Don't hold your breath. As I recall, the Reform Party opted out. Then they opted back in. Why would you expect the latest batch of Conservatives to be less selfish than their Reform predecessors (or Liberals)? Than you are recalling wrong, unless you are deliberately baiting. The Reform MP's opted back in because Chretien passed legislation making it mandatory - they didn't have a choice. But I suspect you know that. -
So why did Harper vote against C-250 if he's not a religious nut? Did you not read what I said, one doesn't have to be religious to be against it, if it makes you happy to reinforce your views with repetition - go for it. Whatever turns you on So why did Harper vote against C-250? For the last time, go back and read what others have written explaining it to you, you obviously havn't read any of them, or you deliberately baiting, I'm not going back to look them up, but its been explained over and over again. However, if it makes you happy to re-inforce your illusions with repetition - whatever turns your crank..

I'm not religious at all and neither is my husband, we are against pot, and changing the traditional definition of marriage. That doesn't mean I hate homosexuals, I don't, they can have marriage and all the benefits, just leave the traditional definition alone. The reasoning behind voting against C-250 has has been explained to you repeatedly so if you choose to continue twisting it around and makes you happy to think that then go for it - but that horse don't hunt. Personally I'm pro choice so where does and I consider myself to be a fiscal conservative. Stereotyping people as 'religious nuts' and suggesting they hate someone simply because they disagree with you is ridiculous, people can come to conclusions and opinions based on reason. Harper has never to my knowledge made any kind of religious statements, I've no idea what or if or how often he attends church and I don't care - its his business. I don't go to church but I respect the view of those who do and leave them to it without labelling them for choosing to believe whatever they do. I also respect the right of people to have a voice in parliament and participate in our democracy. Its this type of rhetoric and pigeon holing that helped the liberals lose the election.

Hefty pensions ease Grit fall

Most pensions are based on years of sevice and not payable until retirement age - lets hope eventually the CPC will do something about those gold plated pensions. -
Did you know that in Belinda's riding, Daddy bigbucks offered the Aurora Catholic church 6 acres of land free, because the present old church didn't have a parking lot. As well this goof ball Dorian Baxter who made himself a pastor, and does Elvis impersonations at his church services, also had to thank Mr BigBucks for a big donation to his church. Funny Dorion said people who couldn't vote for him, should vote for BS. Funny, sleaze & money seems to be able to beat class and ethics quite handily and I'm sure Daddy Bucks intends to have BS as the next leader and prime minister.

The Liberals would have fared better if they were deciminated. As it is, all the old Chretien and Martin wardogs are still in place, ready to go for each other's throats. The Auditors are going to be pouring through the books, and you can be sure that as much shredding as we'll hear about in the coming weeks, they'll find plenty of stuff on sitting Liberals. People for whom the Liberals were a tired old party in need of renewal are not going to be impressed by seeing the same old lineup of pompous incompetents. The only thing which has worked for the Liberals over the last four elections has been the fear card. . It would have been better had they been decimated, it might have taught them a lesson. I'll bet the shredders have just about done their work allready LOL -
No, I said the Liberal party is the one espousing the lies, hate and vitriole. And while we're at it I'll amend it to include stealing. Ordinary small 'l' liberals generally are much more civilized in my experience. IMO it is never wise to trust the people that broke it to fix it. We needed a new government for no other reason than to bring accountability and go as far as we can to purging Ottawa of the profiteering and scandal. If Harper can achieve no more than that and his crime bill under the current lineup of the house I'll be satisfied but not impressed. Right - Although I would hope he can achieve more than that, his accountability and ethics act should pass as the NDP are on board with that one.

I don't want to sound like a braggart but .... NOT ONLY did I shake his hand once, he also autographed a book for me once. Why the hell was he "duck and cover" there? Did he and Stephen kiss & make up? When? Is he going to help Harper now? Boy, the two of them sure would be a handful for Ignatieff. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if Ignatieff defected and joined their team. Harper, Ignatieff, Manning ..... what a dream team that would be. He just didn't want to talk to the media or make a big statement or anything it seemed. He wasn't really talking to anyone. He also send on an interview this morning that he'd be interested in helping out the Conservatives. So go Preston. That would be a dream team, ethics from Harper and Manning, and stylish good looks from Ignatieffmania. Me too: I met Manning a few times, have some pics of me with him...that guy has more integrity in his little finger than most of them. Its funny, religion, or Christophobia didn't seem to be an issue then, IMHO its a trickle down effect of the anti Bush/American sentiment. -

A recession is one thing that could mess up everything. A slow economy could be blamed on us and also make it difficult to follow through with all the promises. This is no small concern as the yield curve has become inverted in the United States and with 5 consecutive monthly rate increases by the Bank of Canada, I am very concerned that we may face a recession in 2006. -

Even if he has, politics demands he be lost. If Harper had a majority, leaving him there wouldn't matter. I doubt he would fire him right away, give him a chance to settle in first.... But it doesn't make political sense to leave an opposition member in that position, it would be a chance for the opposition to undermine any good work that Harper might do. Preston Manning....hnmm good choice -
Gee, I was just asking how many SSM-opposing Liberal MPs won. I don't care what your definition is. I don't want to bother debating about it....for we've done that already. I think if you scroll back and read the arguments posted you'll know that you can re-define it every which way you want....but it won't make any difference to the ones who share the same regard for its traditional value. Our own definition of it will always be upheld in our views, even though the government succeeded in making a mockery of it . Relax...no one is initiating any voting in parliament yet. I'm just curious here. I'm with you on this, I doubt there's anything more to say on it, and there's allready other threads going. There are a helluva lot more important issues to me than freaking SSM. I don't like it, but I have to learn to live with and get it on with more important issues (to me anyway).

