For the world community of Muslims, known as the "umma," this might be the dawning of the "e-umma."

This week Muxlim.com, an Islam-focused Web portal based in Finland, launched what it calls the world's first virtual Muslim world.

The application, Muxlim Pal, allows users to create avatars or alter egos that interact with other players while following a proper Muslim lifestyle. Users can design their online pal to wear a "hijab" (or head scarf) and choose to pray in their custom-designed room.

IMHO, Muslims (and many south Asians) have a tendency to live in an imaginary world anyway. So it seems a perfect mix. If you can't make this world to your choosing, use technology to make your world virtual.

Hmmm. So World of Warcraft is loaded up with Muslims and South Asians too. Us North Americans aren't into fantasy I guess. Star Wars was an allegory and Spiderman reflects reality. You have heard of Hollywood?

Peter, you got my point.

Some people in the West also indulge in fantasy and imaginary worlds too.

Been to a show lately?

Any figures on how many video games sell in NA, at that time of the fantasy holiday of Christmas?

You know the video games such as rock star that have spawned rock star "competitions" coming to a mall near you.

But hey, if you can't chose the world you live in, may as well live in a fantasy one, ala technology

holy assumptions and judgements.

Insults are the ammunition of the unintelligent - do not use them. It is okay to criticize a policy, decision, action or comment. Such criticism is part of healthy debate. It is not okay to criticize a person's character or directly insult them, regardless of their position or actions. Derogatory terms such as "loser", "idiot", etc are not permitted unless the context clearly implies that it is not serious. Rule of thumb: Play the ball, not the person (i.e. tackle the argument, not the person making it).

Seems pretty real to me, no different than a lot of other sites.

'Some' August? No blanket North Americans tend to live in fantasy worlds? Just some North Americans? Yet Muslims (and many south Asians) have a tendency to live in an imaginary world ?

An aberation for us NA's but the norm for Muslims?

I checked out the site. I don't see what you're talking about August, it's the exact same concept as facebook... but for Muslims.

So could it be that all facebook users like "imaginary" worlds too, or that Muslims like social networking as much as facebook users do? I'm more apt to go with the latter.

Fair point BC Chick. But then, think of the consequences.

An imaginary world? Like the internet? Or maybe MapleLeafWeb?

Also, that is just about one of the most useless, pointless generalizations I've ever seen.

Hopefully they don't use it to spread terror and hate.

If words are "terror and hate" then it may be you we need to be worried about .

But we arent, we laugh , pat you on the head and sit you at the kiddies table.

See..I knoew there would be something you would find attractive about it....but before you get all excited about it, the Sharia they want concerns only family law....no jursidiction on homosexualality, Jews or abortion.....just divorce and child support.

Never the less, parochial family courts is a dead issue for at least a few years now since they have been over ruled.

This is as dumb as Faccebook, Myspace, SIMS, Second Life .. ect ect ect .. or any other social networking sites.

I guess people are not happy with the life they have to go and spend all this time in an alternate world. Or simply too much friggin time on their hands.

Also, if you pray in this virtual Muslim world, how do you know what direction you should be praying?

Mr Canada,

I resent that you hide behind the name of "Canada" to spew your racist filth.

Your posts are based on the worst kind of stereotypes and display your narrow field of knowledge of the real world.

Please spare us the ignorant, ill-informed narrow-minded one liners, "Canada".

If you have something of substance to add, fine, but these hit-and-run attacks of no substance are racist, and not acceptable in a public forum, imo.

My Canada includes rights of Indigenous Peoples. Love it or leave it, eh! Peace.

Hmm, what kind of avatars can you use? Didn't the Taliban blow up some ancient Budhas because they say you can't show a representation of a human face - ever - no matter what?

Maybe i should join, and create an avatar of a hot, busty blonde! See how many curses, threats - and sexual proposals I get.

What's wrong with Facebook? I happen to live far away from where I was born and raised, so it allows me to keep in touch with all my old friends and family. I don't see why people are aggressive towards it by calling it "dumb" and saying people that use it have "too much friggin time on their hands" or "are not happy with the life they have."
