  1. Wow, so many errors in just one paragraph. There is no economic point from the govt side to going to binding abitration. If you have already presented your best offer: the same as the other public sector unions got- there is zero reason to risk having an arbitrator telling you to 'meet in the middle'. "anti-union'? Didn't the govt just sign agreements with a whack of other unions? Oh, I see, a failure to roll over and play dead is anti-union? In fairness to the BCTF their bully tactics have worked every other time, so they must be terribly confused when it does not happen this time.
  2. +1 Applause to the politicians for, for once, doing their jobs.
  3. The Tories could have run Jesus Christ as their leader with Mother Teresa as campaign manager and they'd have still been destroyed in 1993. Actually, they were destroyed and never recovered.
  4. Chretien survived his oft and strenuously repeated campaign lie promising to repeal it..... I really think it was the cumulative weight of all the scandals of the previous ten years that did Mulroney in. Of course, who can forget Sheila Copps promising to resign if the Liberals did not repeal the GST? She did quit, kicking screaming and whining, and was re-elected in a byelection. It probably cost her her job as deputy PM.
  5. I was around and paying taxes, as always. Mulroney had an endless stream of scandals and they certainly hurt him, and deservedly so. His personal popularity was pretty close to single digit when he quit before the humiliation that came with the 1993 election. It is pretty hilarious to see Chretien do the same or worse and people think he was a great Prime Minister.
  6. Interesting that there is no mention at all of treaty obligations for mutual defence.
  7. Canadas empire only extends to a profound asskicking of Amerikka every four years on the ice. Other than that, our expectations aren't nearly as expansive as yours. These are the good old days for Fortress America. Enjoy them.
  8. If this happens- picking individual channels instead of the mandatory packages of channels now required on cable or satellite- the entire industry will be turned on its ear and the economic impact on the entire industry will be profound.
  9. Hmmm.... seems to me that early in the second term is when Presidents have the maximum opportunity to accomplish something, anything. It must be hard to watch your global empire slip slip away.
  10. Nah. The GST replaced the manufacturers tax, which was as goofy as it gets. What screwed him and all that followed was the relentless cronyism and corruption in the cabinet. Chretien was at least at bad but was a much more accomplished thief. On the plus side, Mulroney got er done with free trade, which brought a generation of prosperity to Ontari-ario and further.
  11. That sector is like the chair on the deck you reserve for the loud and drunk neighbour who likes to come over and rant about the 'coloureds' and 'creeping communism'. You wouldn't let him in the house but... We're just being polite.
  12. Chuck Guite lives in Duffys basement suite......
  13. Y'all worry too much. God has provided for the first 6000 years of the planets existence and His experiment is not over.
  14. Revisionist at best, since Chretien himself prided himself on doing as little as possible. Except stealing money from the provinces of course, then pretending he had slain the deficit. Looks like he thoroughly sucked in at least one taxpayer. Have you forgiven him for also stealing $200 million of our money to reward Liberal friendly ad agencies, or are ya sticking with the Rogue Bureaucrat Chuck Guite story line?
  15. From a purely mathematical viewpoint Mulroney was the guy responsible for taking the Conservatives from a 151 seat majority to 2 seats. 2 seats. It is arguable that Harper took the Progressive out of PC, but it is indisputable that Mulroney took his Party out of the House of Commons.
  16. Yeah right, because the Japanese Imperial Army treated all the locals so well last time they had a shot at world domination.
  17. In an interview recently he said he doesn't really give a shit about golf but.... he really misses being outside, he just does not spend much time outside as President becuase he has an intense schedule, and its dangerous outside. Playing golf lets him walk outside for a few hours, the only time in his life that he can.
  18. Here's hoping indeed, but Melke is 30 and has an opportunity right now to earn some lifetime money on a monster contract. He has been good enough that he can expect at least five years for at least $13-$14 million per. The Jays will have to match that, assuming Melke is not intent on playing for a contender because the Jays don't look like one now next year with or without him. Yes I know Bautista is signed for next year. When AA signed him four years ago, it was a fat and risky (to the Jays) deal. Obviously he is a very very good player. Average fielder, excellent arm, good baserunner , terrific bat for power, average and on base percentage- and a team leader. He is signed for $14M per year through 2015, with a team option at another $14 for 2016. But.... he is 33 now, and his next deal after 2016 will be when he is 35/36, and very few get monster money. Does he demand a trade now, knowing it may well come with another 3 -4years at even more money? Or does he hope he is still an elite player when he is that old and can still get big bucks. Nope, I think AA either has to extend now or trade him very soon. or his value starts to drop drop drop. If he still wants to play for a medicocre team, I'd defintiely keep him.
  19. Yeah, I recall going to Toronto just before Ford and traffic was never a problem.
  20. Let's hope you are right, they are going to need vastly improved pitching if their offence is gutted with the losses of Cabrera and Bautista.
  21. Stockwell Day is a candidate? Really, I don't give a shit but it is vastly entertaining to watch Toronto folks fret themselves into apoplexy. World class!!!
  22. If Ford wins he'll have a running start because the media will all have died from brain seizures and won't slow him down like last time.
  23. please stop mentioning inconvenient truths about Liberal fiscal management
  24. How many young players that never play college football are in the NFL?
  25. If class sizes are strictly limited, their will certainly be many more teaching positions created overnight, particularly since there only seems to be talk of maximum sizes of classes. To be fair, perhaps a compromise could be reached that includes minimum sizes of classes and shares the burden for paying for teacher adjustments. Keep in mind that fluctuations in school enrollments are constant at many schools- industries come and go, demographics change and sometimes dramatically. Lets say sizes were limited to a maximum of 25 and a minimum of 20. Whenever the school average exceeds 25, hire a teacher. Whenever the average for the school drops below 20, fire a teacher. Fired teachers get first crack at new positions. The BCTF can pay half the separation benefits. Teachers would of course have to move to take the new jobs but we all know this is for the benefit of the kids so there should be no problem there.
