bush_cheney2004 Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 The US Navy has pulled back its aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan, after seventeen of its crew were exposed to radiation while flying sixty miles off the Japanese coast. http://www.thenation.com/article/159234/fukushimas-spent-fuel-rods-pose-grave-danger Old news....the 50 mile limit went into effect before today. Post To The Left Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 The YEN is apparently soaring right now as speculators think Japanese companies will sell over seas assets to help with reconstruction. The high yen will hamper Japan's export industries but will help buy reconstruction material at a time when oil is high. The last time the YEN was this high was after the Kobe quake. Quote

dre Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 You've been trying to exaggerate since day 1 and have been trying to link the Japanese reactors to Chernobyl: "one nuclear expert said today that in a worst case scenario it could end up Chernobyl times 3, only minus the chimney effect of fires to spread the contamination long distances..." "Chernobyl ... had a steam explosion the following meltdown created fires which spread the contamination...fire in the area of spent fuel rods in Japan threatens the same situation...the cause of the meltdown maybe different but the results will be the same..." "well now it may be potentially six times worse than chernobyl, only one reator melted down in Chernobyl there are six in various stages of meltdown or impending meltdown in Japan..." "different causes the results end up the same...[chernobyl like the Japan reactors] meltdown, fire, contamination..." Fission is very relevant to this situation as you attempt to keep comparing chernobyl to the Japan reactors. Chernobyl was an out of control nuclear reaction that caused intense radiation. When the explosion happened the highly radiated contents of the Chernobyl reactors were spread by HUGE fires that burned for weeks. Here is the definition of a Dirty Bomb: "a bomb made from nuclear waste combined with conventional explosives that is capable of spreading radioactive material over a very wide area" It's called a dirty BOMB of course it needs an explosion. When you say dirty bomb it implies that you mean explosion. Water's boiling point is 100 °C the water isn't even boiling. Yesterday small flames were seen for about 30 min before they were put out. Yesterday the smoke stopped and the live shots today don't show any smoke at all. There is some white steam (Remember its cold at the plants so steam will show white) which shows that water is still present in the reactors. Fission is very relevant to this situation as you attempt to keep comparing chernobyl to the Japan reactors. Chernobyl was an out of control nuclear reaction that caused intense radiation. When the explosion happened the highly radiated contents of the Chernobyl reactors were spread by HUGE fires that burned for weeks. I dont think your characterization here is accurate. A full nuclear meltdown happens when the fuel rods melt down into whats call corium and that corium escapes into the outside world. In both Chernobyl and Japan meltdowns happened not as a result of fission per say but a host of other circumstances (fires and explosions that destroyed the plant). In chernobyl the chain of events that lead to the disaster was a power surge, and a graphite fire. And fission doesnt stop when you pull the rods out of the core anyways because theres lots of free roaming neutrons inside the plant. The main difference between Japan and Chernobyl is that Chernobyl didnt have any containment vessel at all, so when the graphite moderators caught fire that helped dispurse radition into the atmosphere. Even if they do have a "full meltdown" in Japan the disaster wont be as bad, but its mainly due to the containment vessel not anything else. Quote I question things because I am human. bush_cheney2004 Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 And fission doesnt stop when you pull the rods out of the core anyways because theres lots of free roaming neutrons inside the plant. Agreed...nuclear reactors are started and shut down in phases that strive to manage this "latent heat". Hmmm, pretty impressive, on purpose you say, why would you be down there? Since the question asks specifically for the depth record for a SUBMARINE, the answer is the Soviet K-278 Komsomolets, with a design operating depth of 1,250 meters (4,101 feet). eyeball Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 That's good news....time to start reeling in this runaway media disaster. Japan's nuclear crisis now hangs largely on whether it can get control over the radioactive waste held in pools of water at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi power plant.Workers have struggled to cool the used nuclear-fuel rods held in these pools, in an urgent fight to prevent a release of significant quantities of radiation into the environment. On Thursday morning, helicopters from the Self Defense Forces, Japan's version of the military, began dumping water over the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex, according to government broadcaster NHK. MARCH 17, 2011 March 17th...you'll have to get up pretty early to reel this one in. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

Post To The Left Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 On a lighter note, dog refuses to leave his hurt companion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3TM9GL2iLI Translation: We are in Arahama area. Looks like there is a dog. There is a dog. He looks tired and dirty. He must have been caught in the tsunami. He looks very dirty. He has a collar. He must be someone's pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid. Oh, there is another dog. I wonder if he is dead. Where? Right there. There is another dog right next to the one sitting down. He is not moving. I wonder. I wonder if he is alright. The dog is protecting him. Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay. I can't watch this. This is a very difficult to watch. Oh. Look. He is moving. He is alive. I am so happy to see that he is alive. Yes! Yes! He is alive. He looks to be weakened. We need to them to be rescued soon. We really want them rescued soon. Oh good. He's getting up. It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all. Quote

GostHacked Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Many of you are still living in some sort of denial to how bad this situation is. Many of you who said it was not that bad at the start, have been proven wrong at every turn. Oh its not worse than 3 mile Island .. then got worse, ... oh it's not Chernobyl, and it's quickly approaching that stage. The US ships turned tail and ran, Japanese officials and other officials around the world are telling it's citizens to move out to an 80km radius. The spent fuel rods are exposed and causing major radiation, and this is 4 reactors and no just the single one in Chernobyl. Workers have been dying because of the intense radiation. These brave men know its a suicide mission. I thank them for their bravery and determination. In the end I think they would have died for nothing, because the situation has been out of control since the start. I called it, and I wish I was fucking wrong, I really do. But I am not. The latest attempt at the water drops for the choppers is not going to work. It's out of control and most of you here understand that. None of you asshats laughed at 9/11, or the 7/7 bombings, or the quake and tsunami that hit Indonesia and many other parts of South Asia. None of you laughed when San Fransisco had the big quake in 88. None of you laughed when the Challenger and Discovery blew up. None of you laughed when New Zealand got the major quakes of Chile of last year. If a nuke plant in the USA was going through this issue, none of you asshats would be laughing. None of you. As long as it's not in your back yard, none of you give a shit. Quote

ToadBrother Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Big deal.....President Jimmy Carter did the same thing. Pennsylvania survived anyway. How many dead bodies from earthquake/tsunami vs. damaged reactors? Apparently there are now cases of diarrhea and related ailments, suggesting cholera or other water-borne infections. If a modern First World country like Japan, where probably no immune system in decades has come close to those kinds of nasty bugs, gets a cholera outbreak, the reactor problems will seem like small potatoes.
