At least (unlike the NDP show) we don't have to watch that D&P show.

You don't have to watch this one either...

Didn't know where to put this but.. this is how popular the leader Layton was

NDP have an up hill battle in Quebec now.. no matter whom the leader will be saturday

Exactly how strong was that Orange Wave in Quebec last federal election?

That surge New Democrats will fondly recall this weekend as they gather to crown a new leader?

At least six first-time MPs in Quebec got elected in May of 2011 without spending a cent on local campaign expenses, filings at Elections Canada show.

Did I hear or read that a majority of votes have already been cast even before the debates?

Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.

All Dippers should remember if you don't vote Mulcair it will be an "overwhelming insult" to Quebec!

I guess I've insulted Quebec.

Libby is asking NDP members voting for the leader to "connect the dots" and select Topp.

“I watched while Brian, working hand-in-hand with Jack, brilliantly organized some of the best election campaigns this country has ever seen,” Ms. Layton wrote, repeatedly emphasizing how close Mr. Layton had been to Mr. Topp until Mr. Layton succumbed to cancer last August.

When The Hill Timesasked Ms. Davies whether party members might take the letter as a sign from Mrs. Layton that her son wanted Mr. Layton to succeed him, Ms. Davies replied: “Let me just say this, Jack was very close to his Mom, she followed politics very, very closely.”

---

“His team were very close to him, and Brian Topp was very much a part of that, and I think people need to look at who he was working with over so many years. Brian was such a key part of everything that Jack did and the way he did it. I think it’s interesting that the women that Jack entrusted in leadership positions in his caucus, we’re all supporting Brian Topp because we feel that he’s the one that was closest to Jack and will continue the legacy of Jack’s work, and he represents that.”

“I think those are important things, and you know, maybe people need to connect the dots,” Ms. Davies said.

---

“If you read Mr. Mulcair’s comments in various interviews and even in the leadership debates, he leaves a very clear impression that he thinks the NDP still has to modernize, that we have to change and based on his comments, I think many people see that as moving to the centre, that’s been quite clear,” Ms. Davies said.

“Mr. Topp does not share that view,” she said. “He believes that we can remain true to our social democratic principles. We already are a modern party. It doesn’t mean to say there isn’t more work to be done, but this idea that we’re somehow stuck back in the fifties, it throws cold water on all the work that Jack did, so I think there is quite a difference there in terms of the view of the party and the view of Canadian politics.”

Well, Libby maybe not stuck in the fifties. But with a Broadbent/Topp combo it would be more like going back to the seventies and eighties.

Well, the latest poll shows the NDP is tied with the Tories and the NDP don't have a leader as yet! http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/canada-politics/poll-shows-conservatives-ndp-tied-popular-support-151339771.html

The polls dont really matter at this point. Maybe in late 2014 realistic trends will be able to be detected and used as a predictor for the next election. A lot can and probably will happen in the next 3 years or so.

Just wait until after the huge tribute to Layton the NDP will roll out at their leadership convention. That alone should give them another 5% bump in their popularity numbers.

Angus Reod has them 8 points behind the Conservatives, which is consistent with all recent polls.

I'm sorry, but Nathan Cullen is doing terrible, and would get curb stomped by Harper.

I just signed in to say I enjoyed his convention speech. I would say his is doing pretty good considering his standing pre-leadership race and his liberal co-operation thing.

Now whether or not he can go toe to toe with Harper is another thing. You never know though.

It was so....not relevant to most Canadians. It was poorly delivered - despite the talk at the convention, he isn't JL. I saw that, and I didn't care...and he didn't make me care. Also, he railed against economic activity that can be done safely with precautions, and that kind of blind ideology will always lose the important race in the end.

I think part of that is that it is directed to NDP members right now. I liked the delivery but I agree that he isn't like JL. I've heard the comparisons even before today and I don't see it. I like Cullen. With that said at the very least the comparison is pre-mature. That might have more to do with his age though.

I liked that he talked about party unity. That might appeal with people who've been reluctant to go with him.

Even if he doesn't win he could position himself well and gain big from this.

As far as the environmental stuff goes, that is more pandering a bit. Plus he is from BC. I don't generally side with the NDP on those issues but I understand that those things need to be said and are directed at that chunk of the base.

Meanwhile, Broadbent continues to entertain us with his "Stompin' Tom" act.
