus his uniform), served in the 13th SS as well as the 369th Devil Division as a combat engineer...both units under nominal control of the Grand Mufti al-Husseini. He was the equivalent of a Lieutenant. He was moved to Alberta to serve his POW tour then never left Canada. That's it in a nutshell. That you don't see that as being connected to the Holocaust on both ends is odd. But hey...I guess I'm just not Rue enough to count...lol. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
