The best safety provision they could possibly make would be be have the drivers seat bolted to the front of the bumper and completely unprotected except from the wind. There would be zero accidents.

Toronto expects $140M surplus for 2011
fellowtraveller replied to mentalfloss's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Taxes like this, and the Ontario provincial tax on the same transaction are ridiculous, just a bleed on those that have no option.. Neither city or province add anything of value to the transaction. By contrast in Edmonton or Calgary, the province charges a minimum of $65 and up to around $250-$300 total for a residential real estate transaction. the price depend on complexity. The purpose of the fee is to provide funds to operate and maintain the simple and cost effective Land Titles system. A guaranteed title search costs $10. There are no municipal taxes or fees on land transactions in Edmonton or Calagary. -

CBC's attack on Scouts Canada

It is a grotesque insult to the Scouts to compare isolated incidents of pedophilia and their reaction to same to the systemic evil within the Catholic Church. -
Oh-oh, turns out that Guiness has declined to certify the accomplishment of the 100 year old marathoner because he cannot prove his age. His passport states that he was born in 1911, but apparently he has no birth record in India. WQithout one. no official acknowledgement.......

Mayor Ford calls 911 on CBC comedians
fellowtraveller replied to Shwa's topic in Local Politics in Canada
The thing that just shines through here is the malice of the OP. I doubt that Mary Walsh realized how wrong it is to accost people at their private residence, with their families present. They have plenty of time to do their schtick in public venues, guys like Ford are easily jumped every day in public places. It is less obvious why the OP and his/her subsequent posts are filled with such bitterness and hatred. -

They are wrong of course. As long as I pay my cable bill, or the network continues to provide the content at no charge for on-air material. I have the right to view and record(for personal use only). If I choose not to watch any programs or commercials, that is also my right. In the case of cable, it is bought and paid for monthly. -
CBC leads 'get the facts' attack on Quebecor
fellowtraveller replied to mentalfloss's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The CBC is defensive and on the run. It is a start. Great, that will make it easy then for our brothers and sisters in French Canada to dig deep in their own pockets for once and support that which they love- directly and generously. -
Canada's first all electric car
fellowtraveller replied to Topaz's topic in Health, Science and Technology
Yep. Witness Shell moving bigtime into LNG production and all other aspects of global natural gas recently.I wonder if the Leaf runs better or worse on power prodcued at coal plants? It is also not necessary. A 160 km range before charging is pretty good, certainly enough for most people who live in city or suburbia. I guess you could rent a gasoline car for long trips. -
Hertz fires Muslim drivers for praying on company time
fellowtraveller replied to Shwa's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well, for one thing they are shuttle drivers. Their work schedules are defined by what their customers- Hertz passengers- need, and not what their personal schedule requires. This is not uncommon in service industries, now is it?And I will point out again that this Star article is not the whole story, there is more to it. The employer provides the same break times to all, and requires that all staff clock out now. The reason they do this is that some employees are taking more and unscheduled breaks, and guess who they are. And yes, employers do have the right to somewhat control what their staff do on paid breaks, but Hertz has no objection to people praying. All they want is that ALL staff clock in and out. Some have been complying all along. It is not an unreasonable request. -

Untrue. If you are a Jew or Muslim working at BillyBobs BBQ Bonanaza you are exp[ected to serve those pork ribs cheerfully or they will find soembody who does. Same with working on your Sabbath, if it is a normal part of the work week and you are assigned- you work or buh-bye. -
Honour Killing Trial kicks off.

