Canada signs free-trade agreement with Colombia

No, when they export bananas here, they won't have to pay tariffs on them which results in their banana farmers getting a better return for their product. Same goes for other industries. This is how people make money. -

Judges answer to people higher on the food chain eg the supreme court. Worst case scenario is they are over ruled. No firing at all. Which is ridiculous, make outlandish rulings and get canned. The beauty of a democracy is being able to fire those in charge, the judiciary should not be an exception. Although that's for the politicians to do the firing. Ah that's the thing, the electorate does have power, they elect politicians who pick judges and in a democracy the electorate is never wrong. Judges shouldn't be elected, but should also be able to be fired by the same people who hired them, which is politicians. And who do politicians answer to? Having people who can't be fired results in corruption and abuse of power far beyond election shenanigans. Job performance is an issue as well, if the electorate is pressuring politicians to do something about the judiciary then heads should roll, thats how a democracy should work. -

Judges should however be accountable. They should be able to get fired like anybody else. So because a judge isn't elected it's impossible to be corrupt? Is everybody rich in that dreamland of yours? Do a shitty job and get canned like everyone else. -
New laws for young drivers?

Or we could have people smarten up and save a boatload of money!!! As for GPS, I am far more familiar with it's applications than you are. My machinery is all on GPS autosteer, that means after I make a line they can drive themselves and the operator carries out the other machine functions. However it is not as accurate enough to be utilized for on road autosteer applications at those speeds. Then there is weather conditions. For GPS autosteer in cars, the accuracy needed would have to be more accurate than current sub inch accuracy. That other idea with cars above the roads already exists, its called a train. -

The fat guy can plug up the aisle, when in the possible scenario of an evacuation poses a problem. I'm not saying my right to life is more important than his right to life, my right to life is more important than his "right" to fly. These people don't plug up aisles like fat people do and don't screw people out of seats. The people your listing now cannot help their situation. A morbidly obese person can. August was right, why should society pay for an individual's stupidity. I'm not talking about a 200+ pounder, I'm talking about the ones that have gone way too far. -

Did high gas prices trigger a global recession?
blueblood replied to Wild Bill's topic in Business and Economy
shell Can you provide a source that shows the energy companies don't participate in innovation. They do have something, the Alberta oilsands were until now been heavily invested into, shareholders got richer which means better for retirement earnings. The gnomes can't pump liquidity because the Americans took your stupid socialist advice and forced banks to loan money to people who can't pay their bills instead of big companies and people that can pay their bills. The banks ran out of money and voila the crisis. -

Innovation? Have you not heard of horizontal drilling and offshore oil platforms? That sounds pretty innovative to me. That's where a lot of their profits go is coming up with new ways to explore and drill as well. Other innovation includes biofuels, and all the small business's that benefit from the oil patch. Lots of innovation, time to leave Ontario. Don't worry in a couple of years things will be back to normal and the energy industry will be back to figuring out ways to satisfy energy needs for the growing world. -

I don't know, if I'm on a plane and for whatever reason there needs to be an emergency evacuation, my right to life trumps fat ass's right to fly. They discriminate people from bringing hair gel on a plane, either ditch the gel or your ass stays on the ground. A person who is morbidly obese poses a bigger threat than a person carrying beauty products. I'd say the same for the broken leg, and the person being transported in handcuffs the RCMP has planes themselves. I'm with August on this one. -

Wouldn't having morbidly obese people on an airplane be a safety hazard to those on board. They're lucky even to be let on airplanes let alone getting a bloody discount. That is discriminating against the other person who doesn't get the seat, what about his rights? This ridiculous ruling makes as much sense as a farmer going to the supreme court and successfully arguing that he should be allowed to bring a jackknife on the plane because of cultural reasons and for him not to would be discrimination (hypothetically speaking of course). Air travel is a privilege, not a right. -
Those old battleships are fitted with some missiles, plus their big guns. That should be sufficient to deal with the pirates and their bases. In WW2, the most massive battleships were used to deal with light shipping. The Ticonderogas are far more suited to conventional warfare and shouldn't be wasted dealing with that.

