  1. It's a sign of the Bank of Canada raising interest rates. The Bank of Canada can't have zero interest rates forever.
  2. There are always random fluctuations in the economy. Even with a bad government you will have a month with good growth and with a good government you will have a month with bad growth. Also, it might make more sense to look at relative output rather than the growth rate since the growth rates of countries will tend to converge (a country can't have a lower growth rate indefinitely, eventually the catch-up effect becomes too large). Also, if you want to do proper growth or output attribution, you want to take other factors into account (such as interest rates, oil prices & provincial governments). Pakistan has a higher rate of growth than Canada. However, that doesn't mean that the people in charge of Pakistan are better at managing the economy than the people that run Canada.
  3. RIP Maryam Mirzakhani, winner of the Fields Medal. Sad to see a great mathematician die so young.

    1. Wilber

      Wilber

      Yes, it is sad.

  4. According to Australia's Prime Minister, "Well the laws of Australia prevail in Australia, I can assure you of that. The laws of mathematics are very commendable, but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia". So he stupidly wants to destroy public key cryptography?

  5. Al Queda and ISIS want world domination. Furthermore, they think that their world domination is prophecised in the Quran. At best you can get a temporary truce with them.
  6. Engage radical islam in the market place of ideas. Currently we do not allow ISIS, Al Queda to participate in the free market place of ideas, so their narratives cannot get challenged and defeated. Instead, ISIS and other groups use this to justify their 'we're oppressed' narrative, which helps them get more followers. Also, sanction Saudi Arabia like we did with South Africa. Plus, stop giving aid money to countries that kill gay people.
  7. Lol, wtf? It's about time? So you reject equality between men and women? Ahh, yes, the time of male privilege. Look at all these privileged white males in the image below during the height of patriarchy (WW1)! To the point where men are assaulted and murdered at 3 times the rate? To the point that men make up 90% of homeless people? To the point where men have 4 times the suicide rate? And here I thought this thread was about Canada.
  8. The Indian Act, reserve system, employment equity, section 15b of the charter, and availability of university scholarships seems to disagree with this claim. Equal rights? Equal respect? Currently it is illegal to mutilate the genitals of infant females without consent, but completely legal to mutilate the genitals of male infants without consent (i.e. circumcision). No distinction between consent to have sex and consent to be a parent legally exists for men, but it does for women. Society should have parental surrender rights for men and women as advocated by the youth wing of the Swedish Liberal Party. Currently, if a man gets raped by a women and the women gets pregnant, the man may be forced to pay child support to his rapist for 2 decades. We have the sexist Duluth model to deal with domestic violence disputes. The sexist court system significantly favours women over men for child custody cases, and men generally serve 62% longer sentences for the same crime even after controlling for the other factors. https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2144002 Despite the fact that women make up 60%+ of university students and the fact that girls are performing better than boys, there are more programs and scholarships to help women/girls excel academically compared to men/boys. Society gives female-oriented cancer research, such as breast cancer research, many times more funding than male-oriented cancer research, such as prostate cancer, even when you account for differences in deaths. Admittedly, some non-gender-specific cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, have even less funding. Men experience roughly 3 times the rates of violent crimes (murders, assaults, etc.) as women, yet all of the focus of 'gendered violence' by the Canadian government is on women. How is that equal respect? Despite the fact that men make up roughly half of domestic violence victims, there are basically zero domestic violence shelters for men. Equal respect? Despite the fact that 90% of homeless people are men, there are more homeless shelters for women. Equal respect? Indigenous men are murdered at 3 times the rate as indigenous women. Yet out of all 338 MPs, Conservative, Liberal, NDP, Green and Bloc, none of them see any issue with the sexist double standard by having an inquiry for missing and murdered indigenous women but none for men. Is the value of an indigenous man worth less than a third the value of an indigenous woman? The truth is that male lives don't matter as much as female lives within our society.
  9. Jacee, who gave the unelected foreign monarchs and hereditary chiefs the right to impose racist laws that should apply hundreds of years long after they are dead? Answer: No one. Abolish the indian act, reserve system & monarchy and create a republic instead.
