  1. Provinces Legislate the Tuition, Universities collect it. There is nothing to Stop Alberta, Manitoba, Sask from lowering tuitions. Ontario just rebated tuitions 30%. But the Tuition is still to high. The government should have lowered the tuition and killed the rebate as the rebate can be swallowed up by tuition increases. Just so you understand. A Province with a Balanced budget or budget surplus can receive Transfer paysments. Any Province Receiving monies, IE transfer payments helps and transfer payments have no strings attached, thus a Province can and do, foolishly give out corporate tax cuts thus negating much of the transfer. Same with a have or have not PRovince, regardless of the transfer payments they can set the price of tuition. Plain and Simple. Education is the best investment. Why load up student debt? Heck the Federal Government is in the largest whole any federal government has ever been in and its spending in my region like a drunken sailor. Pork for everyone. How about $800,000 last month alone to stop EXPLODING SAUSAGES. Well, go and figure it out. A HAVE Province has more wealth Per capita and capital then a Have Not Province. IF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WITHHELD AND KEPT ALL THE TAXES instead of transferring. It would mean less funds to the have not Provinces, Perhaps they would have to raise corporate taxes to make up the difference or increase the Provincial portion of the HST or possibly kill the program or run a deficit. However this would have NO bearing on a HAVE province. So ask yourself, Why are these Provinces with great wealth gouging students.
  2. I recall my Conservative MP saying that the Provinces need to do a better job on gun control and registeries and not the feds. Its bloated and a waste of tax dollars. Thus if a Province should want to take on the burden of their portion of the registery, and since their is plenty of Provincial regulation on guns to begin with.... this is hardly a silly ruling. What court would suggest a Province start a registery from scratch when the data has already been accumulated. The Feds have put the ball in the Provinces court.
  3. I have a bridge for sale.
  4. I believe Quebec is getting set up as the bogeyman to challenge the transfer. Whats next, Health Transfer...kill that too?
  5. Its still cheaper then in every Province except perhaps NB.I see nothing wrong with low tutions, students are getting debt sentences in the other provinces. There is NOTHING to stop other Provinces from lowering their tutition. "HAVE" Provinces provide the baseline. Have and Have not Provinces decide their tutition rates. The rate of tutition is paid by students to the Universities, it is set by the government. Provinces LOAN monies to Students. Students pay.
  6. Quebec could have balanced budgets if it choose to much like the Federal Government is running budget deficits. Quebec it isn't broke and you are in need of a lesson on transfer payments as they can be received by Provinces running a budget surplus. I know of know a handful of millionaires courtesy of that Useless Arts Degree. We have a constitution. Perhaps you need to read it.
  7. Hi James Welcome to MLW Somehow I don't think you will be here long as you have posted only to advance an agenda. Regardless, Hard Working Canadians can apply and go to University in Quebec, as a handful of my friends did. And yes, clearly tuitution fees are too high in the other Provinces. Transfer payments have nothing to do with the price of tuition.
  8. ELect to Work, Means that you voluntarily sign a contract to work under a separate provision of the Employment Standards Act. People do not realize when they sign these contracts that they now have less rights then a part time employee at Tim Hortons. Thus someone who signs a 13 page temp contract through an Agency have allowed for such things as wage deductions for collecting your pay. Yes, you read that correct. Imagine a Teacher having a deduction off their pay to account for the direct deposit. Imagine a $2 fee to the Agency because you wanted to receive your pay. Also recently such things as being sent to a job just over an hour away to discover when you get there for your 11pm shift, the agency has sent or called 40 people in hopes 25 will show up. 15 arbitrarily are sent home, there has been no minimum hours received or paid for such inconvience. I do know some agencies might cover it, it depends on how they feel that day. I have heard of Agencies charging for the bus/van/car lift to said job, even if the job position is cancelled on arrival. And the strangest part about it, people will put up with alot hoping to land a good job and not tick off the Agency which holds the employment to many many companies in a location. THus you could walk away from an Agency but in effect you are walking away from a potential 100 companies that they may have a contract with in a city or region.
