guyser Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 Metallicity is a type of evolution. Our star is made from former stars, etc. I always wondered what those who believe in Creation thought about God waiting so long to 'get busy'. Plus, new stars are being born as we post; what's the deal with God hitting "New Game" after cranking-out Earth and us? Real die-hard Creationists no doubt have a work-around for this. Even with the strange order in which God Created things over 6 days. Not to mention clearly stating (in English, at least) that... In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth. ...this aside from those silly enough to actually believe that the Universe is 6000 some odd years old. What a great thread. Learned a boatload on this one, but only read it tonight. That metallicity link had me going huh until I read your post. Now it makes some sense. Kudos all, and especially Mr C. Quote

That metallicity link had me going huh until I read your post. Now it makes some sense. Kudos all, and especially Mr C. The first stars happened quite early in the Universe's history. They would have been planetless and quite massive...and very short lived. They exploded and spewed the first elements heavier than lithium into the Cosmos. None of these could be 'alive' today but possibly might get imaged if we can look deep enough and far enough back in time. Our Sun is actually a third generation (Pop I) 'metal rich' star. A newcomer. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
Shady Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Richard Dawkins: I can't be sure God does not existHe told the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, that he preferred to call himself an agnostic rather than an atheist. Link Uh oh. Quote
DogOnPorch Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Uh oh. Why 'uh oh'? Like any scientist, Dawkins won't say anything is absolute other than perhaps mathematics. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

Smallc Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Why would you expect him to believe anything different? God probably doesn't exist (because there's no proof that he does), but we can't be sure without absolute proof refuting his existence. Quote

Even if God does exist, why should that compel me to believe in him? Personally I think if God does exist he has one hell of a lot of pain and suffering to answer for. Smallc Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Since he probably didn't say anything (because he probably isn't real), I don't see why you should. Quote

He should certainly get a smack up side the head. I mean who in their right mind would create, oh lets say...rust for example? I've been crawling around a boat chipping and grinding rust for the last few weeks and I have to say rust is the surest indication that the designer was either completely un-intelligent or just downright mean. eyeball Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 The deadly truth about oxygen. The real ugly truth is how designers of boats configure pipes, bracing and nuts and bolts in such a way as to defy the most contorted position any human could possibly assume to get at. The language emanating from the bowels of the boat recently would probably burn the ears off any creator. DogOnPorch Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Yup...plus, you have to wonder about a Creator that chooses one of the most damaging elements on the periodic table to support life if he/she/it is all powerful. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

And it should be added that Dawkins is only in the remotest sense an agnostic. Him being agnostic would be like saying a believer that questions their faith in the back of their mind at any point in their life is also an agnostic. Quote

My scaler makes a real racket too - it masks the cursing when I bang my noggin on something. See, there's a point to making you suffer after all. If everything was perfectly easy, you'd have nothing to do. Indeed, if all was preordained there'd be no point in existing at all. There'd only be a harmonious state, in perfect equilibrium. No change, no action. That's the way it was, before the universe was created. Quote
