Three Voting Recounts 2008

Recommended Posts

Do you think the Conservatives will try re-counting their way to a majority (a la Bush in 2000)?

:D

We have a sore loser post winner! You get a year's supply of kleenex and a video containing the actual historical account of the Dems recounting several times hoping for a win.

I hope Ujal loses the recount. He's a former provincial NDPer who switched parties because the price was right, just like Emerson. But 143 seats is enough for me. It appears Canada needs to take some more baby steps to a Tory majority.

Indeed. And 8 years after the fact. Too funny. Especially when The United States Supreme Court agreed 7 - 2, that the way the recount was going was unconstitutional.

I'd love to see Ujjal lose his job.

This is far from over.

The LINK has also learned that there were many irregularities in voting in the riding with one particular poll – which had the maximum of 500 votes to be cast, but allegedly had a final count of more than 900 votes with more than 800 allegedly credited to the Liberal candidate. Election Canada’s Indo-Canadian workers are also being accused of bias and improper conduct at the polls. With more than 250 spoiled ballots, which very well could have been for Young, there could be an entirely new outcome in Vancouver-South that might actually end on a sour note for Dosanjh!

Whatever the outcome, the stink will linger.

I'll be happy if the person who got the most votes is declared the winner.

I would have been happy if Canadians had been the winners, but that still remains to be seen...

I like your quote and it made me think of this. Any of you seen this documentary:

Does that put into question a lot of your beliefs?

Two more recounts - http://www.ottawasun.com/News/National/200...171346-sun.html

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO -- A judicial recount of votes has been ordered in the Toronto-area riding Brampton West, Elections Canada announced yesterday.

The application for a judicial recount was made by Conservative candidate Kyle Seeback. Liberal Andrew Kania won the riding by 223 votes.

The recount will be conducted by an Ontario Superior Court judge.

The Brampton West recount is the fifth ordered following last week's federal election.

A recount has been ordered in the Quebec riding Brossard-La Prairie.

Marcel Lussier of the Bloc Quebecois was re-elected by just 102 votes over Liberal candidate Alexandra Mendes.

Elections Canada says the recount will be held today in Longueuil, Que.

Other recounts will be held in the P.E.I riding of Egmont, where Conservative Gail Shea won her seat by just 62 votes; in Kitchener-Waterloo, where Conservative Peter Braid's margin of victory was 48 votes; and in Vancouver-South, where Liberal Ujjal Dosanjh defeated Conservative Wai Young by 33 votes.

The judicial recount in Egmont, PEI confirms Conservative Gail Shea's electoral victory.

As a result of this recount, Milligan did gain seven more votes than he had after the general election. But it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

Will there be a cabinet post for Shea?

It’s a virtual certainty Mrs. Shea will join cabinet. The province has traditionally had a cabinet seat when it has an MP on the government benches. And she has had provincial cabinet experience. She served in the cabinet of Conservative premier Pat Binns from 2000 to 2007, but was defeated in 2007 when the Liberals came to power.

Even Liberal Premier Robert Ghiz has signalled he is expecting to work with Shea in a cabinet capacity. The major question now appears to be whether she will be given a junior portfolio, like a secretary of state, or a full ministry. Veteran Affairs has been a popular portfolio for P.E.I. MPs, since the head office is located in Charlottetown.

I don't know much about Ms. Shea. But it would be refreshing to have a few more women in Harper's cabinet.

The Bloc's Marcel Lussier thought he had been re-elected in Brossard-La Prairie riding by just 102 votes over Liberal candidate Alexandra Mendes.

But a recount by a Quebec Superior Court judge has found that Mendes defeated Lussier by 69 votes in the October 14th federal election.

Lussier, an engineer and environmental specialist, had held the riding since 2006.

The new tally gives the Liberals 77 seats nationally and drops the Bloc to 49.

Good news for the Liberals and Quebec federalists.

It's hard to keep track of these recounts. Here's one I wasn't aware of involving Liberal Keith Martin in BC.

The B.C. Supreme Court has ordered a judicial recount of federal election results in a key Vancouver Island riding.

Incumbent Liberal Keith Martin held onto his seat by only 68 votes over Conservative lawyer Troy DeSouza in the Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca riding following last week's election.

The Liberal Party and supporters cheating? Say it ain't so.

Are you forgetting so quickly that the conservatives won the last election by cheating by overspending on their campaign? - that is they openly admited to breaking election laws.. and also they broke their own election law to call the election...

perhaps cheating isn't the right word for conservatives perhaps criminal is a better word.

After the recount, Dosanjh's win narrowed to 23 votes.

High profile Liberal MP Ujjal Dosanjh will hold onto his seat in Vancouver South after a judicial recount awarded him a 22-vote victory Friday.

The recount was ordered when the final tally in last week's federal election showed Dosanjh beat Conservative candidate Wai Young by just 33 votes.

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...1024?hub=Canada

That was close but not as close as Anne McLellan's 1993 win by 12 votes.

McLellan has never had an easy time getting elected. The former University of Alberta law professor was first elected in 1993 by one vote, which edged up to 12 on a recount.

As I recall, her consistently close electoral wins earned her the nickname "Landslide Annie".

Just to let you know, it's not ok for either party to cheat.

If you are not capable of creating an electoral bureacracy that can count - better not have an election untill you are sure that you have people in place that are focused and accurate and that can count. Recounts should not exist in abundance - If you need more than one simple recount then the probablity exists that even that more than one recount is a sign that they system is flawed - I loved the day when you would have a piece of low tech highly reliable paper with one frinking X scratched into a box - Look at the poor Americans - ballots that consist of three damned pages - electronic voting that is supposed to be a speedy convienience - and line ups for early voting where one waits for three hours - keep it stupid stupid - one X means one vote and who ever gets the most wins - the rest is an open door to fraud. The definition of fraud is to acquire something valuable though deception - and mine and your freedom is of value - a re-count signifiys skull duggery.

Oleg, a recount is automatic when there are "x" number of votes between the winner and the second place candidate. In itself, a recount does not signal that anything fraudulent occurred.