  9. New Employees in most Union Shops have a 90 day to 180 period in which they are not Union Members. No Shop steward can protect them. Management determine whether or not someone is fit to remain. The decision rests with HR from input from the Foreman. They can easily (AND ARE) terminated if they do not perform. The Ball totally rests with the Management and management has the right to terminate ro keep and employee. Of course, because the Steward has nothing better to do then run around and chase the tail of a demanding worker with a bad attitutde that is always in his eyeballs in crap. And Stewards will ignore all the inputs from his coworkers of 20 years that are on him about that employee with the bad attitude not carrying his load. Sure the Steward will defend him harder because he wants his workplace enviroment to be miserable and poisoned by a bad apple. I am sure that steward is thinking, yup, can't wait for this turkey to pass probation, he is going to burn up alot of union members dough. If not he is terminated like anyone else as he is not fit to do the job prescribe. You want to displace a good worker for a bsd worker? All companies I have dealt with in Canada have a quality policy and a discipline procedure relating to quality issues. Usually anything from direct immediate discipline including termination or in lessor quality issues, progressive discipline with gives time for corrective action. Essentially shape up or ship out. Writings on the wall. If its deliberate, its sabotage and that is a fireable offence in any company. Exists in every contract including USW. 1) The Company hired this lazy poor worker. Not the Union 2) The Company did not weed out said worker before probation period ended. 3) After said worker is in the Union, the union has a legal obligation to represent that worker, with a steward. Failure to do so results in a DFR. The steward then handles the dispute and the dispute is resolved by the process in the Collective Agreement of the company and the union. Its called a contract. Job Performance and description of the job is part of any contract . Well , well well, I have never known an insurance scammer unless its been a Union member. I am sure that non union people would ever engage in such a practice. Lets see, you had a neighbour and really you don't know if he is or isn't disabled or what the disability is. Perhaps it was brain damage, lung damage, abspetos or PCP used as hand and face cleaners....worked way better then thinner from the parts washer... But that said, if he is scamming, he is scamming a benefits package that union members and companies pay into. He is screwing everyone. That saying good video given to the provider often changes the amount of the benefit including termination of said benefits. And I have witnessed that as well as anyone. CUT OFF. You see, a cheat is a cheat. Its got nothing to do with a Union as a cheat scams and union just like anyone else. Not a valid issue. Whmis is pretty dang clear. Health and Safety, well I have seen (in my non union position) management argue that the dock collapsing was not a Health and Safety threat for forklift drivers. Fact is, You might have been saved alot of grief with the Union/management joint process as some people , by pass the Union and call the Ministry and if you want a HEADACHE that is how you get one. Just bring in the government on health and safety. They never leave empty handed. True False. You have to be kidding. The Union is obligated by law to "represent" the individually fairly. That includings telling them whether they "Have a Grievance" need a violin, some wine and some cheese, or even, yes you got a point, but its not in the agreement so there is nothing that can be done. Unions, in my experience are very orderly and the rules are very clear, thus to run into issues with Overtime and such are often the result of new inexperienced foreman who make honest mistakes, to companies deciding they want to run the show differently and ignore the contract they signed. Sometimes its creating a crises. I have never seen that as a better avenue, but its a fact of life these things happen too. Well I won't disagree with you here... exactly were did you criticise management, I read alot of union stuff only.... As a director of KPMG told me 5 years ago. We are much happier to operate in a Union SHop as they have a strong chain of command that can accomplish goals when the management of the company we are invested in through court order is breaking down or unable ot perform their duties. That said WB, for every analogy you have, I have one as well. Infact from every side of the fence and I have been on both sides over the years. A union operation being later in my life and I ate alot of crow cause I believed alot of crap I was told.
  10. I disagree. I could see Quebecers to eliminate the Senate. I could see the West voting to Eliminate the Senate I could see Altlantic Canada eliminating the Senate. Its not like these seats have any bearing on the region in practice. Its just a pasture of patronage. And populist waves often take on a form of their own and eliminating government duplication and waste becomes very popular when the Senate is exposed to scutiny over its entitlements and priveledges.
  11. No false outrage here either.... I really don't like this spam creeping in....
  12. I follow your story.. and will add.... Temp Agencies are contract "Elect to Work" employers. They are often in control of the labour supply for the companies that have subcontracted the work within those establishments above. Mind you, I will never forget the snear and comment a teacher once made in the 80s about the "overpaid" janitor within the highschool. Sentiments swing back and forth overtime. But I believe that the exploitation of the working poor has been on a steady rise.
  13. Thats a very candid and honest response. Don't underestimate the voter. In KW, it had close to the turnout of the past general election during the by election. They were definitely engaged, you don't get that kind of turnout unless the electorate are paying attention. So the voters saw something different then you see things, or they accepted the things you describe and voted for it. But for whatever reason, this electorate with 22 years of voting PC , balked this time around.
  14. No False outrage here. I think its just stupid, stupid, stupid thing to do.
  15. and virtually thousands upon thousands of companies who use temp agencies to provide full time work year round , year after year with no benefits and very low pay while gouging the wage of the employee. Considering there are over 14,000 temp agency brands and likely a few hundred thousand temp agency offices, using the "Elect to Work" provisions of the labour code makes Wall Mart and Home Depot look like good corporate citizens in comparison
  16. Yes it happened. Complete lack of judgement on Justin Trudeaus part. A smart person would have never recorded the message in the first place. Completely absurd if not a totally foolish and desperate move. Its one of the reasons I think the Liberals will never recover from the cellar. They want to play the Sovereignty card.
  17. I will only state that you have misread my post.
  18. I believe you when you say it, but I don't believe any government of any stripe would dare add Saudi Arabia to the mix.
  19. Oh.. I see... In 1995, Mr. Robitaille was working for Wheel-Trans, which provides transportation for people with disabilities, when he was called a hero. Brian Mitchell, who has a rare lung and muscle disorder, was barely conscious when Mr. Robitaille found him on the floor of his home. Mr. Mitchell said that he would have died if it was not for the efforts of Mr. Robitaille. and for Cyber... http://news.nationalpost.com/2010/11/29/ttc-employee-caught-sleeping-on-the-job-in-january-dies-of-stroke/
  20. Atu Newsletter a friend gave me... thus the reference to the ATU.
  21. All Good, Most people wouldn't know. I have decided to edit on the details... He looked alot older but he was only 55. George Robitaille, 55, passed away after suffering from a stroke, reported the Amalgamated Transit Union. Robitaille was on medication for a cardio condition. He apologized to the public and to his co-workers, then took a medical leave. Kinnear noted Robitaille had a flawless record during his 29 year career; however, the public reaction over the sleeping photograph left his disheartened
  22. I think the voters were wise in KW they kept the Liberals from a Majority government. I think Hudak or the PC riding association was foolish in choosing a turncoat former Liberal Candidate in Vaughn Sorry, but both these ridings are held federally by the conservatives. Can you explain why the PCs couldn't grab Vaughn and LOST KW?
  23. Yes always good to make fun of dead people
  24. THREAD DRIFT ALERT!!! . The changes you speak of where in 2005. But it was axed completely in 2010. It was reintroduced in 2011 to comply with the Human Rights Code.
