Trump opposes Free Stuff - Rand Paul
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Your founders designed a system for people like federal senators (Rand Paul) and people like (Barack Obama). Or people like Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. -
Disagree, kinda. I remember the family debates of the 1970s - 90s. Maybe Canada is nowadays different. But I think English-Canadians, women in particular, will stand up for their country. We're not fanatical nationalists - but they won't be bullied. Canadian women always prefer a politician who makes us get along.
-
Harm? In your opinion. So, the federal Liberals are about to win again. Likely a minority but with the BQ and NDP, it will be a stable government. Our federal parliament has many seats. I just received voting instructions for my riding. In Canada, we have to show ID.
-
Video Surely, it's now off copyright. Anything with Dan Duryea is a good movie. He's the real William Macy.
-
You Right-Wingers are blaming China (the Chinese Communist Party) since ordinary people/women in Ontario don't want Singh/NDP, nor Trudeau Jnr. And Poilievre is unpalatable. Carney is the best alternative. ====== As they say, the federal Liberal support is a mile wide, and an inch deep.
-
Now is the time for Poilievre to throw this back at the Liberals and the NDP: In 1988, in the free trade debate, John Turner accused Brian Mulroney of not being Canadian:
-
Since the late 1940s, the world has largely reduced tariffs - and barriers to trade. Ronald Reagan said famously: "Tear down this wall!" ===== I am surprised to see my fellow Canadians oppose a president who wants to impose tariffs, barriers. Turner and Atwood once argued that free trade would destroy their Canada. Trump wants to impose tariffs, barriers: push Canada away from America - and the same Canadians oppose Trump!
-
Deluge, Do you know how many Canadians have lost jobs because of new technology? We don't need bank tellers any more - kids do this online. Is that bad? We don't have phone booths anymore. How many guys lost jobs collecting the money? Is that bad?

Trump opposes Free Stuff - Rand Paul

Singapore has no tariffs whatsoever -regardless what tariffs other countries impose. Tariff war? Domestic abuse: "I'll stop hitting my wife when you stop hitting yours." -

Strongly disagree. Sen. Paul is a doctrinaire American, like Barry Goldwater: a good senator but a terrible president. -
Mulroney vs Harper, Trudeau Jnr, Chretien: Legacy
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
More or less. The Trudeau Jnr years have been too much social change. -
Canada's Prime Minister Allegiance -Pierre Trudeau YUL
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I suspect that this will be an issue: Donald Trump is an American. Vladimir Putin is Russian. Everyone knows this Xi guy is Chinese. ===== Make no mistake, Pierre Trudeau was a Canadian. He lived, worked, retired and died in Canada. Even foreigners will not vote for a guy who is a born-here, sort-of Canadian. -
He was born in 1977. His wife was born in 1953. I knew about the huge age difference. Peu importe. ==== In the US press, copying French innuendo, there are now allegations that "he was a she". "..and the coloured girls go do-to-do"

You Americans are good for ideas. America is good for ideas. As a Canadian, trust me, we borrow. We Canadians are free riders on your ideas: your good will. === We could not wish for better southern neighbors. And you too, you could not wish for better people to the north, better neighbours.

Mulroney vs Harper, Trudeau Jnr, Chretien: Legacy
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
LOL. Mulroney also tried to reform UIC. ===== I think Trump wants to impose a federal VAT. Like Mulroney, Trump knows that a federal consumption tax will make the US federal America sustainable. The GST and US free trade are Mulroney's greatest achievements. He failed with Meech. What does Trudeau Snr have as legacy? The Official Languages Act, the Charter, a f*up Constitution, amending formula. Both Mulroney and Trudeau Snr kept the country together, without bloodshed - and in decency. -
Rethink: What does Trump want?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
More broadly, thinking in a different way, why do we have NORAD? Who are we (Americans/Canadians) protecting ourselves against? The Soviet Union? ====== As an entity, a continent, I think that we Canadians and Americans should rethink our affairs. -
Rethink: What does Trump want?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
And yet, make no mistake, Trump is correct. 1. When I fly from Toronto to Montreal, it's expensive. I can't fly United. 2. I cannot buy milk from the US even if is identified as GMO. 3. All cheese is expensive and I have so little choice. I can't buy Oregon wine. 4. I can't do deals through Charles Schwab. 5. I can have a cheap Chinese phone but I can't have a Verizon plan. 6. I must log in to Netflix Canada. -
Deluge, if people in China are willing to work for far lower wages, does this harm us? How low? Sunlight is free. Gravity is free. Imagine if a foreign source would work for nothing?
-
Strongly disagree. Trump is imposing taxes on Americans. ===== Singapore, a place with very rich people, imposes no tariffs/taxes on any foreign imports - regardless of what taxes/tariffs the foreigners impose on Singapore. A cease-fire in a tariff war means I stop hitting my head - so you stop hitting your head. Heck, I can stop hitting my head whatever you do. Trump is hitting his own head - or rather, he's hitting the head of ordinary Americans. === Maybe, just maybe, Trump's action may stop foreign governments from hitting their citizen's heads. When I can buy New Zealand butter or good French cheese in Canada, I'll beleive it.
-
I disagree strongly with your premise. The Left is the left - Democrats, democrats, whatever. I recently flew in a Boeing 737 Max to Cuba. I traded with Cubans. Decades ago, in Soviet times, I traded with Russians. What's the difference? ==== Cuba nowadays is not a threat to the world. The Soviet Union was.
