  1. Freedom of expression and association are natural rights, but they don't include an obligation that others must pay for your expression or provide you with employment.
  2. Wow, all by yourself, or with a few more peaceful brethren?
  3. My answer is not there. Well not exactly. I say Oswald pulled the trigger. But he was not acting as a lone nut. He was KGB. A lot of people say he was CIA because of how easily he was allowed to return to the US after his defection, but it was policy at the time to bring back defectors who were still citizens. I say KGB based on the fact that Yuri Nosenko made it a point to say he wasn't.

  5. CoR Party. Confederation of Regions
  6. In some cases (in certain respects) I think NB Liberals have been more conservative than a lot of conservatives. Frank McKenna was pretty socially conservative. Politics here can be confusing.
  7. I like the arts. I also support cuts to government funding to the arts. I don't think that is conflicting. Art and money....two different things. Artists who think they are entitled to tax payers money do not earn my respect. There is nothing free or artistic about such people. Back to the main topic, I don't see what difference it makes whether Mr. Harper does a cameo or not. Nicky seems so concerned about how this fellow uses his time as PM. I am sure he is aware that all political leaders have spare time and that not all of their daily activities have political purpose. What difference does it make if he uses some of that spare time to do a cameo? Is the issue for Nicky the amount of spare time these fellows have (a legitimate concern) or the cameo itself?
  8. Well I know what you mean about the architecture stuff. I don't understand it and I have a hard time picturing it. I usually find writing which is spacially descriptive (even if it requires no expertise) to be hard to convert to an image in my head. I don't skip reading those parts, but I don't bother about it when I can't grasp it. I actually do like the characters, though I suppose that they are pretty harsh, but you know those were tough times. I think what I really like about this book is its structure (well so far). It's got several story lines which all support one another in the grand scheme. Like counterpoint in music. Not only that but each of those story lines is made up of smaller stories. So that even if I just read a little bit everyday I feel like I have read a short story. And I also kinda like historical fiction.
  9. Reading Pillars of The Earth by Ken Follett right now. About halfway through. Really enjoying this book.
  10. I think he knows that. He just said he liked Road to Avonlea because he also liked the Waltons.
  11. Hockey Night In Canada
  12. Losing the vote seems like a compliment to me.
  13. I noticed this title at the library this morning and passed over it. Seems like something I might like. I'll have to check it out.
  14. Currently reading: The Lives of The Great Composers by Harold C. Schonberg Baudolino by Umberto Eco Recommend: The Last Jew by Noah Gordon - story of a young Jewish boy who flees his home during the Spanish Inquisition The Physician by Noah Gordon - orphaned boy in medieval England is apprenticed to a barber surgeon and later travels to Persia to study under Avicenna and become a real physician. A Leaven of Malice - Robertson Davies
  15. Conservatism is in the eye of the beholder. I am not sure if I find Conservatives in Canada to be all that conservative-leaning. But to hear some people tell it, Harper is a bible-thumping, fascist Nazi and Canada has been a theocracy since 2006.
  16. A lot of people think CBC spins stuff. Who decides who is spinning too much? Aside from that it is the media which has dubbed it Fox News North. Even if it is. What's wrong with that?
  17. I have never fired a gun period. I live in a rural area though. And growing up around here most houses had guns in them. We had guns. Long guns, that is. And I haven't met anyone who goes around firin' off shots and screaming "Yeehaw!" Hunting in the fall is pretty traditional around here. I was practically the only guy in my school who did not take off the morning of October 1st for the 1st day of duck hunting. It is something a lot of urban people (not all) seem so distanced from. Almost like two different worlds in some ways. I've seen shocked reactions from some Ontario friends when you tell them you have guns in your house. But it's not uncommon here. Even for people who do not use them. Family members would pass guns on. Father to son. Or even sometimes friends give them away. That may seem odd to some people, but no one is using them to shoot up the neighbourhood. It's basically like making a gift of a fishing rod.
  18. What's the ratio of people with those signs to tea party rally attendants?
  19. I don't feel a need to. People of all races are welcome to attend. There is nothing racist about their rally. The tea party is about less taxes, smaller government etc. Why don't more people of a particular race support it? I do not know. Who cares? Either you support it or you don't. Finding out that a certain demographic does not support something is not a reason to stop supporting something you believe in.
  20. Who says that because few blacks attended that this means MLK would not have believed in many of the ideals of the rally? Do all blacks think alike, Waldo?
  21. What difference does it make how many black people there were? People of all races are welcome to attend, I am sure. Nitpicking about racial numbers is a distraction from the issue.
  22. I don't understand why this is an issue anyways - how many people of a certain race attended. People who support the ideals of the rally attended. Whether or not they happen to be black or not is irrelevant. They are not keeping black people out of the rally, I am sure. And the message is not a racist one.
  23. Leif Eriksson. Erik was his father. Discovered Greenland I think. Some people speculate that Irish monk St. Brendan was here earlier than that.
  24. How should I know? No one does. You might think you can make a good guess. You may be right. What right do you have to tell the owner of a business who would willingly hire me he cannot employ me because I am not union, and that I cannot work there because I do not belong to your club? That is the question! Ah anyways we will leave this one for another day. Enjoy your football Jack
  25. Who says I am thinking of leaving any community or breaking any law? I am simply arguing in favor of allowing people to attain certain positions without being required to join a union. Employers should be able to make a contract with anyone. And anyone should be able to accept. So for instance I am not talking about leaving a union. I am talking about being a member of the political community who advocates for this freedom, all the meanwhile lawfully going about my business.
