Shady
We have had 4- that's FOUR- prime ministers who were not North American born, And they've been all horrible.
Smallc
And they've been all horrible. Sir John A. MacDonald, despite any scandal, was certainly not a horrible prime minister. Without him, there would be no country.
Esq
Sir John A. MacDonald, despite any scandal, was certainly not a horrible prime minister. Without him, there would be no country. Ironic you mention this since John A McDonald was a lawyer by profession, and Stephen Harper is the first PM without having a legal background. I make an exception for him, considering the period in time.
Jack Weber
Good Lord! We have had 4- that's FOUR- prime ministers who were not North American born, John Turner being the most recent. Saipan, if you have so little grasp of the rudimentary civics of this country, you have more nerve than a bad tooth to comment at all about the politics and political structure of the place. You should be ashamed. What should we expect from a Canadian of Convenience?

betsy
Perhaps if you understood history and how the Liberals did precisely what the letter said, you would understand Harper's motivations at that point in time. You would also better understand his animosity toward the Liberal Party - and that of many Western Canadians. Why do you think Chretien won all 100 seats in Ontario and almost none out West....because the Liberals' policies completely alienated the West. Basically, that letter said - if you are going to pillage the West and bend over to Quebec, we are going to act like Quebec and use our Constitutional proviledge to manage more of our own responsibilities. Remember Topaz - the motto of the Reform Party was "The West Wants In!". Think about the meaning of that. Instead of the Firewall, Harper determinedly united the Alliance and Reform parties and went about resolving this unity issue - reducing the Liberals from a Central Canada powerhouse to a couple of regional rumps......but the important point is that "The West is now In!".....so the Firewall letter that you raised is just history - important to understand the times - but simply history. Thanks for explaining that.
