  1. Definitely time to get ride of the CBC.....go Harper.
  2. Harper had to move quickly and has. Eventually there will be a bigger change to the system as promised - free vote in parliament. The only people not in favour of change are the liberals who want the status quo and no accountability.
  3. Wow! Mapleleafwebs very own sect of right-wing extremists That be me! Personally I'd like the NDP to stick around. Jack's ideas and "I GET RESULTS!! PPPPLEEASE VOTE FOR ME!!" give me some great comic relief. Plus if I ever start a car dealership, I know who to hire. According to the Globe and Mail, the goal of the NDP, has always been to bring about realignment under its own auspices. Robin Sears, recently suggested on CBC Newsworld that the outcome of the election might result in a long-awaited coalescence of left and centre-left forces around the NDP, and a withering away of the Liberal Party. So, given that after 40 years they are still in fourth place and not much more of the popular vote, and considering they have abandoned some of their more radical left wing ideology, maybe they should merge with the liberals.
  4. That's not true. You can write into the law - as has been done with some - that first time and repeat offenders are treated differently. One of the problems with the current crop of judges is their inability to pass severe sentences. Take any sliding scale available to Canadian judges, say from 1 - 10 years, and examine the sentences handed out over the past, and you'll find 90% of sentences in the bottom third of the sentencing scale. I don't know if they've been discouraged from handing out severe sentences due to lack of space, or they're just a bunch of bleeding heart liberals appointed because of their affiliation with the Liberal Party of Canada, but I do know that we hardly ever get severe sentenes from them, no matter the severity of the crimes. Right on !!!!
  5. I hope he commits to it. That would send a strong message to the world that Canada promotes freedom and liberty. I was embarrassed when Paul Martin and Jack Layton were bragging - in the first debate - about not helping the Iraqis create a democracy, just days after they had turned out in droves to vote in a historic milestone election in the Middle East. I know Iraq is different than Afghanistan, but still...it sends a message to the world. Peter Mackay to terrorist group Hamas: Change stance or lose funding: But former PMPM told us that the Palestinian (displaced Arab) Authority were our friends... This is a good move by Harper and shows support for our troops and for democracy. I sure hope they 'review' the aid given to the PLO, I'm hoping they will cut off all aid until the new 'government' agrees to peace with Israel.
  6. Why? Does it require police to warn public if a gun owner is moving into the nieghborhood? Yup shooters definitely don't register their illegal weapons before. But that gets lost in some blind ignorance of the gun=always evil crowd. People fear gun owners more than sex offenders. -- The police officer that was shot in Quebec was killed by a gun a judge let the criminal have, and wasn't in the registry... The 4 mounties kill in Alberta, were killed by unregistered guns by a man that should have been in jailed for many years prior... The innocent kid that was shot in Toronto on Boxing day, by far one of the most henious crimes in the last little while, was not killed by a registered gun. IT DOESN'T WORK!! More police work. Real sentances work! 3 strikes and life in jail works! Arresting these teenage thug wanna-be gangsters and relocating them to work camps works! I'm ok with a background check and safety course for your PAL. This is reasonable. The registry however, is a complete farce. I sure hope you don't feel any safer knowing that maybe the registry has some farmers gun he uses to shoot pest animals! I hope your ok with the billions this has cost you! Good post. The problem is, people don't seem to understand the part about criminals not registering their guns - The CPC willl get a lot of support on this issue, a good move for them.
  7. Of course they are a set up and this is premeditated. All done by radicals to inflame tensions. Fortunately a Canadian group is making sense. Harper has every right and a duty to try and ease tensions, all part of the diplomatic process, however, I would have hoped he would take a firmer stand against the violence. http://www.asiamedia.ucla.edu/article.asp?parentid=39516 While police said Toronto's protest was peaceful and without incident -- as was another on Saturday in downtown Vancouver -- the Muslim Canadian Congress said the time has come for the demonstrations to stop because they are inflaming tensions around the world. Congress spokesman Tarek Fatah said the protests are being used by Islamic extremists as motivation to spread violence. "We understand the pain and the hurt of the Muslim community but I am urging Muslims around the world to understand the repercussions of their actions, that their pain has been usurped by Islamic extremists," he said. At least 45 people have died during protests around the world since the controversy erupted about three weeks ago.
  8. You bring up a good point of irrational hate for Harper. I find that those people have the same irrational hate for the U.S. Wilson is a good pick, he served under Mulroney who had good relations with the U.S., something we need to work at these days. Wilson's credentiols and his low ikey style makes him a good choice.
