Gap between rich and poor rising faster in Canada
fellowtraveller replied to Rick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Ah yes, a return to the notion that anybody with money is a criminal. -
So what? Every other entertainment provider/media outlet on the planet relates to their viewers. In fact. every private sector outlet does it better because they have accountability for what they do that is not required of a publicly funded broadcaster. CTV, as just one of many examples, cannot bluster behind the fatuous and pompous baloney of 'national institution'. Nobdoy pays them for anything but meeting the needs of their constiuents, paying constituents at that. What specifically does CBC do that makes it worth $1 billion per annum in taxpayer dollars? In reality, the only substantive difference between these two entertainment/information sources is the source of their funding.

Oh I see. They had no choice, none at all. It was impossible to do anything else that might somehow connect the Jets with a jet. -

Yes, I already knew that your home province insists on getting more than its share of the wealth of Canada. But speaking of hockey, let me compliment your Jets on the rollout of the new jerseys. I especially liked the marketing coup of having four Jetsplayers dressed in their snazzy new Jets gear, while emerging from a Canadian Forces Hercules(propeller driven) aircraft. Was it a local ad agency that came up with that winner? -

Hey. let's redistribute the wealth before it is earned....that will be a great incentive... -

yet both Canada and the US have home ownership rates of around 68%, which means many working class people do own homes. -

The French Revolution featured the execution of much of the ruling class by chopping off their heads. Can we at least agree a first step in Canafda to getting rid of the rich will require we bring back the death penalty? Thank goodness for computers. Instead of having a mob encircle the mansions we can just have Canada Revenue Agency filter the tax returns and send them a Notice Of Execution. My friend the union millwright made about $150 k last year, is he up for the chop too? -

Wealthy people are all criminals and thieves then? Maybe we should just kill them all and sell their BMWs to people and give the money to the poor and then kill the fascists who bought the BMWs andf give that money to the poor too. -
Canadian Human Rights Commission
fellowtraveller replied to Speedy von Vloppen's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Wow, you are missing the point entirely if you think crimninal offences belong in front of any quasi human rights tribunal or commission. Any Candian accused of any criminal opffence should have an absolute right to due process, and that just does not happen in the HR commissions. If they are charged with crimninal offences, they should be in a court, a real court where they are presumed innocence and have the full range of services available. -

I see. You selected Steyn because he is white and can afford to pay to prove himself innocent. If he was not middle class, he could not mount a defence because the various commissions and tribunals do not allow for any type of legal aid. He is a winmner in your example because he has money, not because he was not guilty. -
What is Fair User-Based Internet Billing?
fellowtraveller replied to shelphs's topic in Media and Broadcasting
Right, tell Wind and other startups that there is fair competition in the marketplace. They are obliged to fight for everything in front of the CRTC, while their 'competitors ' enjoy their domination of consumers. If we have an open market, why are our cell and Internet rates some of the highest in the world? -

Narrow the mandate of the tribunal to exclude anyhting to do with hate crimes. Legislation already exists in the Criminal Code regarding hate crimes. Require the same rules of procedure and evidence required in other courts, or greatly restrict the Courts scope if they are unwilling to do that. Then why would you use Steyn as an example, knowing that what was required of him as a defendant was so less onerous than what was required of the complainant? -
Corporate tax cuts/breaks don't create jobs!
fellowtraveller replied to CPCFTW's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Transalation: work that has a market value of $8.50 per hour got performed for $8.50 per hour. The govt of Alberta used to pay thousands of staff to sell beer and wine at $22/hour plus benefits in govt owned buildings. Now it is performed by private sector cashiers and shelf-stockers for what the work is worth: minimum wage. benefit: me and every other taxpayer. -

I'm not so sure that the clock is not rolling back in Europe. The EU was in part created and expanded to create captive markets for high tech goods manufactured by more developed member nations. In return , those less developed nations received the fat social contract they desired as EU members. To maintain that tremendously expensive social contract will take closing the borders further, much further to trade outside Europe. I think we are going to see that increasingly and soon, their options are limited. But first, the real deadbeats like Greece must be purged. -

I don't know if you can be classified as a winner if you are obliged to pay thousands of dollars in legal costs and take many days of your time to defend yourself agsinst frivolous charges, without choice, recourse or payment. Much better to be the 'loser' in this case, where the CHRC itself pays for legal advice and invests the time of paid staff on your complaint. -

