Michael Hardner Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Of course, you'd have to extend this offer of refuge to any "conscientious objectors and illegal draft dodgers " who applied as refugees - not just Americans. It would only be fair, after all.The implications are interesting. I wonder how many Turks, who are just one of many countries with mandatory military service, would come to Canada. They have until age 38 to complete their mandatory service. I wonder how many would opt to move to the open doors of the Canada you envision, simply by showing up and saying "I am persecuted". They'd have a slam dunk, de facto case for residency. Is that your intention? My response: Uh... um.... er.... No, I hadn't thought of that and no I don't have a response. Smallc Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 And Congress can override the President's veto, which it did very recently. The United States has a great system of checks and balances with three branches, each with their own authority, with the legislative consisting of the House where each state is represented according to population and the Senate where each state has equal representation-- not to mention the powers/authorities left to the states. I do believe it's one of the greatest democracies in the world. Bottom line. Anyone who says the U.S. is not a democracy is showing ignorance on their part. I know, I was only joking. Of course the US is a democracy. The Republic and Westminster systems are the best in the world. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 I think it depends on the war they are being drafted to. Bush's war into Iraq, was just that, a war for oil, to make Iraq the centre of the US military in the Middle-East as part of controlling the world. I don't see how killing thousands of people in Iraq and thousands of US soldiers being left with one arm, leg, or brain was worth going into Iraq to change the leadership. Well, I gues that's why the Americans didn't ask you for advice....none of them were drafted. Its cause almost 4000 military lives and that not countring the ones that went over and came back to kill themselves to avoid going back! Bush was totally wrong in this war and anyone who wanted to come to Canada or any other country should be welcomed and I hope Cheney and Bush gets theirs unless Bush leaves for Paraguay before they can impeach him or a returning soldier goes on a hunting spree like happen to the return Nam vets! ...And Canada has been sending the deserters back home. Bush will get a big expensive presidential library and pension....not impeachment. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
guyser Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 Bush will get a big expensive presidential library and pension....not impeachment. I know Bush will get the Presidential Library, but doesnt that ring at least somewhat funny? Clinton should have got the Humidor Collection...... Dion/Chretien getting the English language Library...... I dunno, Bush and library.......anyhow back to the non-existant draft for our lifetimes. Quote

sideshow Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. If you can read this message thank a teacher, If you are reading it in English of your own free will THANK A SOLDIER! It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag. To all the brave men and women who have dedicated or given their lives to protecting this country and it's freedoms Quote
M.Dancer Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 If you can read this message thank a teacher, If you are reading it in English of your own free will THANK A SOLDIER! Mind you, if you are a francophone, thank a teacher. For that matter, for all these wonderful things, in Canada, thank a lawyer, a trustee, a bailif, a judge, etc etc...... Soldiers aren't particularly concerned with domestic freedom, as their spear is pointed outwards and their domestic freedoms safegaurded by battalions of lawyers and concerned citizens. Michael Hardner Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. Yes, but the press gave us Beatle Bailey. Interesting paradox. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. And I think most of us agree that poets should be killed. If you can read this message thank a teacher, If you are reading it in English of your own free will THANK A SOLDIER! How do you NOT read something of your own free will ? And if you wrote this in English what other language could I read it in ??? Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner

Moxie Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 If I were in the Military I wouldn't want the draft brought back into being, if a Peacenik is drafted can you imagine having someone who holds the military in utter contempt watching your BACK in a fire fight. Save the soldiers the burden of shooting cowards in the back, history has thought us pacifist are lousy soldiers. They endanger the soldiers and the missions, however using them in support trades like Admin clerk or Cook would work. They get a fat paycheck to stay stateside but never have to put their lives on the line as per their pacifist ethos. Also Lund BC doesn't have anymore room at the dock for "House Boats", the berths are full from the last batch of rich draftdodgers. Moxie Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 I just saw on the News, Military cowards fleeing the US (people who signed up and joined the Military with free will but wanted a free education and nothing more.) can't hide in Canada anymore the Judge said send them back. A good day when cowards can't use Canada as a hiding place anymore, peaceniks none. Warmongers, licks finger, another victory against the cowards and basement dwellers. scribblet Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 I also wonder. Your elected body can pass whatever it wants, but it doesn't matter because your president will just Veto it.
