When Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced this week that March 29 will be federal budget day, the very first words out of his mouth heralded the coming “Jobs and Growth Budget.”

If the phrase sounds vaguely familiar, it should.

Taxpayers are footing the bill for a $12.4-million government ad campaign with one common message: “creating jobs and growth.”

They are also running commericals on the Economic Plan for Jobs and one for the manufacturing says "we are creating jobs for Canadaians" and then it turns to show robots doing the job, instead of human workers!

I don't want to pay for propoganda. This is robbery. It is basically campaigning using our dollars. Let the CPC pay for this and the whole "Economic Action Plan" campaign of ads.

This shouldn't be allowed & the CPC should pay it back. For a party against gov funding for parties they sure like using tax dollars for their own advertising.

Is it safe to say that the way that Harper governs is no where near the way Mulroney did? I mean both have/had their scams and members resigning, but Harper's way is more reform than conservative, in my view, which makes this party a "conservative" in name only. Harper surrounds himself with more reformers at the top than former PC.

Well maybe if the media and the unions told the truth for once ,they would not have to spend money on explaining what is really going on. Just listen to the PS unions now, canada will die if they make cuts to the PS. YOu can't trust one word that comes out of the left's mouth. Even during the days after harper mentioned about changes to the pension, the left had the elderly thinking that thier checks were going to be cut right off, caused alot of panic for nothing. It's true. The fear mongering coming from the Unions is hysterical considering while people were losing their jobs in the private sector, public sector employment actually went up!

I'm sure lots public money (forced from union dues) will be spent painting the budget as an austerity plan that rivals that of Greece.

Yep and those corporations doing the layoffs got handsome tax cuts and didn't cut top ceo's bonuses salary etc!

Can you imagine what would have happened to the Canadian economy if the government started slashing like greedy corporations?

No actually in 2008 the CPC wanted to keep the budget balanced as long as it could but the 3 other parties wanted a budget with increased spending passed so the threatened to take power.

Now perhaps the opposition parties were right, but you can't blame the deficit on the CPC. They were a minority government.

If it only costs $12 million to make people believe that we will have a better economic environment (jobs and growth), then I would say that's cheap.

If it only costs $12 million now to have smaller government spending in the future, then I would also say that's cheap.

Years ago, I wondered whether all official parties in Parliament should approve all State advertising. Nowadays, I reckon that governments abuse the power of the State - and that's life. IMHO, it seems more important to ensure that - to borrow Charest's metaphor - we can remove a government's hands from the steering wheel of the State.
