Personally I don't see a problem. Just about every other holiday / significant day is heavily commercialized. I'm sure there's lots of people that think Christmas should be a time for religious celebration, prayer, family bonding, and not a time of "crass commercialism".

This is a bit like having a 9/11 sale though. Remembrance day isn't a celebration it's a day of remembrance.

Well...

Coming from a free market libertarian,I'm not surprised that you have the ability to commodify the shed blood of those who fought for our freedom...

It's simply classless...

Sorry, but in my opinion, you are so wrong it's virtually defies description...

Haven't been in an Eddie Bauer for years-the place is more or less void of decent product-now this.

Nah, it's pretty decent quality. Better than MEC. Pretty square styling though, but not as bad as LL Bean.

But if stores are going to be allowed to be open on Remembrance Day (and in Manitoba that's only been in the last few years--and they can't open until 1 pm), then what better way to honour the war dead than good value and savings?

Give most of the profits from it to veterans organizations. Least they can do for trying to capitalize on their sacrifices.

Im sorta with bonham on this... I dont think theres much that a capitalist wont do to hawk consumer goods.

Take easter for example... The celebration of re-animating a rotting corpse. If you can hawk goods with that then well...

Except that a lot of the people you are insulting are still walking around or have family members who are.

We are talking about honouring real soldiers with remembrance day, something pretty much everyone agrees with. Not something that's Christian specific that didn't actually happen.

This tacky to the extreme, and really makes no commercial sense.

And for the record, the commercialism of Christmas and Easter is equally disgusting. But i've been raised to love my Cadbury chocolate eggs and shiny electronics wrapped under the Jesus Tree. If i ever have kids hopefully i'll be smart enough not to spoil them on Xmas morning as much as i was.

Though to be fair the Christians stole Christmas from the pagans.

Remembrance Day in Canada and the Commonwealth falls on the same day as Vetrans Day in the US. The Americans have been having Vetrans day sales for years...there is a small difference in the two days(one honours vets, the other honours the dead), they probably didn't see it as anything other than a different name.

This is just one of those little things that americans need be cognisant about when marketing in a foreign country and why they often need a domestic consultant.

The Americans have Memorial Day (at the end of May) to honor the "dead"...and lots of Memorial Day sales too.

Not when they drive across the border to get cheaper gas and cigarettes! ;)

Quite a few years ago, when Southam still existed and they outsourced their US ad sales to a US based rep firm, my company was contracted to help them explain the subtle nuances of the Canadian market to their US based clients who advertised in Canada, to Canadians. The simple things were simple...and we were well paid to explain that Thanksgiving is in October, so the Thanksgiving day sales ads in november were anachronistic, or that Dec 26th was a huge shopping day.

Thanksgiving Day was only relevant to most American holiday shoppers as the day before Black Friday, which now has been diluted to earlier promotions in November. December 26th is also a very busy shopping day in the United States. Boxing Day and other Canadian holidays were often noted on calendars sold in the US as well.
