  1. A doctor is required to document someone for ODSP. This can take up to 6 months or longer. Can you prove that they are faking? It only takes proof to have someone removed. That is because it is "Fraud". I dare you to try to "fake" the screening process and receive ODSP. Last night I hosted dinner with one of those "fakers". My wife had to cut her meat for her as she is paralyzed on one side of her body. EI was changed back in 1995. The eligibility for EI has changed little. You pay into it. EI ran a $56Billion Surplus that was taken and used for other pet projects by the government. EI payouts were reduced back in 1995. 55% is not alot of money to receive from your base wage. If you earned $10.25 you would get $5.50 on EI. If you make $20 you would get $10 in EI. However, you have to pay it back particularly if you make over $46,000 or such. ALso any EI is deducted from your severance. Also both Severance and EI is taxed. This could easily put somene over the threshold. EI benefits have always fluctuated based upon region. The higher the Unemployment at the time of your termination or layoff, the longer or shorter you will be able to collect EI. EI requires you to provide a list of all email, hardcopy and phone correspondence for your jobsearch. EI will Terminate, fine and BAN for 5 years or more, anyone engaged in fraud or that mistakenly files their claims incorrectly or takes a trip outside of Canada. EI imho is a support mech for a slow bleed. Anyone who is used to earning a wage of $40,000 or more is unlikely to make ends meet while on EI. Anyone making closer to $10 prior to termination is unlikely to make ends meet while on EI. As there are generally more minimum wage jobs , its regular that the transistion back into teh workforce is quicker for lower waged. The % of people who pay into EI and would be eligible to collect is around 60%. I recall a couple gentlemen with 40 years, yes, 40 years of experience not yet 65 and collecting their first EI cheque. They were shocked and startled by the interrogation process, and a bit bitter as they had never previously collected EI in their life. The biggest change in EI was the Conservative government to fail to provide to the Ontario Government their portion of the EI training monies. Thus retraining took a kick in the teeth as the ads ran and the retraining and self employment programs had no actual funding. In 2009 an election was averted as the CPC worked with the NDP to extend EI in Regions of greater hardship. This added 20 weeks to those with 30 years of experience or 55 years of age. The demographic of Diane Finleys riding, the Minister who prescides over EI. So...if you ever remember her statement "We are NOT going to pay people to lay on the couch" It wasn't backed up with training funds, as that would have bankrupted the country, also they had already given away $8 Billion in Corporate tax breaks to the very companies who laid off the majority of these employees. In the end, the Conservatives quietly paid people to "stay home" or more accurately, continue to seek work vs seek training, until the market corrected. Obviously its better today tehn in 2009. ALOT better. But there is a long ways to go, and those stats from London demonstrat that. By the way Jibblethead. Welcome to MLW, I see you have posted alot since your arrived.
  2. Possibly one of the best articles on Job losses and Ontario Works was written last year, continuing 3 years of pain in London Ontario. This is startling as London is a very well educated and finance driven city. The Anedotal evidence above is just that. An opinion, and an observation but peel the layers off the onion and see what is really happening and as of last year, it wasn't good. http://www.lfpress.com/news/london/2011/06/10/18266391.html Just some highlights. The article covers the diverse problems hitting the region. Now, IMHO, with that many skilled people out of work..... why would I consider to hire someone with drug addictions and a poor work ethic to my firm, first? Since 2007 London started to Hemorage. The housing market has been in decline. The stimulus in construction has ended... And quite frankly anyone who thinks that one is going to have a great life on $550 a month (single male) before Rent would be foolish to trade their working security for such "Luxury". Finger pointing to anecdotal is always fun. I recall once a large number of people hating the "welfare" family down the road. It turned out that the Welfare hotline was called and sure enough... no one in the household was on the dole. We all have an anecdotal story. I got lots on Poor University students with heavy tuition debt and no job 3 to 6 months after graduating. Its either welfare or waiting on tables or a combination of both. But the concern is not if someone is on welfare, its Why are they there now? What has changed? And will this be the end of the line or the security of person to start a new beginning. I got no use for those who point fingers at those affected the most by this recession. I have watched people lose their homes, their cars, their families during the 1 to 2 years it takes to turn things around again. And then its rebuilding from the bottom up. No Canadian likes one who abuses a system. I can't recall which person it was that was on Welfare that wreaked havoc on my associates pensions, or caused 5 and 6 figure losses to investments...... Must have been that welfare recipient Maddof..... See their is such a thing as corporate handouts and securities. If one is breaking the law, they are breaking the law. Don't confuse those who break the law with those who are people in need. Anymore then you confuse a stock investor with a criminal such as maddof. One Brush , a bucket of tar and feathers. have fun.
  3. If Canadians Stop burning oil, more can be sold to China and the US. On the otherhand, if Canada stopped selling to the world and kept all the oil for domestic use, it would last a very very very very very long time....... Neither option is going to happen.
