Who is/was more divisive: Harper or Trudeau?

Canada’s prostitution laws unconstitutional, court rules
RNG replied to Shwa's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Playing devil's advocate here, one could argue that they are both government interference into the free choice of individuals. If I am stupid enough to borrow money at 50% a day, I deserve whatever happens to me. If I choose to pay for getting an STD, same thing. -
Something that many news stories have reference but I'm not sure of the significance is that Il's 64 YO sister was also promoted to the same rank of general as Un. The generals may have the power, but two biggies are family now.

$9 Billion No-Bid Contract for 65 F-35s
RNG replied to nicky10013's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
How much did the Liberal's canceling of the helicopter contract end up costing us, including the eventual purchase they were forced into because the existing ones were falling out of the sky? I can see a debate on whether we need fighters at all, though I think we do. But this choice is gold. -
Canada’s prostitution laws unconstitutional, court rules

From the reactions of news sources I visit, it appears to be a real mixed bag. About the best thing I have seen is a suggestion that any tax revenue collected on this new industry be used to treat hooker's addictions. But all governments, I am sure will just add it to general revenue and continue wasting it. -
It's pretty clear that Kim Jong Un is coming to power. An article by the AP on the CTV news website claims various "experts" on N Korea don't expect any changes at all after the transition. Full story: http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/World/20100929/north-korea-son-100929/

A BBC news website Banner says that he is considering appealing. But I also remember from the original story that he is 74 years old. Don't know about the appeal thing, he might be risking a fatal accident. I spent 6 weeks in a small city in northern Russia in 2002, Uhkta. It was so exciting then. The people, with the exception of a few older folks and some ne'er-do-well types just loved all the changes. They didn't have the toys and the wealth that we do but for about 5 or so years, each year was way better for them and the prospects were for this to continue for a long time. Much of Putin's changes in the past 5 years or so has eroded that according to a friend I made there with whom I exchange e-mails.

Stuxnet virus targeting Iran's Nuclear facilities
RNG replied to GostHacked's topic in The Rest of the World
Bummer. I was hoping the US or Israel could smuggle in a small nuke to the site, initiate it and claim the Iranians messed up and it went Chernobyl. Facts suck. -
But my point still stands. The polls show what people without a life and/or call display think. That is not a random sample.

According to both CTV and CBC, the judge struck down the communicating part, the pimping part and the bawdy house part. I guess doing it on the sidewalk is still illegal. -
Is Global Warming a Leftist Urban Legend?

FTR, I don't put any blame on Margret Thatcher. I have a lot of respect for that lady. But Algore and Suzuki (David, that is, I like the cars) are media whores getting rich on the dumbness of Joe Average. -
I have for years been skeptical about polls as announce in the MSM. I had been contacted by pollsters several times in my life and each experience was painful in one way or another. The most famous was a Polaris poll done shortly after the Kyoto conference, where the dingbat asked something like "do you agree that the Canadian government should try to prevent the entire world from being destroyed?". And they proceeded to say in a press release that most Canadians supported Kyoto. And then there were the ones where they asked what I thought about the Alberta Conservative party, followed up by what my favorite laundry detergent was. And then there are the ones where they ask about the meaning of life but you have to answer yes or no. So I have given up. And all my friends and aquaintences have also. So I now never answer the phone if I don't recognize the number. I let it go to the answering machine. Too much other BS going on. And most people I know are the same way. So the next time I see a poll reported, in order not to violate Canada's truth in advertising laws I really think they should say, 1000 people who don't have a life and/or don't have call display think.................... Your opinion?

Krugman on Canadian Household Debt
RNG replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Fourteen years ago, our children were gone and my wife and I decided to move down to a small, two bedroom condo apartment. I had some medical issues that made shoveling snow and mowing lawns a bit of a hassle, and my wife was developing knee problems so cleaning a 2200 sq ft four bedroom house was a chore. Makes sense so far. Well I was amazed by the reaction of my friends and aquaintinces. Nobody moves to a smaller place, they all told me. I must be crazy. I invested the left-over money into really good dividend paying equities and am smiling like a you-know-what. Silly them, IMHO. -

Is Global Warming a Leftist Urban Legend?
RNG replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Actually there is a "law" in chemistry that states that gasses in a mixture retain their individual properties. Irregarless, CO2 is present in PPM quantities and is a poor IR absorber. Water vapor is present in whole percentage quantities and is a very efficient absorber of IR. And what about the timeline in the graphs? Nice dodge. -
Yeh, seven scotches always do that to me, too.

Fed makes windfall off economic revival programs
RNG replied to Bugs's topic in Business and Economy
The US is seriously screwed. They are owned by China right now. It is only because they are the biggest buyer of Chinese exports that China doesn't pull the plug on all the bonds they hold. WalMart rules. But as the rest of the second world, if I may coin a phrase, like India and Brazil become more dominant, and as Europe recovers, China will be in a position to destroy the US. That, ladies and gentlemen, is a problem for us Canadians. -
Israeli raid on Gaza aid flotilla broke law - UN probe

I wish to go on record as saying that both Israel and the Palestinians are completely and totally wrong. The world would be a better place if they were both removed from the face of the earth. Look at what we in Canada do for our First Nations (if that is the current PC term) people. And Australia is doing similar for theirs. But the stupid Brits, with support of most of the western world, with this huge guile complex about the holocaust decided they could totally screw a whole bunch of locals and create a Jewish state on stolen land. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. But the dumb-assed Palestinians continuing to shoot their ineffective missles et al into Israel justifies their being killed. They both lose, and they both deserve to lose. -
What kind of freaking radical are anyway, thinking like that? It goes against thousands of year of tradition. Actually it totally tee's me off. I have been a small c conservative all my life. I always voted Cap C Conservative, till now. Harper has managed to piss me off to no end. I still hate Liberals from way back, and you need to be challenged to support the NDP IMO. That is totally the answer. Spend less. So tell me, why, in my lifetime, the only governments I am aware of that reduced their countries debt were the freaking Liberals with Martin as Finance Minister, and Clinton, a Dem in the US? DOES NOT COMPUTE!

Please look at the following graphs. If I were more into IT perhaps I could have embedded them here like I can on another board I visit. But look at it. It plainly shows that temp spikes precede CO2 spikes. Explain that one to me. Yes, the globe is warming. But I don't think it is CO2. If anything, it is water vapor. And it probably is due to mankind. All the irrigation, all the human beings breathing and peeing, all the domesticated animals, way more than "natural" numbers of critters on the earth breathing out water vapor and peeing. Not good. CO2 is in PPM concentrations and a poor absorber of IR. Water vapor is in whole percentage numbers and is a very efficient absorber. No current climate model I am aware of includes water vapor. Al Gore is making millions on a hoax. http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/last_400k_yrs.html -

Due to some complex business associations, I once met a madam and had a fascinating conversation with her. She told me she declared her income as self-employed and paid her income tax and all was cool. She figured that she had too much money in the bank and would be at risk of an audit if she didn't. You of course know that the CRA says exactly that. Declare your income, we will not prosecute you or sic the law on you. My brother-in-law retired from the Air Force at the age of 45, and joined Revenue Canada, as it was then. Ex-military had preference to be hired by the fed at the time. He articled as CPA, and his first task was to audit the best hotel in Winnipeg. He found out that the hotel accountant was stealing about 1/3 of the tips left on credit card payments for himself. But he also found out that the ass did report it as income. My BOL wanted like hell to get him busted but the bosses wouldn't let him. So I think at least some of the non-total druggie types might pay their taxes. Besides, municipalities would be in their rights to insist on a license to practice, so more monitoring.
