Time To Fight Anti-Union Leislation
overthere replied to socialist's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That may not be a good example. Japan buys some milled lumber from Canada. Japn is a country like Canada in that most homes are wood frame. They also buy raw logs for a special purpose, and that are larger or better quality than what is available locally. Traditional Japanese post and beam structures(including Shinto temples) are still built using traditional precision handcrafted wood. They don't want milled lumber or precut beams, they do it themselves using hand tools on site c/w some amazing joinery. Maybe that is what was on the barge. -
Giant Affront to Freedom of Religion in Canada
overthere replied to -1=e^ipi's topic in Religion & Politics
The discussion of this topic makes organized religions very nervous. Many have enjoyed tax free status for capital assets for centuries, operate businesses with tax impunity/immunity. have protected constitutional status and generally enjoy wide corporate privilege not available to individuals or business. They don't want close examination or any societal challenge to that privilege. Can't say I blame them, religion has an extraordinary status in Canada. -
Sure , CRA will have some staff chasing the rich or corporate with offshore stuff. But there is not much reward there relative to hammering the groups I mentioned, and it is much easier. Not so many rich people are dumb enough to risk jail terms to evade(not avoid) taxes. There are so many ways to legally avoid tax altogether. A very popular one is to stop being a legal resident of Canada, and become a legal resident of a country that has a tax treaty with Canada and have much lower taxes. Mexico and Costa Rica are two examples.

Toronto Municipal Election Thread 2014
overthere replied to Black Dog's topic in Local Politics in Canada
is there an actual end to this election campaign. any hope of a vote soon or is this like a long running gag? -
Perhaps the meme that if only the CPC can get Trudeau taking a position on something, anything.....

What people are those that are avoiding taxes altogether? The main targets of CRA are the self employed and small to medium business. Poor/low income people don't pay taxes. Wage and salary earners have few deductions available and few tax dodges and most have already had a bit too much tax deducted at source. Big businesses have better lawyers and accountants than CRA, it is hard, expensive and time consuming to try and defeat them. That leaves,,,, what I said.

No, wearing a colander is a gentle way of reminding us what matters in our pluralistic, egalitarian society. No heads were sawn off in his making that point. I hope it doesn't ruin the surprise, but I'm going to pass the hat around here this fall and get you a sense of humour for Christmas an upcoming holdiday season. -
CRA does not need to audit everybody, they know they can get plenty of income with simply sending a letter threatening to audit. I know this for a fact. It is very effective, and in this case it would be extremely easy to contact every participant..

Every penny is transparent to the IRS or CRA. In the past both have gone hard after 'grey market' money, and Uber drivers will be far easier prey than say, organized barter schemes..

That does not explain the involvement of the US or Canada, neither of which cares about oil coming from Iraq or Syria. It also does not speak to the involvement of all the neighbours, who are awash in oil.

2022 Winter Olympics: Is this the end of the IOC?
overthere replied to Boges's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
Kudos to the Norwegians for publishing the list of goofy crap expected of the host. It would not deter China or Kazakhstan, neither place would be much bothered by a little official graft. It might default to China since Kazakh has been run for 23 years by its first and only president, who is getting old. When he dies, so might the olympics bid. -
Postmedia buying SUN Newspapers
overthere replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Business and Economy
The Sun is much more conservative than the Postmedia paper around here. -
The drivers are not employees, and Uber will be uber-careful to avoid any semblance of an employer-employee relationship. So there will not be T4s. But they will most certainly keep detailed records of revenues and expenses, and every driver will have their SIN number and/or GST number on tap for CRA to peruse. I cannot imagine CRA would ignore all those drivers. I wonder too how those drivers will reconcile expenses with CRA, since most drivers are casual, CRA may not recognize all the expenses they'll undoubtedly try to claim.

Should Canada have a NATIONAL Drug Plan?
overthere replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Then I suggest you spread the love just a little bit and demonstrate some compassion beyond your personal life. Every pharmacy in Canada will stop sending drugs when the prescription ends. Or are you saying a prescription written to a First Nations patient has no limit, that they can renew for the remainder of their life without any physician consent? -
Time To Fight Anti-Union Leislation

There is little to discuss about private sector unions. Labour is a component of making any widget or service. If it proves unprofitable, or provides a low return on investment to do it with union labour here, the company involved either folds or moves somewhere that their business is profitable. Pretty simple. Some unions have an awareness of reality , some do not. Say goodbye to those that do not, and say goodbye to those industries while you are at it. Public sector unions are different, since a) government management skills are brutal the public is often unaware that they are so poorly served by both management and union and c) there is limited opportunity to outsource govt functions to improve service/reduce cost.. Actually there are many opportunities, but it is extremely rare to find govt mgmt and politicans with sufficient courage to act. -

I'm with you 100% start a fundraiser and I'll donate at least a penne. -
What I meant is that they operate as a vehicle-for-hire and effectively are no different than any other taxi or limo service, both of which are pretty tightly regulated here. The airport rules don't apply beyond the airport. Really the only reason they have airport rules is to generate revenue for the airport authority. They have started to adverise for drivers in Edmonton. Two Classes of Uber drivers are sought- one class is for people with taxi/limo licenses already and another class of ordinary people who want extra money.

What was the last movie you watched?
overthere replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Arts and Culture
I'd forgotten. I'll take your second comment as a recommendation. I do read some of the Postmedia reviews. Unfortunately the best of their reviewers -Jay Stone- retired recently. Their main reviewer now is contrarian for me, if she loved something I am likely to feel the opposite. It's not a science. I see so many flicks in theaters that it has built a steady mental rolodex of actors and directors I watch for, others I avoid. If I don't know anything about any of them and the story sounds interesting, I just go and learn. In the last few years I have come to avoid nearly all the franchise movies. -
Should Canada have a NATIONAL Drug Plan?
overthere replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
and I was pointing out the same constitution you referring to has health care for the great masses as a provincial responsibility . So are drugs. Nothing prevents any province from listing or delisting services, including drugs. While you're rereading the document, see if you can find a reference other than your anecdote to back up How do you know? Are you a First Nations pharmaceutical statistician? Your posts about First Nations have more than a whiff of nastiness about them, and this is yet another. White people sell their prescription drugs too, got numbers on those for comparison? A chronic problem in the general population is not taking their presricptions as directed, so lets have your non-anecdotal comparison of that too. And you can wrap it up with some commentary on how a lay person of any race or colour can go about cancelling a prescription at whim. Issuing , changing or cancelling prescriptions is something only doctors or sometimes pharmacists can do in some provinces. -
NB Election Results and Why FPTP is Outdated
overthere replied to cybercoma's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
For your laughable claim that "Not every party is as ridiculous, spiteful, and unprofessional as the Harper Conservatives." Dd somebody hijack your account for that post? C'mon back it up and name the party. You can just invent one if you cannot name a real one. -
What was the last movie you watched?
overthere replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Arts and Culture
No. Is it worth $12 and two hours? I'll watch anything, any genre in a theater if they meet those two metrics. A couple small things I really liked were the lighting/music, and the way that everybody just looked like ordinary people with minimal makeup and bad hair. Oh and of course the fine acting and writing. -
Everybody is dumping the hard men in the league.

No, Wall is more popular and I say again: SK will not want to change anything next federal election and risk what has been so very long in coming: jobs and general prosperity

Should Canada have a NATIONAL Drug Plan?

I have close family in France, and as I recall they pay about 15 Euros or so to their family physicians each visit. It is not onerous, but enough that you don't use the system casually or as a hobby, as happens here.
