  1. I don't think you can really explain Canadians or Americans. I think you lose something in trying to define the differences. But I do think they are there. It may sound like a cop out to say that I think we do have a distinct culture without making any effort to define it, but I do think each nation has its own flavor, even in something as seemingly similar as contemporary music. For instance, I think Canadian and American bands have distinct sounds from each other. I think Canada has its own....feeling.
  2. USA has a good shot at gold. As good as anyone there.
  3. I for one did not go in expecting Canada to win this game. I think Canada outplayed USA tonight, but I was actually surprised at that fact. USA has a great team on paper, and very speedy as well. The game is definitely the most popular sport here. But I would argue that it is not a national obsession. I think that's an exaggerated image, and one that we Canadians often play up ourselves. I think USA has a good shot at the gold in hockey as well, but I am not predicting it exactly. Canada, Russia, USA and Sweden all have such talented line ups that I could see any of them getting it. All depends on the momentum of each game at this point.
  4. Meh, didnt find that funny either. And for the record I don't find Tina Fey funny. I don't find many comedians funny.
  5. I don't know whether there is a stereotype of this or not. I am not trying to make it be one. But that's irrelevant to the relative sexism of the comment. No one would complain over typical man.
  6. I would disagree. She is just outlining which topics she wants to cover. How is that so pathetic? I understand completely what you are saying, but I think there is something dishonest in your argument, though I am not well able to articulate it.
  7. If you assert that it is apple and oranges you can no longer say it is more pathetic. And there is no cheat sheet, she was not taking an exam. And I don't think those were answers to questions at the Q % A.
  8. Even so. I would say by proportion that is still less help.
  9. Not that I care who needs more help, but if two people are getting help making a speech the one who has the entire thing written out for him is obviously getting more help then the one who has three or four words on her hand.
  10. Seems appropriate with that last name.
  11. But the entire speech includes the general concepts, not to mention the entire speech.
  12. That might have more to do with how much flack you would face over saying "nigger". Even when discussing the term itself on television journalists will not say it but refer to it as the "N" word. I don't think this is because it's any worse, but because of the backlash you would receive for it. But yeah I think Palin was out of line calling for him to be fired over it. Just playing the game for political advantage perhaps. I dunno.
  13. That makes no sense. If notes on a hand are a cheat sheet, then a teleprompter is 10 fold.
  14. If I don't ask for directions I'm a typical man. Whoop dee doodle. A few notes on hand is no comparison to a teleprompter. Anyone who finds it hilarious is trying to find it hilarious.
  15. I believe in freedom. So I think if the government were to ban the book it would be a violation of freedom of speech. But Chapters is not violating that. They own their stores, and they ought to have the freedom to carry which books they want for whatever reasons they want.
  16. If that's how you feel about it you should do something about it. No one can visit their conscience on someone else. Open your own wallet.
  17. You are missing the point of what he was saying. He is not offended that there were natives or anything else. He was pointing out that a microscopic faction of the population had a large part to play in the entire thing. I don't think this particularly offends anyone. Or that anyone feels left out by it or is really complaining. I think it actually just looks kinda cheesy after a certain point. It smacks of "trying to look" enlightened and cultural and tolerant, as does your criticism of this persons forum post, as if you are the hero for calling someone out on something.
  18. The unplanned moment when the cauldron did not rise and you see the torch lighters down there waiting and smiling like "OH man can you believe this?" And then they finish it anyways. That's Canada right there. Rest of the show. Blahhhhh
  19. Something that had something to do with the Prairies for instance. The visual effects were great. But I think the ceremony was cheesy as a whole. I usually feel this way about these shows in general. I'm not sure if it was good or bad, but I would not describe it as representative of the average Canadian or the daily Canadian experience. I also find it somewhat annoying how we Canadians often toot our own horns about how wonderfully polite we are. They do say please and thank you elsewhere.
  20. I disagree with this statement. Maybe I'm alone here but I don't think it showed anything about who we are. But then who knows, maybe all those people who grew up the prairies watched that guy floating through the air on a string over a nonsensical light show and soft jazz and thought "Yes Yes, this is what its like to grow up in the Canadian prairies."
  21. I think the subtitles should have been used to clear up the accent of the main character. I actually understood the aliens better.
  22. The point of that scripture being that you should not pray simply to be seen. Not literally that one ought not to pray in public with fellow christians. Nowhere does it say it should be a private matter.
  23. How does that mean he did not believe it? There was a little more to it than that, if you are counting words. But essentially there is no information in that memo which highlights anything similar to the 9/11 attack, except for the word "attack". That's not a lot to go on Guyser. Without a place (could be anywhere) or a time (could have been planned for 2008), that memo was as about as useful as no memo at all. It's like if I sent a message to the Israeli government saying "Palestinian Group plans to attack Israeli citizens somewhere, someday."
  24. Didn't know what? What was not in the PDB? All it said was that Bin Laden was determined to attack America. Well, duh. That was not new information. Based on that, Bush could have, I suppose, ordered the construction of an impenetrable dome over the whole of the United States.