I'll keep this in the same thread as its more voting irregularities. www.smalldeadanimals.com eremy Harrison is on radio right now over the results in the northern riding of Desnethe - Missinippi - Churchill River - He was ahead by 200 votes until the last ballot box came in and lo and behold - it had 300 votes for the LIberals. That poll that put Liberal candidate over the top did not came in until 3 hours after the polls had closed - some reserves had over 100% turnout - there was campaign literature in the polling stations, and polling booths - Liberal threats to aboriginal voters that they would not recieve cheques There is going to be an official request for an investigation. more: Advance Poll irregularities: poll clerks who refused to allow secret votes, who accompanied voters into the booths. Footnote: I heard a report last night that the NDP brought a busload of students into a rural poll in Vanscoy and had them all signed in to vote. -
So does anyone know how many liberals opposed to got in?

Don't know yet, I do know Tom Wappel was re-elected.

I would still like to know what a zealot is, or what anyone who uses that term really means, and who is really a religious zealot. This term as you say is inappropriate and is really used to manipulate and scare people. I know many people who are against SSM and abortion for that matter and are certainly not religious zealots, hell some have never set foot in a church for decades. These religious people do have a right to run for office, and I doubt that these are the only two issues they care about, and certainly Harper isn't running on anti-abortion - SSM yes, but one doesn't have to be a religious anything to be against that. Don't forget, its pretty well a 50 50 split on these issues, so many voters want someone who represents their views. I'm not entirely sure what is really wanted here, are people saying that only atheists should run for office, or is it only Christians who shouldn't run for office? What about Muslims, their religion is most definitly anti SSM/homosexuality, are they considered religious zealots, or again, does this only apply to Christians? Or, are they saying people who are anti-abortion/SSM shouldn't run for office? This is a very slippery slope when we start to define who and who should not be able to participate in a democracy. Most, if not the majority of people have some sort of religious belief, and necessarily Christian, as far as I'm concerned this 'religious zealot' thing is a crock, it is disengenuous in the least, and attempt to stiffle opposition and debate. Harper is no 'religious zealot' , but if someone repeats it often enough it becomes 'fact'. Goebels would be proud eh . cheers cheers

This is something that has to be looked into ASAP, if it happened in this riding its likely happening in others. Election Canada needs to do a full investigation and clean up those voter lists; a complete enumeration would be a start. -
Apparently the Liberals don't know the old saying: "Fool me once..." I'd like to think that the voters finally saw through the arrogance and corruption, but mainly do not buy into the campaign of fear mongering. IMHO I think that ad they pulled contributed. Fortunately Harper is a stellar and capable leader and will have similar people in his cabinet. This will be the opportunity to really show the voters how much the liberal campaign was based on innuendo, lies and fear. I think too that that voters are fed up with that kind of rhetoric. We have interesting times ahead, but it would be nice to take a breather for a while and coast -
-
Hi and welcome: I would say Ignatief and Stronach will be key players, but I think B. Tobin would be a good bet if they can persuade him to run.
-
Remember that a large portion of Liberals dont' support it, and niether does a handful of Bloc Quebecois. The NDP has already shown themselves intolerant of free-thought by what they did to Bev so you can be assured they will all support SSM, if only to retain their position. One doesn't need to be religious to have morals or be for/against SSM, these can be based on reason alone. As someone in another thread said, there will be a free vote on the issue of whether or not to have another vote on SSM, and it will die, and that will be that. As for Harper being a 'religious nut' I don't get it, he has never to my knowledge worn his religion (whatever it is) on his sleeve, or made much comment (if at all ) about it, so how does one define 'religion nut' - is it anyone who goes to church or what? Scarborough re-elected Liberal Tom Wappel, he's a guarranteed vote against SSM. I don't think these slurs and innuendo will carry much weight next time around, they are allready a weakened position.
-
Very reasonable, that makes sense. I think fixed election dates will pass too, aren't the NDP on board with that one? As far as shovelling money out of a truck, Martin did better at than than Harper. I do expect the liberals in particular to be obstructionist
-
I agree pot is not and was never a key point of this election, and I don't think SSM really was either. Maybe someone could define a 'religious zealot' and explain why anyone with religious convictions shouldn't be allowed to run for office if they win the nomination process fair and square, and why a leader should deny these people a part in the democratic process. This is a democracy, they have a right to a voice as much as anyone else. I'm not religious, but darn it, I get bent out of shape when people try use the 'scary religious zealot' stuff. IMHO if a candidate is really off the wall, is really racist etc., the membership will not support them, and neither likely would the voters. Personally I believe the voters are finally realizing that this 'scary religious zealot' nonsense isn't cutting it.
-
Well, I think we did 'good', and I liked Martin's speech, he did well. For SNL fans http://whatelection.ytmnd.com/ I think that the CPC should push for their key policies while the opposition wants to avoid an early election, and the Liberals in particular are far in debt and facing a leadership race. They need to strike quickly and pass as much legislation as they can. This means, a free vote on SSM, scrap the gun registry, a cut to the GST, increased military spending (with an emphasis on arctic defence), and crime control. I think that Stephen Harper has a strong talent for compromise and that this can serve him well as a minority leader, I would have liked to have seen a stronger conservative party and a stronger mandate, but even given the current minority situation. the above issues should be brought to Parliament as a minimum. This is an opportunity to show the voters that the liberals and Martin were running nothing but a fear campaign while building their confidence and working towareds a majority next time around. cheers