2009 Deficit could hit $14 billion
blueblood replied to BC_chick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Inputs are dropping as well, fertilizer has been taking massive hits. I am however surprised Canola is staying at its levels now instead of dropping further considering its status as a luxury crop. All the ag analysts say we are one weather phenomenon away from very high prices (adjusted for today's times) As the stock market crashed Canola has held around this level for about a month, crude oil has not held this steady. Harper took a gamble and it looks like it's backfiring on him. I understand the logic behind his decision and am giving him a pass on it. We will be seeing a number of these minorities for some time. We already have seen Harper's intentions in that report posted earlier, probable minor deficits with modest surpluses in two years. The key is, can Harper survive when we return to surpluses? Harper has tried to make cuts, he has been met with backlash every single time and this is in areas where he needs to make inroads. Perhaps he shouldn't have been vocal about making cuts in an election campaign, his mistake. -
The Ticonderoga's are almost too high tech for pirate boats, plus they are needed elsewhere with credible naval threats ie china, iran, russia, etc. Let the obsolete battleships go after the pirates, they have low hours, and guns that fire cheap ammo. A cruise missile takes a cool million bucks to fire. Even though the USS Missouri is fitted with them. Nothing like a ship with 16 inch guns conducting battery drills off the coast of Eyl to garner some attention...

2009 Deficit could hit $14 billion
blueblood replied to BC_chick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Canola was 750 dollars per tonne in the spring time. It came down by over 300 dollars per tonne. That's significant enough. I'm surprised canola is as high as it is for not being an essential crop. People do need to eat and there are a lot of mouths to feed. Minority parliaments = high spending in order to buy votes, that's politics. In a majority situation, I think we know Harper would do different and would probably wait until the bitter end to call an election in tough economic times. Cut civil services and their wages would bring down costs as well. -

your the one that said the Liberals cut spending, now they didn't? The Libs didn't cut the GST and allowed for high income taxes on top of it. harper managed things alright, more canadians have more money in their pocket and businesses had a friendlier environment. But we should be gouging businesses and Canadians so the feds can be in the black? Canola has been jumping around 430 bucks all throughout this financial hoopla, and will hover around there for a while. This is the futures price mind you. Yes lets devalue our exports, cut more jobs and throw our economy further down the toilet while we're at it. I'm thinking pay cuts and not filling so many positions. Your right its time to tighten the belt pay cuts and a hiring freeze, dare I say layoffs. 10% pay cut would help things out immensely. -

Do you have any idea how much it costs to produce oil and go looking for it and to develop new technologies, plus to pay back the investors who are bankrolling these ventures? No profit means no production, those oil companies have to be profitable. -

blueblood replied to BC_chick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
that's what PMPM and chretien did. Would you rather have a depression or go into deficit? Oh well, May canola is still 430 bucks a tonne. 4 billion bucks is chump change, Harper has to go into deficit because those in the cities aren't keen on fiscal conservatism. They like tax and spend politicians, the Liberals fit the bill. Harper would love to slash costs, however there is this little problem called an election he has to face. Harper is a politician, not a CEO. Politicians are not good financial managers as much as you would like to believe them. Should all employees of the gov't and anyone receiving gov't tax dollars as a salary take a 10% paycut? Those on gov't paychecks (Doctors, civil servants, teachers, senators, etc.) crying that Harper is a poor financial manager have no business making such an opinion. -
Umm, that'll happen when manufacturing workers realize they don't deserve to be in the same paygrade as doctors and lawyers and will be willing to accept wages that are appropriate for their skill level of work. If that won't happen, there are some other countries that would be happy to build what we want for a fraction of the cost with the added benefit of having money to buy our other exports, what a novel idea!!!
