  1. IOW, the State can borrow at lower interest rates than any individual. Most lenders look at credit rating. history before deciding the interest rate. Borrower A: I missed a few payments last year. But I have a job. Borrower B: My rich uncle gives me money every month. Borrower C: I have access to the bank accounts of Bill Gates and Laurene Powell Jobs and I can take money from them any time I want. Guess which borrower gets the lowest interest rate?
  2. AG, this is true. Some 100 or so Canadian soldiers died in Afghanistan - about 500 in Korea. I live in Montreal and near my place, there's a war memorial that records the names of men who died in the Boer War. In the June 1944 landing, there were five so-called "beaches". One beach involved Canadians. Why? Canadians had the experience of landing in Dieppe in 1942 ) Lester Pearson was a soldier in WWI. He won a Nobel Peace Prize. Henry Kissinger was a soldier in WWII. He also won a Nobel Peace Prize. To avoid another disaster of history (such as happened between 1914-1945), we need a new structure of peace.
  3. Some radical change is "good". The collapse of the Berlin Wall for example was radical, revolutionary and good. I prefer slow change; I'm conservative by nature. But here's one of my points in the OP: this change/transition in 1989 was radical, revolutionary - and peaceful.
  4. The actors: Ann Sothern, Richard Conte and of course Raymond Burr - as the bad guy, before he became Perry Mason. (BTW, he was tested as Ham Burger before becoming Perry Mason.) Fritz Lang directed this movie. It is good because of him but I suspect that he wondered what he was doing. Nat King Cole sang the song. To my 2020s ear, it doesn't work like Dooley Wilson. Your call ]

  5. Before 1989 and the defeat of the Soviet Union, I understand such gatherings. In Yalta and Potsdam, we were creating a regime of peace - like in the Congress of Vienna But since 1990 or so, every time I see a photo of the G-20 or whatever it is now, I am reminded of this photo: https://www.rct.uk/collection/themes/exhibitions/crown-and-camera-the-british-royal-family-and-photography-1842-1910/the-queens-gallery-buckingham-palace/nine-sovereigns-at-windsor-for-the-funeral-of-king-edward-vii-1910 This photo was taken in 1910. Ordinary people lived well Within a few years, these clueless, elite created a disaster and some would be dead. For no reason at all, for the next few decades, millions of ordinary people would die. ====== We are not facing Hitler or Stalin. This is not the 1930s. We are in a world like the 1910s.
  6. Deluge, I disagree. There are several key States: Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin, Nevada, Georgia, Wisconsin, Minnesota. Each of these states has a large urban center, certain counties. ===== Unlike Nixon or Reagan, no Republican has any chance ever in NY and California. Since 2020, no Republican has any chance in Pennsylvania.
  7. Civil war. An oxymoron. Like military intelligence. Good point.
  8. I agree with most, Trump will pick someone outside of his base. (He has a lock on his base.) Trump? He will pick a winner (Kari Lake for example lost.) ======= Everyone says that the VP doesn't matter. In 1960, LBJ made JFK president.
  9. Steve Jobs famously said that death is the ultimate change agent. ==== My point was different. Diversity? Life itself forces us to live among different beings. Some are bouncing kittens, others older tired cats.
  10. I disagree. Many people now living in Canada have a different view of war, and world history.
  11. This is a common discussion/argument. Here are my arguments: 1. I first tried that a State will live forever. (I will not live forever.) 2. I tried the idea that my ex-wife can use my debit card or credit card, I still pay. 3. I noted that the Quebec government can borrow at lower interest rates - it can put me in jail if I don't pay. 4. State debt? It could be a Ponzi scheme if a State sells bonds more than the GDP growth rate.
  12. A very young Donna Reed. Edward Arnold. (No connection to the Green Acres, Edward Albert guy). Fred Zinneman. He later directed A Man for All Seasons. Go figure. A ridiculous story based on a blind detective - and a dog named Friday.
  13. Trump won by about 11%. For both Trump and Haley, I'd call that a loss. If she had done worse, she would retire. With these numbers in NH, Trump can't win overall. ===== Hailey will foolishly continue. To win overall in November, Trump needs far stronger numbers.
  14. You miss my point. Life is not a highway. Life is a road-trip.
  15. It's amusing to see the righties admire Trudeau Snr and his Charter.
  16. The diversity in life is not skin colour, religion, language, orientation - it is age. We all must live amongst people of different ages. In a sustainable society, old people live with children. Kittens bother older cats. Life is a process.
  17. I admire Lise Payette - wife of Andre Payette.
  18. When Trump won in 2016, by accident, I suspect that he thought that this was easy. Trump then learned that dealing in politics is different than dealing in money. He famously said, "Negotiating with politicians is like making a deal with this table." ==== He will lose in 2024 - as he did in 2018, 2020, 2022.
  19. No. You have a typical urban/CBC/R-C/sophisticated view of Trump. Trump worked real estate in NYC! ===== Trump will pick a winner. And someone who will make him win.
  20. On this forum, these posts don't work. We are a tiny corner of the Internet.
  21. I reckon that Trump will pick a winner. And someone who will bring America together.
  22. Disagree. ==== Democrats have always argued that voter registration is a way that Republicans make it difficult for people to vote. In counties of Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania - Democrats have found a way to get out the vote. Kryptonite. And it's not cheating. The Democrats are doing God's work.
  23. In these 2020s, we are not facing a 1930s world. Between 1914 and 1945 the world was in tumult. Rather, in these 2020s, we are living in a civilised world like the 1910s. I hope this civilised world continues - and we don't screw it up like an elite in 1914 did.
  24. I'm told the Chinese have lived for 5000 years. Your written constitution has survived a Civil War. I'm betting on you.
