jbg Posted February 11, 2011 Report Share Posted February 11, 2011 The problem with the US's empire building,was that it was done under the guise of "freedom and democracy",when it was really about propping up Fascist autocrats who wouls do the State Department's anti-Communist bidding.This,in almost all cases,meant almost no freedom and virtually no democracy.Only the enriching of the home of the empire...When the U.S.'s "empire building" in the Republic of China (circa 1949) and Iran stopped, the result was "freedom and democracy" right?Just checking. However one sees Tibet issue (BTW I'm firmly on the side of Tibet's right for freedom) by it's nature it's China's immediate concern (like Tibet's). It's much more challenging to see the connection between abstract "democracy" and the immediate interest of its great proponents (in the word if less so in the act). What makes him so sure that there is such a thing...If I vote for a person to represent me..and that person loses the election - then I live under a dictatorship at that point.... And they're organized. This is potentially a good sign as well. The Left, socialists etc, were a big part of the movement to oust the Shah. BTW, Laurence Solomon makes the point in his column today that the urban people involved in the demonstrations in Cairo etc are a far cry from the rural people who make up the great bulk of Egypt's population.