  9. Further to this and the idden motives behind cartoon riots, a number of people have died and property completely unrelated to this is trashed. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4716762.stm
  10. Progressive was a word coined prior to WW 1, to do with the period of reform.; I'm not sure how the left sees Progressive, but IMHO it is simply another word coined to indirectly accuse the right of being 'regressive' and to give their moment the perception of being better. There's a good article here on this: http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadA...le.asp?ID=15077 The man who is now virtually synonymous with Progressivism, Herbert Croly (The Promise of American Life), was himself both the son of a noted proponent of Comteian positivism and the student of Harvard's Josiah Royce, a disciple of Hegel. All of these thinkers contributed to what would become the ethical foundation of the Progressive Movement: a contempt and loathing of "individualism" -- and its political expression in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution:
  11. It's funny that the left is quicker to defend this set of beliefs. I actually can't see why. They should see Islamic oppression as a win for their supposed cause for dignity for women and minorities. Interesting eh? Could it be a marriage of convienience, political desperation makes for strange bedfellows, no? I find it strange too that the left will defend them while castigating Christians who today, (to my knowledge) don't stone women and all the other 'good stuff' the left seems to support.
  12. ALL people are equal some people are just better at doing things other peoples are not and visa versa!!!!!! Sad to say but they are not. Not all people have the same capabilities, some people have much higher IQs than other people, some people will always do better than others, thats humanity, we are not all born the same. We can provide equality of opportunity and publivc education, but we cannot provide equality of outcome. We we can provide a social safety net, but if we equalized all people at the same level, with no chance for improvement or financial success - then that is communism.
  13. Oh, not to mention the violence when they go rampaging and vandalising after a terrible loss! They've even indoctrinated their kids into this cult! Dads doing the religious training on their brats on every streets all over the city. I'm sick and tired of the bouncing ball repeatedly pounding the pavement outside my house. I looked out and observed this young boy just tossing and bouncing his ball.... non-stop...as if mesmerized...toss up and down, bounce, catch, toss up etc.,, I'd swear he was in a trance! Oh, they have their own "idols" alright. One of them is called "The Great One". And to make matters worse... alot of these cult-like sports fans are also religious Thank heavens. Most probably their saving glory. Ever watch the start of a Nascar race, lot of idiotical bru ha ha, bunch of Amaudons, I wait til the race has started to tune in. What is an Amaudon - do you mean automaton ?
  14. Your right, unfortunately some people seem to think America is always the bad guy because the hatred of Bush seems to colour their perception of anything else. When the U.S. suspends elections, the president declares himself - President for Life, the democrats and other parties quit campaigning I'll believe the U.S. has become totalitarian. Nothing the U.S. ever does is right in their eyes, I'd almost call it intolerance from the left. Democacy takes a long time to take hold and people have to want it, maybe they really prefer the nanny state idea and don't want to take responsibility, who knows.
  15. I was floored when I heard them turning a funeral into a political forum, Carter's gone right off the beam lately.
  16. Too bad Canada doesn't have the equivalent.
  17. Compared to the Liberals, whose devistatingly brilliant tactics yielded no results whatsoever. I've seen very few people actually defend Harper on this even conservatives are concerned. What I find astonishing is even though Harper did nothing illegal or against the rules, all of a sudden old Reform policies are acceptable e.g. recall an MP. Also interesting how everyone can justify Belinda's actions but not Emerson's. I'll get as indignant over Emerson when others get just as indignant over the other floor crossers and want them recalled.
  18. I agree that some sports have a definit cult like following, but mainstream religions are not 'cults' - that is simply not true. I would define a religious cult as : group members isolated from their family or society in general The group’s doctrine and belief focuses on the supernatural experiences of the group’s leader The group leader generally is still alive and the group is not very old and ar group members are not allowed to leave the organization.
  19. Screams for gun control usually come from the big coercive government liberal types. Why - because liberals are not lovers of freedom they believe that the average person is simply too ignorant to be free, that they need the guidance of big brother all the time. The registry's failure to address the criminal use of firearms and the gullibility of the general public who still support it is baffling. The registry is really another step into controling the citizens and has nothing to do with public safety. BTW I didn't see your post as 'attacking the poster'.
  20. The western media doesn't have the guts to stand up for freedom of speech. I'm supporting the Western Standard. BTW why so many threads on the same subject, can't answer them all.
