  1. Last year the CHRC had about 1000 complaints and 900 or so were workplace related, 20 related to Section 13. However, Section 13 ones are those that get the most publicity - "hate messages". That's what has been used to go after Macleans, it's the section used by Richard Warman to go after people. It's the section that the private member's bill wants to rescind. I agree it has to go. Whatever value it might have had it is now being used to attempt to stifle legitimate speech. I think our democracy is strong enough that we can put up with some ranting and raving.
  2. I don't see that changing; however, expecting immigrants to assimilate is questionable. They will want to learn English over French to permit more mobility. If Quebec is facing any danger signs it's a low birth rate. And only francophones can do anything about that.
  3. That phenomenon has gotten some commentary in the MSM. I'm not sure how much of a "Quebec" issue it is as much as people gravitating to where the roads are paved with goal. I suspect there has been an influx into Alberta from other provinces too.
  4. Just as the ambitious francophones learn English, as well of course, as retaining French. And I don't think any serious commentator would suggest that they "give up" French. Isn't everything politics? Charest has tried to be as non-intrusive as possible. "Promotion" of French rather than trying to expand Bill 101 to smaller employers. Even the $12 mil was taken from the "culture" budget.
  5. I have no problem with any of that. The most important thing is that immigrants continue to choose which language stream they prefer. Even though immigrants are required to send their kids to French-language schools many (perhaps most) of them choose to learn English too.
  6. This will continue. French is no longer relevant as an international language and immigrants to Canada know this. The ones with ambition will select English as the language to learn. Efforts to prevent this by Quebec will at best have modest success.
  7. Allophones will obviously opt for English. They know which language is of more value to them. Mme St-Pierre herself acknowledges that Quebec's 6 million francophones are surrounded by 350 million English speakers.
  8. The province's road surfaces are 3rd world, the health system is maybe the worst in the country, over 150 overpasses need repair and what does the government do? It hires people to see if store owners have an "ouvert" sign as well as an "open" sign on the door. BOOSTING FRENCH
  9. Saw him on the BBC. He was in London. Outside number 10 with Prime Minister Brown. Looking very Presidential. Had Lieberman with him. Is he the VP pick?
  10. If Sen McCain doesn't (god forbid) make it to the White House I would invite him to Canada to head up the Liberal Party, an organization in desperate need of a leader.
  11. Sure shows what our economy is made of. Commodities go south, so does the dollar. Down another cent this morning.
  12. Not when the issue is the economy which is clearly the case. If people can't make their mortgage payments or are in fear of being laid off that preys on their minds a lot more than worrying about which Muslim country is Sunni and which is Shiite.
  13. Surely there's the rub. It's not a law that keeps guns out of the hands of felons, nutters, kids. It bans all of them. Is that reasonable? IMO, no.
  14. No brainer to me. The US has been attacked by terrorists and Muslims radicals would give up their 72 virgins to assassinate the Pope on US soil. If Sikhs want to meet the Pope, let them go to the Vatican.
  15. Sounds like it's related to the restructuring in the auto industry rather than NAFTA. Layton had his chance to blame this on NAFTA but chose not to. Recently we have lost thousands of manufacturing jobs, as much to do with the increase in value of the dollar as anything else.
  16. I watched it. Jack-Lou use China as an example of where raw goods go abroad and finished product come back. "We are like a third world country" was one comment. How did China get involved in a slam against NAFTA? Layton did not give one example of a Canadian job going to Mexico because of NAFTA.
  17. It's origin is the New Testament but it's lack of reference to Jesus of Nazareth means it does not have to be confined to Christianity in usage.
  18. It passed at second reading, 147-133 and now goes to Committee for study. This might be due to the abortion exclusion, or maybe in spite of it. Unborn Victims of Crime
  19. And John McCain just sits back and smiles watching the Dems tear themselves apart. Bad night for the Dems, good night for the GOP.
  20. The Bill had its final hour of debate yesterday. Bill C-484 It will now be voted on at second reading on Wednesday. About 1700 (5pm), EST
  21. And that is why the "Lord's Prayer" is considered so innocuous, religiously speaking. Its concept of God is generic.
  22. "There goes your Semite, Hugh. Different God, different mountain top". from "Chariots of Fire".
  23. I think we are past that. The combatants have been set for November - an old white guy vs a young black man.
