DogOnPorch Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 Yes, it is quite common in older cats. Special diet to keep their weight up and there's drugs to help with the condition itself. But, no lie...it's a tough go. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

I ask because my daughter has a fat ~10 year old Siamese that will only (willing) go outside when it’s sunny, but like clockwork, when he gets back inside takes a large pee in the dirt box……..To be quite honest, after first seeing these big clumps, my wife and I thought our son was sleep walking or something and taking a leak in it. Would it be like the same warning signs in humans, ie lethargic, always sleeping and frequent urination? Not unless the human drinks water from a bowl. My cat has feline diabetes and the first symptom was crazy mad drinking (of water), followed by lots of urination as you suggested. Their hind quarters start to seize up too (paralysis). Now he gets two subcutaneous injections of Lantus insulin each day. Without insulin, he would slowly starve to death. Big cats make big pee. Mine weighs 23 pounds, so he won't fit in a normal size litter box. So I got a huge under-bed storage box and filled that with clumping litter. Bring on the urine! Moonlight Graham Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 I see lots of overweight cats, it must be a widespread problem. I don't remember seeing a lot of dogs and saying "wow that's a fat dog". But all those monster cats... Sorry to hear Teddy. I guess nothing to worry about then, the Only liquid this cat drinks is half/half (probably why he’s overweight)………But if drinking water out of the toilet is a symptom, I’ve got a Rottweiler and Bullmastiff that might need checking up on…….If either of them required daily insulin injections, I’ll be adding a tranquiliser gun to the collection Big cats make big pee. Keepitsimple Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 Lost my dear Reilly at 10 years old.....a fairly quick onset of diabetes......should have know by the continually wet cat box. Left it too long and could only say goodbye. Quote Back to Basics
bleeding heart Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 Geez, why does everyone get so attached to their damn cats? Just joking. Me too, I adore my kitty. kimmy Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 One of my friends' relatives had a cat who had diabetes and it lived to be very old, so your kitty can still have a long and happy life, Teddy! Luckily you found out in time. I love my kitty. If I had a big yard, and didn't have to go to work, I would have a dog. But I have a pretty small apartment and I can't be home enough so it just wouldn't be fair to a dog. My cat is cuddly and affectionate but independent enough that I don't have to worry about leaving him on his own all day or even for a weekend. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
DogOnPorch Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 23 pounds!! What is it? A cougar? I had a dear old black n' white male DSH that was 20lbs (not fat). He would stretch out on my legs while on the couch in what my wife termed "sausage mode". He'd get quite cross if you decided to move. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
Guest American Woman Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 20-23 pounds isn't that unusual for some breeds; Maine Coons, for example. My sister had a big Maine Coon that wasn't overweight at all, but weighed in at almost 20 pounds. It was just a big cat. And speaking of big cats, I want a Savannah! Quote
TheNewTeddy Posted May 26, 2012 Author Report Posted May 26, 2012 We reduced the dose and now the cat is off insulin. We are going to test if he can handle this well for two weeks, and if so, he won't need insulin anymore! Quote Feel free to contact me outside the forums.
