What the Governor General Has to Do!
blueblood replied to whowhere's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Speaking of newfies, I wonder what old Danny Boy has to say about this. Are we going to see flags come down, I bet he's not too happy about a Quebec seperatist party in gov't. He may rue the day he ran the ABC campaign. -
People also want to pick their governments when it's time is up. That's not wasteful, that's a pinnacle of democracy. Apparently there is 30 billion floating around for economic stimuli, why not spend 1/3 of 1 billion to take their idea to the people.
-
Of the seats in the HOC, given these shenanigans he has a legitimate shot. And the left's power at all costs and cowardly ways are what's stoking the fire. Canadians are pissed at them.
-
No he wouldn't be brave, but given the cowardly plot by the opposition, he has to play ball to get the budget out. Like I said, the Left is bringing a knife to a gun fight, this will get ugly. CTV.ca only lets me vote once. Nice try. You can go there and cancel my vote if you want to. Not that it will matter. That will depend on the next election campaign. If the tories can sell the lefts cowardice, underhanded tricks, etc. the electorate will decide.
-
Damn rights, have fun next election running against a fully armed tory war room. The Liberals are flat out cowards for not going to the public for an election. Have fun campaigning against that. The list goes on. The centre right tory supporters on here are not worried at all. We look forward to watching this car accident. And they say Harper has a hidden agenda!!! According to ctv.ca's informal poll 73% of Canadians responding think this is nothing more than a cheap power grab. Hidden agenda of the Liberals power at all costs. Pretty brave to take power without going to the electorate. If this is the only way Dion can be PM, that isn't saying much about the integrity of the Liberal, NDP, and Bloc. Watch for attack ads!!!
-
Don't worry, the tory war room is firing on all cylinders now. I can't wait for the attack ads. Harper needs to make a big speech.

The option of Proroguing Parliament
blueblood replied to punked's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Wrong!!! The tories have a huge donation base. All they have to do is say paid for by the conservative party on their ads and they are in the clear. Every Canadian knows that the tories pay for their own ads. Genius pure genius. What taxpayers are going to see is business's being gouged so the looney left can throw money around. Other countries are protecting their business's, the looney left wants to punish ours!! Have fun running a campaign on that -
All the tory war room has to do is sit back and watch this train wreck. I love it, they can't lose!!!

They have that at work all over the country, it's called stress leave and vacation. -
The option of Proroguing Parliament

Harper doesn't have to get a budget through. It would be a feather in his cap if he did. The only reason Harper should prorogue parliament is to buy time for the budget, other than that it is not necessary as the gov't will be defeated anyway. IMO getting a budget through is very very important. -
The opposition parties will already be facing huge consequences from the ROC in the following election. The tory war room is having a field day.
-
It'll be hard to vote him out if he shuts down parliament. If Harper lays down a budget when Obama lays down his economic plan, the opposition has an extremely large mess on their hands.

The option of Proroguing Parliament

His budget comes out in less than two months and parliament is in chaos, that's a perfectly acceptable reason to prorogue parliament. If Harper gets a budget out, the opposition is in major trouble. -
Same with PMPM in 05
-
Get used to it, that will be tory spin. They might as well be, it's their votes that will allow legislation to pass. If you really want to split hairs. The bloc are already in government, they were elected to the house of commons as MP's.

The option of Proroguing Parliament

How will it be the end of his career? He is extremely close in time to laying out a budget. He has every right to prorouge parliament; it's chaos. That's an easier sell to the electorate than this coalition. Harper is in a great situation, he can sit back, lay attack ad upon attack ad, lay out a budget, and go to the polls with all the ammunition in the world. Shut down parliament until the budget. -
This reminds me of the feint military tactic. Harper could possibly shut down parliament, he could get away with it because he is more than justified in doing so. He can roll out the budget, and let the opposition do its worst. All the while rolling out attack ad upon attack ad. There is plenty of ammunition for the tories to use. Harper has also in a sense put the GG in a corner. Does she allow a coalition with separatists? Does she allow an election? The GG is a figurehead appointed by reputation. Would the GG want to go into the history books as someone who would allow the separatists a chance in gov't? Does Harper go to the Crown if he can? Harper is preparing for the next election and has enough ammunition to lay a real hurting on all the opposition parties. Let loose the attack ads!!!
-
And your underestimating the sheer strength of the tory war room. They anhialated Stephane Dion, they made him look like a joke, now Duceppe, and Layton are going to be taken for a ride. The electorate bought that Dion was no good, they'll surely buy into this. The tories have no problems now. Just get the budget out and it's easy street. The left has brought a knife to a gun fight.
-
I'd be scared if my opponent had the funds to wage war like the tories do. Ask Stephane Dion about attack ads. Being painted as undemocratic, uncompromising, sell outs, cowardly, and power hungry won't go over too well with the public. Harper is the face of Tory Brass. Party leaders are a dime a dozen. He has enough ammunition to give the opposition shell shock in the next election. When Harper releases his budget when Obama takes power and lays out his economic plan, the opposition are really going to look bad. Tory Brass is laughing right now.
-
He has to prorogue parliament. He has a legitimate excuse to do so. By moving up the budget by a month, he can pretty much get away with it. I think the budget is critical to his plan. He has to deliver it. Especially with Senator Obama taking office and giving his economic plan. The budget might not get voted on, but he'll deliver the points and ask to go to the electorate on it. He now has all the ammunition he needs for a nasty election campaign that will inevitably be coming whether its in February or when the coalition falls apart. He's better off rolling out the budget. It's another bullet in his preverbial gun. He will keep his head tucked, working on attack ads and general strategy. The tories have sent out an appeal for more funds from their card carriers. Mark my words come January, the tories are going to come out swinging.
-
Have fun trying to take that message to the voting public. I love it, tory brass has the opposition with its hands caught in the cookie jar. All they have to do is shut down parliament until the budget tabling. All the coalition has done is give tory brass plenty of ammunition in the next barrage of attack ads, press conferences, etc. I can hear them chanting cowards now. The question is can the left wing coalition explain to the Canadian voting public the reason for their intentions? All the tories have to do is table the budget and they are on easy street. Let the mudslinging begin!!!
-
Get ready for more attack ads and more brinkmanship. It'll be dicey until January when the budget is tabled. Who knows what the GG will do? She may or may not accept a coalition. Harper is buying time to spin his message. If polls indicate Harper is found to be in the right by the populace, watch him to berate the opposition into an election. Harper is playing with fire and a jerry can of gasoline.

Mysterious websites want Baird, Prentice for leader
blueblood replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
we'll see when it happens, when it will happen I don't know. days, months, years, who knows -
Now that we're settled down, if you think you seen brinkmanship from Harper, it's going to get a lot worse. If Harper shut down Parliament until the budget vote expect massive polling, a barage of attack ads, tv appearances, etc. Harper has ammunition, he apparently has time, and has funds to wage war. I think he has to, he has no confidence in the house, and should begin campaigning immediately. His bullying will get worse. He will try and bully the opposition into an election.