  21. Europe will fall if it doesn't take a stronger stand, some countries are starting to wake up - we hope. In France, hard-line Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, who in October characterized France's urban rioters as "rabble," will require non-European immigrants to sign a new "Contract of Welcome and Integration" that spells out their obligations. Among other reforms, the French government will be free to expel immigrants after 10 years. Insular Muslim communities -- commonplace today -- are outlawed. For immigrants to stay, they will have to demonstrate respect for French norms, such as equality between men and women. "If a wife is kept hostage at home without learning French, the whole family will be asked to leave [the country]," said Mr. Sarkozy, who proposes to rank countries to determine the desirability of their immigrants. http://www.premier-ministre.gouv.fr/en/inf...e-on_54514.html Danish migration rules target Muslims Wednesday 18 February 2004, 9:18 Makka Time, 6:18 GMT http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/A36...6B9B8F304E8.htm Danish PM Anders Rasmussen has announced various changes to immigration aimed at curbing the number of Muslim leaders allowed into the country. Germans argue over integration By Ray Furlong BBC News, Berlin http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4056109.stm Decades of consensus about a multicultural society have been thrown into question recently as leading German politicians suggest that minorities living in the country need to do more to fit in. "The notion of multiculturalism has fallen apart," said opposition conservative leader Angela Merkel in a recent interview. "Anyone coming here must respect our constitution and tolerate our Western and Christian roots." TNetherlands: http://www.expatica.com/source/site_articl...ion+law%3A+2005 MVV visa and integration (inburgering) test abroad A proposal regarding the integration law for foreigners abroad has been presented to the parliament which is supposed to enter into force next year. According to this proposal, nationals not exempted from the MVV requirement and willing to come to the Netherlands on a permanent basis should take an integration test abroad as one the requirements to obtain an MVV. Knowledge migrants, their families, au pairs and students will be exempted of this requirement.
  22. Well, the media is applauding the the rest of Harper's appointments. Some are even pointing out that until the new rules on Ethics are in place...Harper had not broken anything by doing what the other parties had been normally doing. And they couldn't get enough of Wilson's being the ambassador to the US! Especially when Washington pundits say Bush administration actually wants Harper to succeed in his endeavors....so they're counting on positive results on Softwood, and border crossings. That should alleviate some depressions over rising job loss rate. It sure will when the Americans control all our lumber, get rid of the unions and relegate Canadians to minimum wage jobs or lower. Huh ! What planet are you on?
  23. Good post. Calling people names is simply a club to stifle dissent, and while we need to show respect for other people's beliefs, even if we find them simply ridiculous. However, there is more at work here, particularly in Europe. This is a very good article http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/financi...55-3904297e45de Cultures collide: Muslim immigrants will be expelled from Europe unless they reverse the growing perception of them as a social threat Young Muslims protest French government policy. French tolerance is waning. Published: Friday, February 17, 2006 The Muslims refused to assimilate. They were expelled. This was the story in Europe 400 years ago. We are watching the sequel today. -snip- In the clash of cultures between secular Europeans and extremist Muslims, there can ultimately be no compatibility or compromise, only loss by one side or the other of the absolute values it holds dear. European capitulation on European soil, where they remain the dominant majority, is unlikely: Europeans revel in their liberty to mock religion, to poke fun at sacred cows, to be outrageous, even to offend. European leaders have reacted to the Muslim upset over the cartoons two ways. Publically and to buy time, they seek to calm the protesters by deploring the abuse of freedom of speech. More significantly, they seek to preserve their societies by legislating Western norms, by tightening or ending immigration from Muslim countries, by enabling the expulsion of radical imans and other Muslim activists, and by raising the spectre of mass deportations. The Danes have brought in immigration laws that are stricter still, all but ending their liberal refugee program and discouraging even temporary workers. In the wake of the cartoon riots, many in Denmark, including those in government, want to see an outright ban on Muslim immigration and to have radical leaders stripped of citizenship and deported. To preserve home-grown values, Danish Minister for Cultural Affairs Brian Mikkelsen recently called for the creation of a "canon of Danish art, music, literature and film." Last summer, he stated that, "In Denmark we have seen the appearance of a parallel society in which minorities practice their own medieval values and undemocratic views," adding that, "This is the new front in our cultural war." In Germany, which pioneered the guest-worker program in Europe, a sea change has occurred. "Multicultural societies have only ... functioned peacefully in authoritarian states. To that extent it was a mistake for us to bring guest workers from foreign cultures into the country at the beginning of the 1960s," said former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt. Germany's new Chancellor, Angela Merkel, shares his view: "The notion of multiculturalism has fallen apart," she said prior to her election. "Anyone coming here must respect our constitution and tolerate our Western and Christian roots." more on page 2
  24. So now we know who really controlled Harper. A lot of Mulroney and some of Harris's main men are surfacing. All I can say is the Canadians are pretty nieve. Hmmm, methinks the naivette is on the part of those who think anyone 'controls' Harper, wonder who 'controled' Martin or Chretien. Odd terminology at best.
  25. No one has ever said people should not be helped, and as I said most agree with a social safety net. What they don't agree with is welfare for life for able bodied people. Nor do they agree with all people being equally poor, but to compare Canada with France is assinine. "The best form of welfare is a job"
