Frankly,considering the Khmer Rouge and it's detesting of all things intellectual,artistic,and,religious based...I'm surprised they didn't just blow the place up!!! Ya' know...Kinda like the Taliban and how it destroyed many ancient religious edifices and artifacts... With their Jihad attitude, the plan seems more to steel from the local Christains and killing the planet's Jews rather than any plans for normal tourism, et al. The Army is in a bit of a bind. Then President Wade attempted to run for a third term, something many saw as illegal. Wade's party, the Democratic Party, held nearly all the seats in Parliament after the opposition boycotted the last parliamentary election. Macky Sall ran against Wade, and managed to defeat him on the second round, even beating Wade in his own constituency. Wade manned up and announced he had been defeated. The 2007 Parliamentary elections, as mentioned, had been boycotted. The result was thus 131 seats for the Democratic Party and their Sopi coalition, and 19 seats for everyone else. The Democratic Party considers itself Liberal, partly because of a law that was passed in 1976 that said the only parties allowed are Socialist, Communist, and Liberal, and the first two were already taken. In reality the party is a personality based catch all party often found in developing countries. In the 2001 Parliamentary elections, the Democrats won 89 seats, with the Progressives winning 11, and the Socialists winning 10. It was from these two opposition parties that the 3rd and 4th placed candidates in the Presidential election were from. Sall himself was from the Democratic Party. PRI-18 PAN-8 PRD-6 PRI totals include 10 straight PRI candidates, and 8 merged PRI-Greens. But the method for electing Senators is very strange, thus the end result will actually be as follows. For the winners you double the number PRI-26 PAN-16 PRD-12 Then the second placed party also gets a seat PAN-13 PRI-12 PRD-7 Subtotal of PRI-39 PAN-28 PRD-19 Then an element of PR PRI-13 PRD-9 PAN-9 ALL-1 Totals PRI-52 PAN-37 PRD-28 ALL-1 if my numbers are right, and they may not be. There is also an element of PR. Both parties are talking; they are also talking to the Democratic Party, which took 10.3% of the vote. Final results are not expected until the 17th. The Muslim Brotherhood has conceded that unlike in Tunisia and Egypt, they will not win this election; rather the Liberals will win the most seats.
