No, we don't. We fill these positions with friends of the Prime Minister or Premier; they are called patronage appointments. Much worse in my mind. At least the Quenn or her representatives are asked not to make political statements.

I am very much in disagreement with the policies of the Bush administration. I feel that his actions have brought more danger to the world and resentment from the Muslim world and will turn many more into "terrorists". Re-electing Bush will send the message that Americans approve of his actions; including the torturing of prisoners and holding people without allowing them their Geneva convention rights. I think the invasion of Iraq was a big mistake; it took away the focus on the real terrorists. It sacrifices many young peoples lives on a endeavor that was not in defense of their country. A thousand have died but how many more are disabled physcally or mentally for life. This invasion of Iraq was discussed well before the attack on the WTC; it was based on proven invalid information PRIOR to the invasion. It allowed the alQuaeda to regroup and spread.

We need more power with the federal governments; a little less for the Prime Minister and keep our country the sames as now with the Queen. A little symbol of non political figurehead that cost us little is great. Americans are enthralled with royalty and try to invent their own. Besides who else would we want on our money???
-
If I recall; these "intellectuals that he arrested were going to the enemy "USA" with their complaints/information. To do the same in the USA may be called treason and one could be shot. Where are these 140 thousand shot without a trial; Quatanama is under American control where people are being held without their Geneva Convention rights, tortured, and many HAVE died; perhaps you are confusing the two

BC Mountain Eyed for Trudeau Tribute
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
We will never know for sure exactly how much he did do for Canada but I think without his strong action and refusing to bargain with the FLQ despite the additional danger to his own family; we don't know what Canada would look like today. At least for once, most Americans knew the name of our Prime Minister. -
BC Mountain Eyed for Trudeau Tribute
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I like the idea of a mountain named after Trudeau but shorten it to Mt Trudea it sounds a little long to go the whole Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Lots of people in BC liked him at least he said what he meant; you could trust his word. He may have been left of center but he was not "left". But then you Albertan righties think anyone who doesn't believe as you do is leftist. -
There was not much effect from Mount St helens in Vancouver. This newest possible eruption will not be the same or as severe. The earthquake in California is more of a concern. People travelling in Blaine did get their cars covered in ash.

Interesting tidbit I picked up on human rights.

You must be confused; I never referred to Che at all. Castro is not the tyrant that you make him out to be. The Cuban people seem to be quite happy with him. The embargo does mean a lot; who are you kidding. I don't lump Castro with Bush either. Castro doesn't go around bullying the world or thinking he is some kind of god or something. Castro doesn't endanger the world but Bush certainly does.

Governor General Visits Downtown Eastside
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That is a vile and dumb statement even though said in jest. She is doing what she is there for. Attempting to promote Canada and bring us good will. My grand daughter was invited to meet her when she honoured the firemen in Kelowna after the fires. She is a gracious and classy lady. At least she does account for what she spends; more than most politicians do. -
Yeah right. I have no information on Che Guevera not any interests but I do know what a tyrant Bush is and how he has been misleading and lying to Americans and the world. What makes you think that you are so well informed???
-
Only a few Albertans can tolerate that tyrant. Bush is the biggest threat to world peace; bigger than Saddam ever was or even the terrorists.

A higher Canadian dollars hurts lumber sales. I believe. Is our dollar rising or is it the American dollar falling,
-
Obviously, you skipped that post of mine on the 27th. The USA used a lone veto to stop chastising Saddam from using poison gas on the Iranians.
-
-
Wrong. from what I have seen the USA veto has been used to protect Israel and Saddam from taking responsibility for their illegal actions. They have seen the light with Saddam (or perhaps the oil) when will they see that allowing Israel to get away with flagrant abuses of International law is counter productive and will only keep the middle east in turmoil. Just check out a list of Israel violations; it is a very poor record. I, too, used to think Israel was the "good guys" just like I used to believe of the USA. Did I get my eyes opened due to the invasion of Iraq. I found it hard to believe that this was our "good neighbour" acting in such a manner. Invading a country that was cooperating wirh the UN weapons inspectors. They should not have abandoned the concentration on the war on terrorism for this side excursion for oil, revenge or whatever
-
Argus doesn't believe that the USA used its veto alone often.. Just use search UN veto USA to find many sites with long lists. Here is one of interest" How soon we forget our old friends eh
-
And you think Bush has charisma.

I don't consider our opinion of this Iraq fiasco and the attitude of the USA to Canada and other countries as being anti American. It means that we believe in honest actions and allowing other nations to rule themselves. It means we do not believe young people should be sent out to die or be maimed in an illegal and unjust war. I still have hopes that America will steer a better course after a regime change is effected.
-
yes sure; not really. There are many adults working for minimum or barely better especially since you are no longer allowed to quit your job; many cheapo bosses don't feel obligated to give out raises. Gordon Campbell is trying to have all of us working for minimum wage to help out his rich employer friends. Easier for them to make money when they don't have to pay a living wage
-
Only Albertans agree with the USA point of view; there are many Americans in Alberta and they have the majority of our oil and have to a great degree caught the American disease of worshipping the almighty dollar. There were and are not MANY countries that agreed with the USA, Some backed them worrying about the economic lashback if they did not. the two main (recognizeable) nations of Great Britain and Australia did NOT have the backing of the people. The leaders there will have a hard time holding onto power come election time. Do not presume that those supporting your warped view are Canadians; it is not unusual for American to come on our forums masquerading as Canadian when they are in truth American.
-
If your remarks are what you consider nice; I would hate to hear how you really feel. The prisoners are being tortured in many prisons including the one in Cuba; many have since been released as there was NO evidence. Those Americans rounded them up out of fear; many were in the wrong spot at the wrong time. Not all are innocent of defending their country from a foreign invasion; but many are.
-
You are a sicko; there is no evidence that those being tortured are guilty of ANYTHING. I hope you enjoy the beheading of innocent American contractors too. That is violence being returned becasue of American torture. Those young soldiers are being presecuted for these action as scapegoats for their superior officers who ordered the torture. If you are proud of that; you are really sick and ignorant.
-
From what I have seen; this more aptly applies to the USA. Everytime I watch any thing on tv; they cannot even use proper grammar. They do not know anything about their nearest neighbout Canada, either Where's all this lavish money going to teachers. I am sure most would like to see it.

We do not want or need a two tiered system; especially one with a SMALL user fee. If a two tiered system was in place; make them pay the full cost to avoid the line-up. I would prefer the single system; they both use the same doctors in 2 tier so it does nothing to speed up the line up. I could accept a user fee for non urgent or unnecessary doctor / emergency room visits. It is time we modernized our health care system and allow more testing to be done by the patient at home and sent by internet to the doctor. It would save time for the doctor and the patient; especially those less mobile with a long term ailment that requires frequent testing to evaluate the effectiveness of medications etc. Family doctors should be allowed to order MRIs; it seems ridiculous to wait 6 months to see a specialist who simply orders the MRI (another 6 months down the line unless you are willing to pay the shot) Why waste the precious time of our overbooked specialist; patients should arrive with the needed information for the specialist. Stop wasting his time and the patients. What we need to do is streamline the healthcare system; not just pay more. There is no incentive for the Provincial governments to do so when it is their best tool to use to pry more transfer payments from the federal government.
