How many people would use it? Currently only a third of people use a metropass, and even if that number were to double under Presto, there are not many collector jobs you can cut. How many stations have 2 collectors on duty at the same entrance? A max of 15-20 during rush only. You could cut up to perhaps 10% of collector jobs, but you'd always need someone on duty for those who do not have Presto

Then they should have no problem switching to Presto. It would make live a lot easier for commuters who can't walk to work from Union Station after getting off the GO-Train.

I have no idea what jobs he's referring to. Would LRTs add more union jobs than subways?

I think basically all their messaging is just starting to fuse together into a ball of mush. It'll be interesting to see what happens when Save Our Subways collides with Stop The Gravy Train.

Don't you see? Union are bad, civil servants are bad , subways are good, LRTs err I mean streetcars are evil. Never mind facts.

...Actually public service unions, for public services that hold a legalized monopoly, are indeed "bad", but only when they go on strike.

Ford minions plan TTC purge

One of five city councillors behind the expected firing of the city’s transit chief suggested Sunday that more senior transit managers may lose their jobs for not “respecting the office of the mayor.”

“We will discuss whether removing some managers — and it may in fact be three, four, five — we may discuss whether that’s the way to go,” said Frank Di Giorgio, a TTC commissioner allied with Mayor Rob Ford, and one of the councillors who called a special TTC board meeting for Tuesday where it is believed chief general manager Gary Webster will be sacked.

Di Giorgio said the responsibility of the city’s bureaucracy is to follow the will of the mayor and achieve the objectives set out by his mandate, which TTC managers have failed to do.

Strange. Blob Ford was recently comparing his critics on council's left to Stalin, yet here he goes, ousting professional staff for insufficient ideological purity.

These guys are scum.

Oh well. At least the Councillor is honest about this having nothing to do with Wlebster's qualifications or performance, but everything to do with bis refusal to peddle non-

sense.

That is absolutely appalling. Firing someone for doing their job well. What a dirtbag. The article notes, "Webster, a civil engineer who has worked his entire 35-year career at the TTC." This guy is going to be really hard on this guy.

Yeah that $400,000 severance he's slated to get is going to suck.

Apparently dude was going to retire soon anyway.

So where does unnecessarily spending nearly a half million dollars to shitcan a guy for not toeing the political line fall under on the "respect for taxpayers" continuum?

Yes, this incident has convinced me that there is no point of trying to dialogue with the current administration.

Yes because the David Miller regime was the epitomy of compromise.

Apparently the last guy who had this job; Rick Ducharme quit cuz he couldn't work with Miller and Co.

Politics is more involved with municipal issues than provincial, and that, than federal.

In fact, the issues people generally truly care about tend to be Municipal, yet, people pay the least amount of attention to municipal issues.

In all fairness, the left is just as willing to do the same. Ford is no "worse" than past mayors.

If it's applicable then sure.

I remember when council initially defeated David Miller's plan to introduce the Vehicle Registration Tax and the Land Transfer Tax he had a full blown meltdown and started threatening to cut TTC service right away.

Funny similar stuff was said in this article that was said after Ford lost the budget vote and the transit city vote.

I think it sends a clear message that there is now a hole in that well-guarded and cemented Fortress Miller," said Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37, Scarborough Centre).

"A crack is there. Now what we have to do is broaden that and make that a little larger so that they can start to really listen to the people of Toronto."

Miller's political strategy was to impose the new taxes, then tell the provincial and federal governments it's time for them to do what they can to solve the city's financial problems. It didn't happen.

And Miller warned councillors that programs are likely to suffer as a result – such as swimming lessons for a boy he knows who lives in public housing.

"If you believe in services like helping feed people, if you believe in services like recreation programs for people that have nothing – if you support this deferral, what you're saying in effect is: I want those services to be cut, because that will be the consequences," Miller said.

So without taxes that Toronto hadn't seen up until that point Miller basically said he'd have to take a hatchet to city services.

Toronto has been deeply in trouble ever since Harris downloaded services.

And Ontario has been deeply in trouble ever since Paul Martin downloaded services though transfer cuts.

And Canada has been deeply in trouble ever since Trudeau came to office.
