Soccer has riots - other sports have problems with gambling, drug abuse and basketball's specialty is signing players who beat up women. Soccer at least is still a legitimate sport, more than you can say about cycling.

Liberal Resigns over Election Expenses
maldon_road replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
And when the committees start-up again the Tories will be back to their old bag of tricks - the chair resigning to shut down committee business; canceling sessions to prevent witnesses that are not to the Tories' liking. Same antics as the Libs. -
Maybe you are right. But I have only heard the issue raised as a "problem" in federal elections.

UK Abortion Act is not working as intended
maldon_road replied to maldon_road's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
By Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor This is an issue where the antagonists take no prisoners yet here we have a Prince of the Vatican talking about the need for "achievable and incremental improvements" in the current law in the UK. It would appear that political realties have come to the fore. Taking extremist positions do not seem to have worked so the Cardinal may have been reduced to the same position as the rest of us - being thankful for small mercies. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jh...0/28/do2804.xml -
I think Quebec law already requires it. St Jean has been talking about amending the human rights act to give women "super-rights" where their rights would trump religious ones.

All small states with few electoral votes. Not the states Hilly hopes to win. -
To get my library card renewed I need to produce picture ID. I sure don't object to doing it to get banking services. And I don't mind showing my mug to vote.
-
No. But it did not seem unreasonable. You go in with a bank card and purport to be George Stephen Harper Bush. Asking for a picture ID that tallies with YOU and has a name the same as the bank card seemed to be prudent when I asked to buy a sterling money order.

I'm not talking about an ATM machine. I'm talking about a bank branch. I would expect that someone walking into a bank branch with his head covered would generate a call to the police. In Vancouver recently I went into a bank branch - my bank, BMO. Gave them my ATM card, then they asked for picture ID so they could compare the name on the card with the name and photo on my drivers licence with me. Hard to do that with a Loblaws bag on your head.

If you walk into a bank with a bag over your head would they serve you if you just handed them an ATM card and you asked for 500 bucks?

Canada Elections Act http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/showdoc/cs/E-...h=50&page=6 Section 143 143. (1) Each elector, on arriving at the polling station, shall give his or her name and address to the deputy returning officer and the poll clerk, and, on request, to a candidate or his or her representative. Proof of identity and residence (2) If the poll clerk determines that the elector’s name and address appear on the list of electors or that the elector is allowed to vote under section 146, 147, 148 or 149, then, subject to subsection (3), the elector shall provide to the deputy returning officer and the poll clerk the following proof of his or her identity and residence: (a) one piece of identification issued by a Canadian government, whether federal, provincial or local, or an agency of that government, that contains a photograph of the elector and his or her name and address; or (b ) two pieces of identification authorized by the Chief Electoral Officer each of which establish the elector’s name and at least one of which establishes the elector’s address. There is nothing unreasonable in a voter giving visual identification. And if it hasn't been as issue before then it won't be in the future.

In the Quebec by-elections several people showed up to vote with bags over their heads. One way or another it had to be dealt with.

Governing "As If He Had a Majority"

But Parliament is not malfunctioning. Stevie Wonder (to continue the musical analogy) is spoon feeding the HofC with bills the Libs don't have the gonies to vote down and cause an election. Craven, of course, but these are Liberals. They have the ethics of a whorehouse accountant. I'm waiting for the bill to remove long guns from the gun registry. See how many rural MPs dare vote against it. -

The Liberal Party put Dion on notice with the loss of Outremont. One more loss of a Liberal seat in a by-election then the knives will be out. -

Condoleezza Rice addresses Meher Arar
maldon_road replied to mikedavid00's topic in Canada / United States Relations
I heard Condi speak and the only "error" she admitted to was communications - that is, the US didn't tell Canada that they were planning to ship him off to Syria. Big deal. -
Seems to have gone the way our old act went --- it was supposed to only operate where the health of the woman was affected but soon became abortion on demand in some places. A Parliamentary committee is looking at it and we can expect sparks to fly as the abortion antagonists rail at one another.