  4. New Poll PCs = 37 NDP - 35 Lib - 20 The Forum Research interactive voice survey of 851 Ontarians on Monday shows the Liberals have fallen to 20 per cent support — well behind Progressive Conservatives at 37 per cent and New Democrats at 35 per cent. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1262810--ontario-liberals-support-slumps-poll-finds
  5. If I recall correctly. Kraychik is not an English name....
  6. I doubt there is any position on Trudeau and the students. Just as there wasn't a position from the Federal Conservative Gov or the Opposition. Not All Students were Protesting VIOLENTLY, correct. The majority were simply protesting. Yes, a minority of students were against the protest. All STudents will benefit from the protest as many more students who would have been to young to follow the events will receive lower tuitions when there time comes for post 2ndary. The Students won a hard fought battle. I have students in Ontario who were complaining about the Quebec Protest (not that it affected them) and then complaining about their own outrageous post 2ndary debt. The fight is over, and it has nothing to do with Trudeau. He will stick to fluff, maybe knock out another Conservative Senator and ask for donations for his campaign. With regards to poor judgement, Trudeaus Kitchernr Waterloo Robo call is a lesson in absurd.
  7. Prediction: Justin Trudeau steps aside before the Leader is elected.
  8. Didn't see any specifics either. Why not draft up a few from your perspective and see where that goes?
  9. Nor does he require a Violin or Wine.....
  10. Such students don't normally progress to post 2ndary, but should they, I would suspect an early exit. Just as the same attitude will shorten ones career in employment. Let me know when Military trainig adopts a similar approach ....
  11. They don't teach marketing and communications in school Facebook and Twitter are such tools. Next you will ban the radio, the film projector, the audiotape, the televison, the video tape, the computer, the internet and while we are at it books.... As all can be used as a diversionary tool.
  12. It sounds intrusive because it is intrusive. Infact that is what the hoopla is all about and nothing else. The Iranian angle is simply a smokescreen.
  13. If you have an injunction, or restraining order, or judgement against a person and they must remain 300 meters away from your home, then it becomes illegal for that person to stand on the sidewalk within that distance. The person cited is to obey the court order or face prosecution.
  14. If one solicits and opinion from the Gay Community ... shouldn't one be ready to accept the response from that community. The Conservatives initiated a poorly thought out propoganda piece and whats happened is called blowback. I am very concerned by the method of sourcing and targeting a selected group. Its something we are used to have happening in the very countries we so rightly criticise.
  15. I tend to find that Left Wing Comedians call themselves .... Comedians.... and Right Wing Comedians call themselves Fair and Balanced News Reporters.
  16. The Last leader to hold those credentials would be Jack Layton. I don't think there is going to be another PET anymore then there is going to be another Layton. I would consider it wrong to weigh this upon on a new leader, and even moreso to hold the younger Trudeau to such a standard. PET, like him or hate him, their isn't going to be another one on the horizon anytime soon. And only people in their late 40s and up even remember that era.
  17. Never thought of it like that. I think you nailed it. Harper by being Harper put New Democrats in the postion to pick someone similar to Harpers style, vs someone with more populist or left leaning appeal, be it Cullen or Topp that didn't have that style of leadership. I think Trudeau has the Leadership race locked up.
  18. And facebook and twitter will fade on to the next fad. Yes they are tools, like the blackberry is a tool. And amazingly Facebook and twitter exist on my work computer. And as an Employer , I do not expect my employees to be using Facebook and twitter during company time for their own personal use, no different then a telephone. No different then a computer that has MSWord or Maple on it, vs playing solitaire. The same can be said for a student. There are tools, and there are distractions. Societal Problems are not an excuse for bad policy.
  19. 1) They are the Parent, its their Children and not only do they want a Say, it gives them the opportunity to listen. Thats why its called a meeting and not a lynching. 2) Yes, some parents are non educational experts. 3) Some are involved in education. "That is the best avenue for parents to be involved," said Doug Senuik, a retired teacher who added he's worried the school's principal has not been following rules under the School Act when it comes to giving parents notice about such meetings. It sends a message to me that he does not want the parents to be informed, he does not want a school council to exist," said Senuik, a former member of the Ross Sheppard faculty who has launched a formal complaint with the school board.
  20. Wait till you start teaching I know of way to many teachers totally frustrated by this policy. Students drift by the classroom, wanders in with iphone, read iphone, start laughing with others on iphone, test assignment ignored, gets up walks out of class, heads over to sidewide beside school. Lights cigarette.
  21. It could have been continued in any one of the existing threads. Its not UNRELATED to the position taken by the fired teacher. Its not a NEW topic. You might not get it either. You happen to be threading the needle on forum ettiquette. Its about being respectful to others and to MLW. We now have 3 threads on this topic. It happens, however it normally happens when someone else starts a topic on a similar subject unknowingly. Its no harm done. Its simply something to consider when posting on MLW.
  22. When one speaks logically and makes valid points, their is little to add or discuss. Consider it a complement.
  23. The so called 'Real World' is a term many University Students use to describe that they have spent their entire life within the educational institution, and have not experienced a life or lifestyle outside of this experience. Some students use this as a release of fear or stress or just a joke. Such as, When I Graduate and enter the Real World. That said, one would expect that anyone who goes from JK, to K, to Elemetary, to Highschool, to University, to teachers College , and back to one of the mentioned educational bodies above, has experienced a specialized and limited working environment. One could also make the suggestion that that experience is one not experienced by the vast majority of those who leave the confines of educational security. Why are you so rude to everyone?
  24. Nice response to Mr. Hardener. A person who received the position of Facilator of these forums for all the reason you have listed above. Free Speech allows one to sound like an idiot . Unimpeded. Seeing as Mr. Hardener has not suppressed your thoughtful and considerate postings, I would say free speech is alive and well on MLW.