It is one of the saddest stories imaginable, and the two men and one woman who murdered these children would do it again if given the chance. The depth of their ignorance is frightening. -
I would like to see a protest against .....
fellowtraveller replied to a topic in Canada / United States Relations
As stated, there is no reason for the state to support those who do not actually require support. There is an obliagtion for the state to support those who cannot overcome their circumstances. Interesting that you'd mention the Depression, as the children of that era are the ones least likely to be looking for a handout, and most willing to give a hand up. If you actually believe that there are no lazy people looking for handouts from the state, I'll bet there is a "UIC Ski Team" tshirt in your closet somewhere. -
Hertz fires Muslim drivers for praying on company time
fellowtraveller replied to Shwa's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This story has been brewing for some time, and The Star has the short version. Hertz has no problem with employees praying on their paid breaks or on unpaid breaks such as lunch, but since Muslims pray up to five times per day certain employees were taking adbvantage and stopping for extra breaks. They argued that they had a right to express their religion, and Hertz had little quarrel with that either but did not permit it as paid leave. By insisting that all staff- all staff not just Muslims and not just for prayer- clock out for their breaks, the employer could manage their time and pay as they have every right to do. These staff refused to clock out for breaks, so they have been fired. As long as all employees are treated the same, there is no discrimination. -

Yet when the policy was implemented, there certainly was no labour shortage in Alberta. You assume that some people are not just 'lazy and don't want to work'. There are without any doubt people who are just that, and a policy of 'if you are single and employable, you get nothing' sorts them out immediately. I know that the dream job sometimes is not avail;\able, but I suggest that encouraging people strongly to accept lesser jobs is preferable to paying them to do 'f**k all. I have no issue at all with helping out those that actually do need help, and there are many in our society. -

that is an awful lot of questions, and only some related to welfare fraud, but I'll have a crack at it. Around 1995 the provincvial govt in AB implemented some simple new rules for qualification for welfare. Basically they said that if you are employable, and have no dependents, you get nothing on an ongoing basis. That means that iof you are employable and do have dependents, you can qualify but they also have tried fairly hard to train those folks into places where they can get jobs and support themselves. But basically if you are single and not diabled, you're on your own. The result was that the welfare rolls went from around 100k to less than half that, quickly. It also cut the careers of many social workers short. The changes cut a lot of fraud out as there were fewer cases per worker and the rules were clear. If you are able, you work. Luckily this was accompanied by plenty of work available, though some of did involve sweat and low wages. If you are single and employabvle and really down on your luck, you can get very short term help and you can also hit the shelters. People with long term disabilities are on a different scheme and by all accounts do not live particularly well in most cases. -
Flat tax idea in USA primaries

Of course, with the progressive taxation system the money not paid by low earners is paid for already with higher earners -
Flat tax idea in USA primaries
fellowtraveller replied to blueblood's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Correct. That is why taxes are kicked back to low income earners. At $22k gross income, you'd pay nothing in AB tax. At $22k taxable income I'm not sure, but it would likely be very little if anything. Your kids would still get to attend school, you can still go to the doctor and you would be permitted to walk on the sidewalk. -
Long-gun registry to be shot down Thursday
fellowtraveller replied to a topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I'm quite sure of it. Many, make that very many, other wise law abiding Canadians simply ignored the long gun registry, and they will greet the repeal of the registry legislation with the same response they met the introduction: they'll ignore it.It was an ongoing problem for regulators and cops:how do you enforce a law that is widely ignored by ordinary people? In this case, ignored by both ordinary peope and criminals. -

as bambino notes, Harper has not set a precedent. In fact, he has not given Ontario nearly enough seats for it to maintain "the proportionate Representation of the Provinces prescribed by this Act "

A more important reason is to greatly increase Canadian visibility and capability in Arctic regions, or the many claimants to the resources in what we consider our terrotory may decide to take it away.

'Smart' is not the right word when you hit the 30 minute mark..... First they have the inane movie gossip, interspersedwith many outright ads. Often they are expensively produced and witless ads. They really shpould take a cue from the Euros, who often prodcue entertaining or funny adss. Next, more ads plus previews of several upcoming movies which in Canada are generally all movies of the same genre as the one you are about to see. Next, PSAa interspersed with more ads. Finally and mercifully, a movie. AMC differs in two ways in movie previews, first is the extreme length. Second is that they tend to show previews of their own upcoming stuff, of any genre. Nobody shows shorts anymore.
