  1. One more, and this one has quite a bit of Oscar buzz already. Buzz this early is usually a death knell for movies, but this one is quite unusual. In fact, I have never seen a fiormat for a fictional story like it. The movie is called Boyhood. What is unique is that the director(Richard Linklater, who has an odd filmography of hits and flops, winners and complete turkeys) filmed it over 12 years. He picks up the story of the kid at age 6 and films him to age 18. It is long(nearly 3 hours) and has some flat spots, but overall he nails an often bittersweet, ragged childhood perfectly. There are half a dozen actors including Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette who are there the whole story, and several others who drift in and out as the story unfolds. I guess the story does not unfold so much as the man is created........ Good one.
  2. There are no treaties in the North. I'm really enjoyed your outrage and laboured humour. More please.
  3. Unfortunately neither of those services provide what our household watches: Current HBO/Showcase/AMC/Bravo/History/ National Geographic etc stuff to be recorded and watched commercial free, and live sports mostly on Canadian speciality sports watched live. I also have Netflix, but it does not have much in the way of current series programming and we watch so many movies in theaters their selection is too old and too mainstream for the most part. It looks like the CRTC will be favouring CBC if they unbundle some of the cable company offerings. CBC will likely be one of the few channels left in the basic mandatory package. Lucky thing for them too, if Canadian TV was truly a la carte they'd be toast. Little revenue from cable carriers goes hand in hand with little revenue from advertisers.
  4. These ships are both and jointly a National Historic Site. It's the only one in Canada that- until now- has had no physical location. The UK ceded ownership of the undicovered wrecks to the Canadian govt in the 90s.
  5. Nope, nothing of the sort. Why would the govt risk binding arbitration, when all along they have stuck to their guns and said the BCTF will get what the province can afford, not what the teachers want? The arbitrator has no such restriction, they can choose either position. At least some of the public understands there is a limit to their own money.
  6. NCC? National Capital Commission? Nature Conservancy of Canada? No Conflict Cooperation? Niagara Christian Community? I have No Clue Comrade.
  7. Say wha? No nerves pinched on me mate, I'm chiming in to support your pogrom! If I have to venture a diagnosis on you it wouldn't be pinched nerves, I would guess serious constipation.
  8. I am surprised every year how very few Canadians bother to visit the heart and soul of Canada, the place that makes it unique on the planet- the North of course. There are at least as many German tourists as Canuckistani visitors in the Yukon in the summer, or it seems that way. Whitehorse(population 28,000) has daily flights direct from Frankfurt in summer months!
  9. If so it would be the best kept secret in the history of our species. How many tens of thousands of people from all walks of life would have to be killed to keep a secret that big? After all, these are the same people who have failed to keep any secrets, witness the many foreign intelligence fiascos and of course the activities of Mr Snowden and Wikileaks. Yet they get entirely away with a whopper like 9-11.
  10. I don't think it is possible to accurately or consistently guage the 'mood of the country' in Canada. We have become a group of regions, each sefishly ready to screw anybody to get their way. Well, we nearly always have been that, but the disconnect is stronger now than ever. I credit the Quiet Revolution in Quebec with having a heavy influence on that evolution. Bitching has come to political threat and pressure, and .... it often works. Our bad.
  11. Didn't the city have a series of overtly NDP slates in the last 20 or so years, including Jack Layton, Ms Chow and cronies? So the current municipal NDP connection does not correlate to the provincial.federal scenes? I would have thought that of the three federal parties, the NDP were the most integrated and consistent in their platforms and message.
  12. It does look like she will get crushed on election day. I am unused to partisan politics at the municipal level, the sharp left-right divide but it seems that is the norm in Toronto. Do you think that her loss will carry through to federal politics, are the NDP about to get the same treatment next year? Or are they unrelated completely?
  13. looks a lot like a minority govt in 2015
  14. 5% probability sounds about right. The Russian national pride has taken a savage beating for nearly a quarter century, and Putin is seen domestically as setting that right.
  15. No, but that was not the question- which was about 'moral rights'. Nice try at moving the goalposts. Well actually it was not very well done.
  16. Yes Wally we know Harper is worse than Hitler. They found the ship pretty much by accident on this sixth Parks Canada expedition. They had planned to search another area, but sea ice forced them southeast so rather than do nothing they started looking where they ended up and 'bingo'!
  17. Albertans would vote overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in Canada. Of course. You'd better count on that in Quebec. Oh and OP: the poll choices should not be yes or no, OCH AYE and NAE would be more appropriate.
  18. I was commenting on this: "moral right to that much land for themselves:" If a First Nations has no moral right to their claim, I'm not sure what 'moral right' the Crown has to a far greater area. You still stuck on some bad treaties as some sort of persuasive case that the same circumstances applies to all treaty and non treaty situations? I hope not.
  19. They had a guy , some history prof , on CBC radio being interviewed on the significance of the find. The poor sad bastard spent the whole time complaining about Harper. Nobody really learned anything about the ship or expedition or anything else. On another station their talking head said that it did not make the search for the other ship any easier. The other ship(they are not sure yet which one they found today) was likely scuttled at its mooring, is likely not nearby and will probably be just as hard to find. Congrats to Parks Canada
  20. Putin must have a great giggle when he reads this kind of stuff.
  21. Sigh. These are the countries involved in the war Afghanistan. You're absolutely right though, AMERIKKKA was one of them. Bastards. 1 Afghanistan 2 Australia 3 Armenia 4 Azerbaijan 5 Bulgaria 6 Belgium 7 Bosnia and Herzegovina 8 Canada 9 China 10 Congo 11 Cyprus 12 Czech Republic 13 Denmark 14 Egypt 15 Estonia 16 France 17 Georgia 18 Germany 19 Greece 20 Hungary 21 India 22 Iran 23 Ireland 24 Italy 25 Japan 26 Kuwait 27 Kyrgyzstan 28 Latvia 29 Lithuania 30 Macedonia 31 Malaysia 32 Montenegro 33 Netherlands 34 New Zealand 35 Norway 36 Oman 37 Pakistan 38 Poland 39 Portugal 40 Qatar 41 Romania 42 Russia 43 Slovakia 44 Slovenia 45 South Korea 46 Spain 47 Sudan 48 Sweden 49 Switzerland 50 Tajikistan 51 Thailand 52 Turkey 53 Turkmenistan 54 United Arab Emirates 55 Ukraine 56 United Kingdom 57 United States 58 Uzbekistan
  22. wtf are you yapping about? Plenty of bands lease rights to commerce on land they control via treaty or land claim settlement. If its treaty land, they have to work through the Crown. If they have a settlement, they will have their own economic development staff. Duh. So you feel that Canada as The Crown has no moral right to the millions of acres they now control or 'own' outright? Interesting. Oh, and moral rights are superceded by Supreme Court decisions.
  23. Every teacher has a uni degree, they are a well educated lot. Perhaps the govt should ask this centre of excellence how to reduce the $60+ billion in debt the province carries. I'm sure they can find a way to dramatically increase payment to teachers while cutting costs elsewhere.
  24. That would be crazy. Abandoning a claim. Why not keep title and lease it out successively or jointly to various parties?
  25. Yes, he was one of those who supported a second class tier of domestic arrangements for some citizens in a startling new definition of 'equality'..
