I suspect the teacher had an agenda, either way it must of been agony for the kids cos as far as I'm concerned it was booorrring.... The part that bothered me was the fact that the movie appears to condone lying, cheating and infidelity. The wifes and kids were just so much collateral damage I suppose.

You're saying Bush, America, and Harper are deranged? How hateful of you. Nice try, but no cigar -

Oh you kids with your zany acronyms. WTF? LOL? Uh, you are aware that the vast majority of people in Afghanistan would qualify as "Islamic fundamentalists" right? Gee I wish I were a kid.... BFR is Bush Derangement Syndrome and ADR is America Derangement Syndrome, guess what HDR is....LOL Your right, I should have said radical Islamists who would deny women schooling etc. -

That is something I can't reconcile. Those who want our troops out of Afghanistan are more than willing to put our troops in harms way in another hostile area that doesn't want Western interference. How do they explaint that? -

Further to this, there are many who would take this opportunity to make Afghanistan Harper's Iraq, which is part of the push. Pulling out of Afgh. now is playing right into the hands of Islamic fundamentalists who want nothing more than to destroy Afghan democracy. -

They want Canada to be isolationist, they don't care what happens to the people, especially the women if we pull out. They view Canada as strictly peacekeepers, but ignore the fact that the soldiers carry guns and actually use them on peace keeping missions. IMHO, its part of BDR and ADR, it all ties in to the paranoia about Bush, they just can't get past it. I do agree that Canada is shouldering too much of the burden. If NATO doesn't supply more troops etc. for the heavy lifting in the same area we are, then I think that would be justifiction for pulling out of that area, and sticking to re-building efforts. Canada can't do it all on their own. Thanks for your work and effort in helping these people - kudos. -
Israel is not an apartheid State, Jews are a majority, but the Arab minority are full citizens with voting rights and representation in the government. Under apartheid black South Africans could not vote and were not citizens of the country in which they are the overwhelming majority of the population. The Palestinian erritories—won by Israel in a defensive war —is different. The security requirements of the force restrictions, no country in their right mind would allow free access to Israel itself. Gee, Palestinians in that area undeniably dispute Israel’s right to exist. and work at it.

No, I don't well know that, I know that at the time, it was reported that the journalists were urging them. Israel doesn't come close to the hate and brainwashing of children Hamas. I do know that childrenare residents of Kiryat Shmona, which is right on the border with Lebanon On the day that photo was taken, the girls had emerged from the underground bomb shelters for the first time in five days. A new army unit had just arrived in the town and was preparing to shell the area across the border. The unit attracted the attention of twelve photojournalists - Israeli and foreign. The girls and their families gathered around to check out the big attraction in the small town - foreigners. and so on They havn't pulled the MM character, http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/155262.aspx nothing unusual, they have a habit of promising to do it, but when the furor dies down, on they go. The LA Times was calling on Disney to sue Hamas for its use of Mickey- gee does that mean its okay to teach hatred as long as you don't use our sacred symbols to do it? Hamas didn't do anything of significance it didn't do in the past - or will do in the future. Preaching hatred to kids didn't start with Farfur, nor will it end when he is gone. It will just go back to sneak under the radar screen. Only reason this got any attention was the blatant Disney piece. The numerous other kid's shows with similar messages, or the kiddie websites telling young Pals their obligation will be to take back Spain, or the music videos recruiting teenage suicide bombers, are still on. In the past they have 'officially' pulled such crap when it attracts wide media attention, then quietly put it back on the air six months or a year later. Oh yes -- it's also in all the school textbooks http://haaretz.com/hasen/spages/857709.html "You and I are laying the foundation for a world led by Islamists," the cartoon character named Farfour squeaked on a recent episode of the show, entitled "Tomorrow's Pioneers."
-
Exactly, they refuse to acknowledge the facts and their silence regarding Hamas et al terrorism and barbaric acts has one wondering if they actually condone them.
-
Is there any evidence of this practice? I read about it that one time, and found that the kids where doing at the urging of surrounding journalists. Certainly what they did, and what is taught in Israel has no comparison to the stated aim of their neighbours - you know - that little thing they want to do called genocide. Only irrational people would support Hamas and their practices. Welcome to Dizzyland where everything is upside down. Welcome to AK`s R Us where you can purchase an AK47 for your son and welcome to Martyrs Vineyard where you can see your children die for some silly ideals. Contrast all this with the sad faces on the sad Palestinian victims who suffer with the Israeli brutes. Is it a Khartoum or Cartoon, only the shadow knows for sure.... Stay tuned while we explain how one looks like a victim while one blows oneself up.

Sigh, we are not allowed to post the whole thing, you know that. Either way, it could pave the way for other people to go after sperm donors. -
I'm with the family on this one, its an R rated movie, should not be shown in a classroom, never mind to a 12 year old. At least there should have been parental permission. Family of girl, 12, sues after 'Brokeback' shown in class http://www.suntimes.com/news/education/383...broke13.article May 13, 2007 FROM SUN-TIMES WIRES A suit was filed on behalf of a 12-year-old girl who claims she suffered psychological distress when a teacher showed in class the gay-themed movie "Brokeback Mountain." The girl, Jessica Turner, and her grandparents Kenneth and LaVerne Richardson, are seeking more than $400,000 in damages under the suit filed Friday against the Chicago Board of Education and others. According to the suit, a substitute teacher introduced herself as Ms. Buford to Jessica's class at Ashburn Community Elementary School, 8300 S. St. Louis Ave. She then said, "What happens in Ms. Buford's class stays in Ms. Buford's class," the suit claims. Buford then had a student close the door, and started showing the controversial R-rated film, which features two men engaged in sex. The suit alleges Ashburn's principal, Jewel A. Diaz, was aware that the tale of the love between two cowboys set in the West of the 1960s was being shown to the minors. Turner later told her grandfather that she was confined to her seat and felt she could not leave the room, according to the suit filed in Cook County Circuit Court.....