You forgot about mandatory Jesus lessons and eating puppies for dinner. -
I'll take the words of the man who masterminded the whole episode, as quoted and direct from his mouth. Consider also that the primary target was initially not a pub in Kuta at all, but US oil installations nearby. They were abandoned as targets because they had reasonable security, and the bars that were flattened had none. Consider also that the US consuklate was attacked at the same time, with little effect. Consider also that the Australian press, like yours and mine, focuses on their interests and presents nearly every story from their parochial and narrow nationalist angle. The Aussies are particulary good at it, and Bali is their playground. Americans were the primary target. Not Australians and all the other nationalities that died. There were other inmportant targets in Bali, and those were devastated. First was the economy of Bali, which was doing much, much better than the rest of Indonesia. Note that Bali is a Hindu enclave of 3 million in a sea of Muslims, about 200 million. Resntment runs high in Djkarta over this, there is a strong level of jealousy. The Bali economy was crushed by this event. Note also that their was a cultural/religious element, where the rich/successful hindus were slapped down by their Islamic masters. So cultural/religious/weconomic forces were important too. It was the ideal target in the end.

What is Fair User-Based Internet Billing?
fellowtraveller replied to shelphs's topic in Media and Broadcasting
Why? Because last time I checked a reasonable price is what people are prepared to pay in an open and fair marketplace. Until then, putting a meter on your monitor will play right into the hands of the few ISPs in Canada and their pals at the CRTC that together ensure Canadians that pay far too much for Internet service, just as we pay far too much for cable TV, land lines and cellphone service. -
Wow. If you ever get in legal trouble, do not act as your own counsel. Treaties are contracts, albeit special contracts. Courts interpret and rukle on the legality of contracts, they don't write them or rewrite them. The Supreme Court does NOT make law, and their rulings do not create law. Show me an Act, any Act, with the notation that it was amended by anything other than Parliament. They can and do indicate to the govt that a law contravenes the Charter or Constitution, but that does not make new legislation. We are utterly screwed if 9 unelected people ever have those kinds of powers.
-
Once again, you are confused about the role of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court does not have supremity over the Canadian Government. It does have supremacy over subordinate, lesser courts. No court exists to create law, only interpret law which is made by a legislative body, like Parliament. When an activist court takes it on itself to create law, time for a smackdown.

What is fair or not fair is irrelevant since we will never see fair as long as companies are protected from competition. All this crap about bandwidth is just fluff, a cover for the real issue which is Rogers etc protecting themselves from the threat of companies like Netflix. And they have the active connivance of the CRTC on their side, how very convenient. -
Yep, it is very hard to quantify the value of increased security except in its abscence, when it gets much easier. It is like insurance, who needs it? I see the security of citizens- all aspects- as the number one priority of the government, no other contenders. And overall, I do feel safe in Canada. I wonder if those who do not have any perspective, have they travelled or lived elsewhere where personal safety is not assumed?

Thaat is great news about Copps if you don't support the Liberals. My first memory about Copps is her participation in a telivised debate about the Charlottetown Accord. Sharon Carstairs was there, a professor from Quebec and somebody from the Tories, cannot remember who that was. Anyways, 'particpation' is too strong..... Carstairs was a clever person, the two guys were OK, but Copps..... It wasn't that I disagreed with her views, but it was evident early that she had no grasp at all of the issues, none. She came across as shrill and not very smart. Carstairs tried a couple of times to rescue her from embarassing herself, but there was no stopping her. Nothing she had said or done since has changed that impression.

The Most Disturbing Film Ever Made
fellowtraveller replied to bloodyminded's topic in Arts and Culture
Agreed, but von Trier is not involved with any of those. He needs to learn how to do it effectively, perhaps he could watch Hitchcock or Robert Altman for some tips on how to do it. And I was not referring to a sequence in the movie, but the opening credits where Lars tells us he did everything. I don't pay to watch men wank. no and yes. I've also seen the notably average Russian Ark, shot in one continuous take. You're not making a very convincing case, Lost Highway is 14 years old and far from Lynchs' best. I truly wonder how Lynch gets funding for his work any more, he has had a long series of duds. I guess the video rentals of Mulholland Drive , rented to the lovers of hot lesbian sex are buying his groceries these days.