  10. Ahh Canada, Does not have freedom of speech (section 2 of the charter is countered by sections 1 and 33 of the charter) Is not secular (anglican monarch, god/cross in national anthems, god in preamble of charter, catholic school boards) No equality under the law (section 15 of the charter is countered by sections 15b, 1 and 33 of the charter, plus you have monarchy, indian act & reserve system) No interprovincial free trade despite it supposedly being one of the main purposes of confederation 150 years ago Far from #1 in HDI, Life Expenctancy, GDP per capita and Health Care rankings. Many First Nations do not have clean drinking water Canada has lots of debt, Ontario has the largest debt of any subnational entity, provinces keep getting credit downgrades Youth unemployment and underemployment is a major issue I could go on. But by all means, think it's a good idea to spend 1 billion dollars of public money on a giant nationalistic party when that money could go to better uses.
  11. HDI rankings: 1. Norway 2. Australia 11. Canada Life Expectancy: 1. Monaco 2. Japan 18. Canada real GDP per capita (PPP): 1. Qatar 2. Luxembourg 24. Canada WHO Health Care Rankings: 1. France 2. Italy 30. Canada By what standard is Canada the best country in the world? This is nationalistic nonsense. You go to basically any country and you have nationalists claiming their country is the best. But the reality is usually quite different.
  12. Depends on the labour law.
  13. If people want a contract with paid holidays, I'm not against it, though I think it pointlessly complicates things. Working 50 weeks earning $520 per week and having 2 weeks of unpaid vacation is the same as working 50 weeks earning $500 per week and having 2 weeks of paid vacation. As for the government forcing people to take certain days off and/or giving preference to certain days such as Christmas, Easter, New Years, Canada Day, etc. I am opposed to that. And that money used to pay for that dinner / drinks / fireworks etc. means they have less money to spend at other times of the year. It's not creating more consumption, it's just changing the timing of consumption. A society, in the long term, consumes what it produces, you can't get around that.
  14. Lol, paid holiday. Where do you think the money comes from to pay for that holiday? Your own paycheck. In the long run, a society only produces what it consumes. So we are celebrating forcing people to take a Holiday even if they don't want to (and would prefer to work for more money)? Decreasing people's choices reduces their expected utility. That's not something to celebrate. Also, wasting money on fireworks that could go to paying of debt, reducing taxes, expanding healthcare or giving first nations drinking water is not something that should be celebrated.
  15. Why celebrate a country that doesn't even give its people constitutionally protected freedom of speech? The less people that celebrate Canada day, especially given that the government has decided to waste 1 billion dollars on a giant party, the better. Also, it's nice to see more people pointing out the sexist double standard where there is no inquiry for missing & murdered indigenous men despite indigenous men being murdered at 3 times the rate as indigenous women.
  16. The term 'islamophobia' was created as a political term by the Muslim Brotherhood and has been used to justify killings of blasphemers in countries like Pakistan. See #KillAyazNizami.
  17. To be fair, that guy was an NDP supporter who admired Jack Layton.
  18. Men tend to have a smaller surface area : volume ratio and more body hair. This means that men tend to be better at dealing with colder temperatures and women better at dealing with warmer temperatures. The idea that global warming disproportionately harms women is nonsense; the opposite is true. Yet to people like McKenna truth doesn't matter. The claim that climate change 'disproportionately harms women' fits nicely into the eco-justice narrative, so it must be true!
  19. I see lots of people make claims like this, but they rarely back it up. Do you have some sort of peer reviewed academic study that demonstrates that such migration patterns will be this big of a problem. Because if you look at the world's best integrated assesssment models, the gap between rich countries and poor countries will narrow over the next 100 years despite climate change. If such a gap narrows, why would there be more mass migration than what we observe today?
  20. Military people always say they want more money for the military. That's what they do. The 2% GDP target is an unjustified political target with no basis. If you want to demonstrate that spending 2% of GDP pasts cost-benefit analysis and get that published in a peer review economic journal, then maybe I'd reconsider my position.
  21. Some of that $2.65 billion will go to countries that kill gay people or apostates. I say cut all aid to countries that kill gay people. If they want our money they should stop killing gay people.
  22. Awful decision by our government to waste more money on military for no good reason other than to appease Donald Trump. Sad that all 3 major parties 'agree'. This is what is awful about the first past the post system, it results in very little political diversity on parliament hill. I say, have a referendum on if the Canadian people really want to waste 2% of our GDP on military.
  23. Canada spends too much money on military already.

  24. Do you think this has anything to do with Trump's sudden reversal on Saudi Arabia?
