N-word written in bathroom stall at U of O makes the news

Recommended Posts

So...

A racial slur scrawled on a bathroom stall at the University of Ottawa’s law faculty building has shocked students and now one group is asking the university to be more pro-active in tackling racism.

...

Levien said he hoped the university follows up on his recommendations, which include establishing an equity committee to follow up on student grievances and making anti-discrimination training mandatory for all students.

N-word written on stall door, students go nuts, want "anti-discrimination training mandatory for all students" even though nobody has any evidence that a student wrote the slur. Then a keener must have gone to the CBC about it because it was covered on CBC.ca, on TV, and on CBC radio. Our tax dollars covering this groundbreaking story! N-words in public aren't fun, but really? Next story: woman upset her phone # was scribbled on men's bathroom wall promising to a "good time" if called.

Pretty typical really. A while back there was a story about something about rape being posted in a washroom in a dorm at some university, and when the university found out they decided they had to have special sessions for all male students (including the ones who didn't live in that particular dorm) telling them how rape is bad and to respect women. It's all about the optics and politics. Leaders of organizations like universities want to be seen to be doing "everything possible" to stamp out discrimination/violence/etc, regardless of cost, effectiveness, or common sense.

Especially if they are law students looking to make a name for themselves in the field and wanting to get themselves on CBC news.

It's telling that people are more outraged at the story than the racism.

Some drunk student apparently wrote that "Canada should burn" on the memorial and no one cared so why should we care about this since it's likely someone drunk wrote this just to get a rise out of people.

There will always be racism, just because someone wrote an offenseive word in a bathroom doesn't mean that everyone needs some kind of sensitivity training, that's absurd. Some idiot did something stupid so punish everyone, great idea rolleyes.gif

Do we really have to use "N word" on this forum?

How do we know it wasn't an Afro-Canadian who wrote the word, since many Afro-Country of residence people like to hurl it around quite a bit. Just, you know, shouting out to his dawgz.

Racism is everywhere, in every direction. Toilet stalls would not be my first area of concern. Just remove it like you would other graffiti.

People cared. They just didn't care for your conclusion.

It's so depressing the way things are. It's like there's no sensible person in charge.

You ever work at a construction site and use the temporary washrooms?

Some of them are absolutely disgusting, covered with vile, vulgur, obsene comments, graphic drawings and hate!

Absolutely this should be looked into and it is a news worthy subject!

Seriously? People cared that someone wrote a bad word on a toilet stall?

These people who cared clearly are too sensitive for life. We should build a big bubble up north for them and they can move in there away from anything which might harm their fragile psyches.

People have every right to be offended by racism. It's even reasonable to expect it.

Could have been a black guy who wrote that for all anyone knows. Black people say the "n" word all the time, they say in music all the time. There is no context for them to go this crazy over silly toilet scratchings.

BTW having a "Black Law Students Association" is more racist than anything here. If I were Aboriginal or Chinese could I join? Didn't think so.

Oh please. Anyone 'offended' by something scrawled on a bathroom stall is too delicate to be allowed outside on their own.

Btw, having some memory of what being a teenage boy is like, I bet that the fuss over this will spur all kinds of repetitions. Heck, imagine how gleeful the guy was who wrote it, seeing all this making the news. I mean, it's not like he can ever be caught. And it's not like others can be either. Wouldn't surprise me to soon see it written on every bathroom stall on every campus in the country by young guys eager to see everyone run around like headless chickens over it.

Imagine what would happen if someone tried to form a White Law Students Association...

You can choose to be offended or you can accept that there will always be racists in all races and not go into panic mode demanding that eveyone have their programming changed, i would imagine that forcing people to attend sensitivity training likely makes more 'racists' than it prevents. Btw, do you think the same people that are up in arms about this are the same people type of people who cared about the cenotaph? In my experience most of the ultra progressives like youself who get all wound up about what some asshole wrote on a bathroom wall aren't lets say the remeberance types, those people are just as likely to be against remeberance day for glorifying war or promoting imperialism or any other number of silly things.

We've evolved into a society of people who so easily offended by everything. It's really sad actually. Some person writes something on a bathroom wall and you're knee jerk reaction is to spend money on training because this must mean that everyone who is white is a racist.