Like I said, comparing Harper with Bush is stereotyping for polemic reasons. -
Hmmm, will have to look into it, doesn't hurt to have a source other than wikki, I always wondered about some their info. http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional...ticleid=1000968 “Tired of the LIBERAL BIAS every time you search on Google and a Wikipedia page appears? Our study suggests that Wikipedia is 6 times more liberal than the American public. Now it’s time for the Conservatives to get our voice out on the internet!” So begins the rallying cry for Conservapedia.com, aspiring right-leaning rival to Wikipedia.org - the online encyclopedia project that now claims 7.2 million articles in 251 languages and traffic that ranks it among the world’s top 15 sites. Wikipedia is adamant about striving to maintain a “neutral point of view.” But because it is “written collaboratively by volunteers from all around the world,” the site acknowledges that “critics have questioned Wikipedia’s reliability and accuracy.” Enter Conservapedia. “We don’t make false claims of neutrality, as Wikipedia does,” it asserts. Instead this self-described “Trustworthy Encyclopedia” offers fair-and-balanced versions of Wikipedia articles in a format intelligently designed to evoke the look of Wikipedia. http://www.conservapedia.com/Main_Page

What is clearly missing from all this is the fact that this is a minority gov't, it changes how a party governs but no one seems to consider that. If they tried to govern as if they had a majority there would have been an election by now. The gov't has to try to appease everyone, they have to try to keep savage dogs at bay (well watch question period - ) and so far they've done a good job at it. -
Enough radical Islamist groups have threatened the west and our way of life to cause concern. While the majority of approx. 1.2 billion muslims may be peaceful, even if only 10% are of the radical variety, that is enough to do the job and don't forget the radicals have declared their intentions of a world wide Caliphate. At least one of these groups has been banned in Britain. Take a look at what is happening in Europe and even Australia. Much of what is happening in Europe is not reported here by the MSM. Islam is the fastest growing religion, if it becomes the majority religion in the west, then we would see parliament change, and laws changed, we would see Sharia law implemented. We do have cause for concern, especially women.

Fiscal Conservatism v. Social Conservatism
scribblet replied to August1991's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
There was a furor, at least over Terri ( remember that one in the U.S.) the parents had Terry Randall advocating for them in the news and other anti abortionists. I didn't though, see any fuss very recently over the plug being pulled on the teenager who was injured after a game here. No vigils with candles over pulling the plug on him. I consider myself a fiscal conservative, I'm pro choice with limits on late term. I must say that my thoughts about late term has been lowered as I get older. I used to consider late term the last three months, now I consider it to be after 4 months. I have no problem with public funding for abortions, but maybe with limits on that too e.g. the public will pay for the first one only. Harper knows what the abortion issue would do to the country, he's smart not allowing discussion, or his cabinet to the rallies. harper has never been comfortable with the socialist cons. label, and has always been a policy wonk, some think he has libertarian leanings and has said he does not believe in imposing his values on others. Having said this, the groups who are rabidly anti abortion will never give it up, no matter what legislation might be passed or upheld, they will always fight it, and that includes Liberals, they have them too. That I suppose is what a democracy is all about, we are all entitled to our views and a voice, we all want to be heard. -

qquote] Gee, I don't know. Maybe because the similarities are uncanny. Why are they similarities only uncanny to the left? That's about it, there are not that many similarities to the U.S. right - in fact, Canadian conservatives are more akin to the U.S. democrats. Any suggestion that they are closer to the republicans is indeed playing to the anti U.S. faction. -
Apparantly the government is using Quebec as its benchmark, with the aim of having other provinces achieve a similar level of representation enjoyed by Quebec. I suppose we should be even stephen huh Even if this isn't passed, the three largest provinces will still be scheduled to gain more seats after the 2011 census under the existing formula. Ontario - + four seats, British Columbia +1 Alberta +1

It may seem that the CPC is not as committed to Reform type changes - well take a look at the HoC, add them all together and there's still a majority who are not committed to fiscal responsibility or meaningful changes. Its a minority gov't in case anyone has forgotton. The real test will be when the get a majority and if they then follow through with meaningful legislation. Given the constraints of parliament i.e. a minority, Harper has done very well. Even when citing polls we need to know when questions were asked. I bet if people were asked: “Would you rather have more money in your pocket, or in the hands of a bureaucrat or politician?” You'd get a majority positive response. Even with a majority you won't see any anti abortion legislation coming down the pipe, Harper knows full well that it will divide the country, only a fringe element are bent on pushing that agenda. Take a look at the website mentioned in the article (FD) check out postings by a lunatic Whatcott - now there's a good example of the lunatic fringe. No way does he or his followers represent even an iota of conservatives. -
I doubt that it is anything to do with empire building, more likely money, they'd make less.
